Very unfriendly staff, took us 40' to check in. The room was average and the bathroom looked like it was still the same like in 1950. We asked to arrange a taxi in 20', when we came down, nothing was arranged so after waiting another 10' we did the trip on foot which caused us to miss our appointment by 20'. Never going back here when in Shanghai.

This hotel was built in the 1930s and at some point was probably the best in the area. Its been renovated over the years. It still has some traces of grandeur but it looks like its going to need some updating soon.

We arrived a couple of hours after midnight to the strong smell of cigarette smoke. The lobby was rather dark but the staff quickly processed our check in. We then lugged all our luggages ourselves to our room. The view from the window is not so good, and hampered by the chair and ottoman beside it. This same chair and ottoman makes the cabinet situated behind it (and the safe inside the cabinet) difficult to access.

For an old hotel, the noise coming from the hallways is quite considerable. Otherwise, sleep quality is good.

In-room wi-fi is free but spotty. And considering that there is no Google here looking for things up on the internet can be a chore.

The bathroom is spacious, but there is no bidet.

Breakfast is on the second floor, with a decent buffet spread. The spread hardly changes from day to day. I asked for 2 omelets with everything on it from the chef and for some reason, while he acknowledged that I asked for omelets, he gave me scrambled eggs. Otherwise, the breakfast staff are very, very friendly and helpful.

The best part about this hotel is its location. There are a lot of shops around it. Nanjing Road and People’s Square are a walking distance. You can also walk to the bus station that takes you to Zhujiajiao Water Town from here. A taxi from here will of course take you anywhere in Shanghai. In a street behind the hotel theres a whole stretch of restaurants to try. And theyre very good.

The hotel is a bit old. But for the price, its well worth looking into.

I recommend this Art Deco hotel. It is really like a museum. The front desk is no exception. Like a deja vu of the old China (in a good way). Nice bar, and Chinese/Japanese breakfast. Very well located close to Nanjing Road and the Bund. Opposite a metro stop, so you can go anywhere.

I was only staying overnight on business but it's the best location I've had for a budget hotel as it's right in the middle of the action. The hotel was clean and functional if a little basic however that's all I needed for my nights stay.

Pro's:
There were more things I LOVED than what I found frustrating.
1.) Its about 45 minutes from Pu Dong airport via taxi/private car (we got a private car from airport that cost 700RMB = $102 USD)
2.) The hotel is right across the street from People's Square Station
3.) The breakfast buffet was good, it had enough to fill your belly to get through a long day on 1 big meal (88 RMB = $13 USD)
4.) When you exit the hotel and walk to the left, there is a Starbucks, Wax Museum, and Shopping Mall with a food court on the Basement level (most of their malls have this so be sure to stop in!)
5.) When you walk out of hotel and exit left, it takes you straight on to Nanjing Road and The Bund at the end of the road! This was the highlight of our stay.
6.) When you see the Bund, be sure to check out the tunnel and some of the quirky amusement they have inside(3D trick museum, etc)
7.) We stayed in room 511 and the view wasn't great but it was good enough.
8.) Shanghai Disney was about 45 minutes away by taxi and cost around 145 RMB ($21). If you can plan ahead, take a train, its cheaper and if you get motion sickness, you wont feel sick from the drive there!!!
9.) The concierge, housekeeping, and doorman were extremely sweet, I would definitely stay here again!

Con's:
Making the reservation was the only part of my booking/stay that was extremely frustrating... When I originally made our reservation we booked with a "pay at the hotel option" but decided to change it so that we could have the reservation charged in full prior to our arrival. We didn't want to have any problems with our credit cards being we were from another country. I sent the hotel many emails asking to please charge the card and after very rough communication and being told many times my card is declined, we found that they don't accept debit cards. We finally figured that out 2 days before our arrival and had to have our employer put her card on file with booking.com and we gave the hotel card info as well. Again, room was never charged in full so we ended up having issues upon our arrival because the credit card was not under our names...
Lastly, the ac was constantly warm luckily it was around 50 degrees outside so we just opened the windows and the room was nice and cool. I found this funny because the bath water was constantly room temperature and took forever to drain so I was constantly trying to shower quickly not giving the water time to heat up!
