Difficult to grade this one did a tour that was downloaded and followed the map provided. This was informative and very descriptive of the whole area, the experience was well worth it but a visit would need to be accompanied with an explanation of the surroundings.

Thank Paul J

Visited here with our tour guide Mason.

He was very knowledgeable about the Jewish people in Shanghai & China.

We visited the Jewish history museum & it was very insightful.

This "Restricted Sector for Stateless Refugees" was an area of approximately one square mile in the Hongkew district of Shanghai. When about 23,000 of the city's Jewish refugees were restricted or relocated to the area from 1941 to1945, it became one of the poorest and most crowded areas of the city, as the local (very poor) Chinese did not leave (and were not relocated). Local Jewish families and American Jewish charities aided them with shelter, food, and clothing. There is a nice little park commemorating the former Jewish quarter in the middle of the area now.

I have visited this place many times now, usually guiding visitors who knew little or nothing about the Jewish part of Shanghai history. The former synagogue that is the museum has been renovated , with many interesting aspects added. The little park that has the memorial has been restyled. And what is best is the reconstructed "Weisses Rössl", the historical Little Vienna coffeehouse. Well worth a visit, even if you have already been to this area

This tour is a must if visiting Shanghai! Our guide was very thorough in his knowledge and history of the Jews in Shanghai. We started at the Peace hotel: historical landmark on its own, walked to the Bund and had a great day if learning the history of Shanghai and the Jewish ghetto! Very enjoyable!
