We had an amazing week in Costa Rica, and stayed at this hotel on the way back to the airport.

First, we tried to go for happy hour cocktails. After we ordered our pricey cocktails, we found out that there are special cocktails which are the only ones included in the happy hour discount - this was not indicated on the poster or the menu, or communicated by our bartender. A minor gripe, but an annoying start.

The service was incredibly slow. The bar and restaurant were almost empty, and it took over 30 minutes to order and get a drink, and then when we tried to settle up and go over to the restaurant, at least another 30 for the bartender to figure out how to print the bill. They wouldn't let us just add the drinks to the restaurant bill, or charge it to our room.

The food and drinks were pretty good but again it took forever to get someone to take our order in the restaurant, and forever to get the bill at the end. We were exhausted from a long day of travel and had an early flight, so this was also annoying.

To cap it all off, the shower completely flooded the whole bathroom, and we had to call down for more towels because we had to use all of ours + 2 more to contain the water in a makeshift retaining wall at the door of the shower 🤦

Maybe it's not the worst hotel in the world, but for an airport hotel, I'd expect a little more time consciousness. And compared to the thoughtful and professional accommodations and service we recieved EVERYWHERE else in Costa Rica, this was a disappointing way to end our trip :(

Room tip: Don't leave anything on the floor of the bathroom if you're going to shower - it floods the entire floor

Pros: Good location close to airport with shuttle. Hotel rooms are new and comfortable, pool area was nice, and restaurant food was good too. Right next to city mall, we went a couple times to hang out there.

Cons: Still pretty new, so they are working out a lot of kinks. As examples, the Digital key wouldn't work. They didn't have the right rooms for us on the first night because they were overbooked. They were understaffed at the reception. Hopefully they work out all these little details soon.

I have stayed here twice. Once not long after the hotel opened in January 2024 and a second time in March 2024. Each time for one night prior to my departing flight at San Jose airport. As of early 2024 this is a very new hotel that is clean and comfortable. The pool area, which has an adjacent bar, seemed nice but I didn’t spend any time there. The best thing about the hotel is that it is very close to San Jose airport and also connected to the City Mall in Alajuela. You can take an elevator that’s just outside the hotel to get into the mall which has many shops and a giant food court. Traffic in San Jose can be awful so being so close that you can see the airport from your room is very convenient but it can get noisy starting early in the morning as planes land and take off.

There’s a hotel shuttle that runs every 30 minutes (or so) and takes 5-10 minutes to get to the airport, depending on traffic. There’s quite a bit of construction on the roads near the hotel so sometimes it may take longer to get the shuttle. They have a breakfast buffet that’s pretty much in line with other Hilton Garden Inns but with some Costa Rican specialties like gallo pinto and fried plantains. I find the price to be a little on the expensive side for Costa Rica but it’s highly convenient so I’m willing to bear the cost for one night at a time. I believe that there is a casino planned to be added soon so that might change the overall vibe of the hotel. Either way, I have been happy with my two very short stays here.

We booked this hotel to start and to finish our Costa Rica family trip. We needed a hotel that is close to the airport, offers a frequent airport shuttle and has good connections to San Jose city center. Hilton Garden Inn checked all the boxes.
PROS:
1. Location (airport, mall, public transport)
2. Room (the spacious one bedroom suite was perfect for our family, it even had a good view, the standard room with two beds was nice as well)
3. Staff (friendly, happy to help)
4. Pool (heated, was never crowded... It can get a bit windy...)
CONS:
1. Breakfast (could be improved. It's not bad, but the frequency of replacing the items (bread!) varies greatly with occupancy and the selection is rather repetitive. Also, if the breakfast opens at 6 AM and there is no coffee until 6:20, this is not the best way to get caffeinated before your flight. Small things, that can easily be fixed.)
2. Plumbing (it's true, the shower can flood your bathroom - it is a design flaw that would take a lot of effort to fix... BUT you can adjust the angle of the showerhead and the problem is solved)

All in all, it is a nice hotel in a good location that has some room for improvement and I believe they can do it - the hotel is still new. I recommend the hotel and would stay there again.
