A Little Gem

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 weeks ago
This hotel is a little gem and I will definitely stay there again if/when I get back to Costa Rica. The two buildings have been beautifully restored, and the result is beautiful boutique like hotel with amazing gardens and trails. I would never have expected to stay so close to the airport and yet put on my hiking boots in the morning for one final look for birds. And there were plenty, I even saw a toucan. The food was pretty good too, and most welcome after coming in from a more basic lodge. My bedroom was lovely and very comfortable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is not on the main road. It’s noisy.

Villa Ignacio is a really nice hotel, split over 2 nicely decorated buildings with gardens between. Bar is nice (mixes a good mojito) and the restaurant on an evening was really good. Breakfast service was a little slow though.

Our room was big with a nice bathroom, comfy bed and good shower.

Very handy for airport, about 25 minutes in a taxi (though there I no airport noise).

4 not 5 stars as gardens need some work, have become a little scruffy, and breakfast service was slow. However still very good spot to relax before or after flight.

This is a lovely hotel about 30 minutes drive from the International Airport of San Jose. There is the main area with restaurant, reception, pool, terrasse and the original rooms as well as another larger building a short drive or hike up the hill with more rooms.
We stayed at the Villa at the beginning and the end of our tour in rooms 8 and 11 which are identical except that nr 11 is on the first floor above nr 8. There was a comfortable double bed with a very good mattress and the room was decorated very nicely. The bathroom is small but perfectly adequate. The room itself is spaceous and well appointed with a second washbasin, an A/C, ceiling fan and a safe.
The gardens are magical and there are trails to explore. The view from the top of the property is beautiful and benches throughout the garden invite guests to sit and watch the butterflies, humming birds monkeys and the lovely vegetation.
The pool is beautiful but gets busy at times because this place is popular with families. Dogs are welcome too (though not allowed in the pool...). There is a good pool table and books and games in the large entertainment area.
The food was excellent and the menu quite varied with a good wine list and lovely cocktails.
The staff are charming and very happy to arrange taxi rides or tours.
We had our rental car delivered to and picked up from the hotel which worked very well.
We can definitely recommend the Villa San Ignacio !

Perfect for a first night hotel on arrival in Costa Rica at such a reasonable price. Therefore bear that in mind as for the money it is a very good hotel. Lovely pool and more importantly clean comfortable rooms (ours looked recently renovated). The staff are great and food and drinks reasonable. We had an early start and breakfast was available early eg 7am and the staff very helpful in organising cabs etc. The journey from the airport was in the dark and you go through a local area with what looks like no sign of a hotel but it’s there and is behind a private gated entrance. We’d definitely stay again based on value, comfort and location.

This gated hotel was lovely to stay at. The room was fair sized and clean, though the bathroom door was a bit strange (think sliding barn-door). There was a safe available in our room, though we didn't feel unsafe at all. The onsite restaurant had delicious options and excellent service. Best of all, it was very reasonably priced! The hotel grounds and pool appeared well kept and there was a lounge area with a billard table, chess, and other entertainment.

I had booked our last night here before returning home to the UK. We were due to arrive about 5pm, and not leave until 24 hours later as we had a late flight, hence not wanting a hotel right next to the airport. I had already figured out a few options for things we could do if we wanted to be busy on our travel day, however the hotel did say we could stay and use the pool if we checked out by noon.

I arranged for an airport pick up with the hotel at $25 (and they were very responsive to my queries) and right enough, when we arrived from Puerto Jimenez there was a lady with my name on the board. She took us to a very smart (and in excellent condition)airport air conditioned minivan and drove us to the hotel. She told us the hotel would liaise with her for the travel back the next day.

Our room was…. Well I guess it was a correct reflection in the pictures but it was awfully dark because it was on the lower floor, and first impressions were not helped by a very nosey guest having a good peer into our room as we unpacked so the curtains were promptly closed, reducing any little light there was coming in. Talk about rude! But not the hotel’s fault. Anyway, it was rustic but the price was very reasonable and we had been spoilt by our previous locations. That said, it was clean and spacious and the bed was comfy enough. The face cloth and bath towels were soft and thick. The hand towels…not sure why the hotel let the side down with them but they were thin and frayed and just generally best used as dusters. Very odd. That said, the wonderful shower pressure made me forgive them as it was great. Not so great was the shower rail about to come off from the wall (but it didn’t!), nor the noise from the motorbikes in the street. Never heard any noise of aircraft flying overhead.

Restaurant staff were friendly and overall we were happy enough but disappointed when the bill came as the 3 glasses of wine which should have been $7 a glass were charged at $10. Overall, an overcharge of $9 which we just couldn’t be bothered to challenge to leave a sour taste in our mouths after a wonderful 3 week trip. But annoying nonetheless. If it was because the wine we chose was more expensive, then fine but the staff member should have explained that to us at the time of ordering, and indeed there was no option for a glass of wine other than at $7. Anyway, not a big deal except that he could have ordered a bottle for less!

Breakfast was….not great. Enough said.

But we stayed by the pool all day (hubby decided he couldn’t be bothered to go gallivanting) and it was nice and peaceful and enjoyable. We were able to use a shower room to wash before our flight home so that was handy and they stored our bags away for us after we checked out at noon.

Lunch was..our best meal. Huge portions and tasty, lucky for my husband as he got to eat what I couldn’t manage, and even luckier as we didn’t get our dinner on the flight until past midnight due to a flight delay!

We ordered a taxi through the hotel and this was not good. When I saw the cab, the rear had clearly been hit by another car as the boot was pretty bashed in and only held closed by a cable holding it down. There was no air con, but most worryingly there were 3 warning lights on (flat tyre, check engine and ABS- most familiar to me on my own car😂). So while we had to laugh about it and keep our fingers crossed the car would get us there in one piece, it was disappointing and I feel for $20, something wasn’t quite right. So, that left a bit of a bad feeling about the place. The driver was a careful driver though.

Overall though, the positives probably outweighed the negatives and for what we paid, it was totally fine. I would, however, consider elsewhere next time.
