We arrived, exhausted, after a 20 hour journey, but a short ride from San Jose airport. We had been recommended by friends to go to this converted coffee plantation, but just wanted to collapse into bed. Instead we almost collapsed in astonishment at the brilliant beauty of the place. In the light of the next day this impresion was more than confirmed. It is a collection of villas, landscaped to feel that each is isolated and on an escarpment with fabulous views over the Central Valley. They are set in a magnificent tropical botanical garden, with paths leading to isolated swimming pools and jacuzzis, an art gallery, an orchid house, a spa complex etc. and beyond those to jungle trails leading to a set of waterfalls. (Some of these trails are very tough!)
Everywhere there is vivid colour, because the whole enterprise is dream of an American accuracy and his brilliant artist wife. Round a corner you will see a coloured stone monolith or a Mayan-like statue. But the real colour is in the villas and the central restaurant/lounge area.
Here there are mosaics, stained glass windows, brilliant wall hangings and rugs, table tops like Jackson Pollock paintings, and everything the original creation of the owners. Our villa was huge, all open plan with ingenious layout; large bedroom area leading on one side to a big dressing room and a shower room looking out into a secluded patio accessible from the dressing room.
Tho other side of the bedroom leads to a big sitting room, and then a kitchen / breakfast room area and also a picture window onto a big patio and balcony overlooking the valley. The ceiling was all curves in wood, and everything was in vibrant colours. We came back for one day at the end of our trip and the villa we were given then had a totally different layout but was even more amazing! The central restaurant is also set overlooking the valley, mostly on a balcony and was surprisingly small, as was the rest of the central area lounge/TV room/shop/free WiFi/ reception, but then we remembered that there are fewer than 30 villas. The food was good but not memorable, except for the lavish amount of fresh tropical fruit at breakfast. (There is also fruit and excellent coffee in the villa kitchens.)The staff are all delightfully friendly. Two caveats: this is not a grand hotel with flunkeys, and not lavishly luxurious. Don't think Savoy, rather Tate Modern. Also the place isolated up on high and you need transport to get to a supermarket or other restaurant. We are quite elderly and we reckon that Xandari would be even more magical for a honeymoon!

Room Tip: There are some semi-detached villas which we didn't look at. I am sure that they are very nice but go for the higher rated ones if you can afford it. All have great views and are near to one of the secluded swimming pools.

We stayed two nights here at the end of our trip. We loved our villa (#9) with a gorgeous view of San Jose. The grounds, hiking trails, waterfalls, and heated pools are amazing. The meals in the restaurant were excellent. The staff was so nice to us. They even prepared a to-go breakfast to take to the airport (6:00 AM flight). We would happily stay at the Xandari again.

We stayed here two nights at the end of our trip and it really is just 15 minutes from the airport. The property is nicely kept and the hiking trails are an added bonus as the hotel is quite secluded. The Ultra Plus villa we stayed in had a nice view and was very spacious. Unfortunaltey we heard traffic noises and dogs barking from the villa. Compared to other places we stayed this was very expensive and one night would have been enough for us. The food in the restaurant was very good as was customer service.

We stayed here for 2 nights at the start of our holiday in Costa Rica. The location was perfect (only 20 minutes from the airport) but it couldn't have felt further from the city. The villas are huge, extremely comfortable with astonishing views. The hotel is set in hundreds of acres of beautiful gardens and trails that are great fun to explore. The property also has several pools to choose from. The food was simple but delicious. All fresh including many Costa Rican specialities. You definitely will not want to leave!

Stayed here for 2 nights before our flight back to the States last week. Gorgeous property and beautiful spa with great dining and nice staff. Rooms are like villas with amazing views and a choice of pools nearby. Many acres of naturally-landscaped hiking trails. You won't want to leave once you arrive, which is good because it's very secluded. Easy 5-10 minutes to airport the day you leave. Not best choice for any one with walking difficulties as you do have to walk up and down hills quite a bit to get to lobby/restaurant (the only place there is wifi, by the way).
