“Amazing Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

We had a wonderful experience volunteering for a half day through Desafio company. We got to learn about the many animals that live there and then feed them. The animals are very well taken care of and happy. It was one of our favorite excursions and cannot be missed when in the La Fortuna area. It really puts perspective on the black market of animals and how each of us can make a difference. I cannot wait to return...hopefully we can stay longer this time.

“Amazing work, wonderful people, incredible animals”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

If you don't have time to do a full-day tour to Cano Negro, or the Cloud Forest, or you simply just want to support an incredible local organization, check out Projecto Asis. 30 minutes by taxi ($30 each way) outside La Fortuna, the project is run by a father-son team who take in and, when possible, rehabilitate and release exotic animals (parrots, sloths, kinkachus, monkeys, etc.) that are rescued from the black market, poachers, and people who no longer want them as pets. Some are injured and cannot survive in the wild - they will live their life being cared for here.

This is not a zoo - it's a facility dedicated to educating the public about the destructive nature of the exotic animals black market, as well as providing a chance to learn more about the animals native to Costa Rica. You can pay a little more and have the chance to help prepare the animals food and feed them, and wash out the cages with the staff. Children will go NUTS for this place - but we left feeling incredibly grateful that we found them, and we both made additional donations, bought teeshirts, and plan to spread the word about their good works. They receive no government funds by choice, to ensure they never have to close their doors, and they turn no animals away.

You will not regret this experience!

“An Unforgettable Experience in Costa Rica”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 February 2012

My friends and I had the best time at Proyecto Asis thanks to Adriana. She gave us a tour and introduced us to all the animals and told us a little bit about how they came to live at the rescue and if they could ever be released back into the wild. However, making food and feeding the raccoons, birds, monkeys, and kinkajoo was by far the best part of our visit. I hope to return to Proyecto Asis to volunteer fand take Spanish classes in the future.

“Worth your time.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 February 2012

We visited Proyecto Asis today and had a wonderful few hours learning about and interacting with the animals rehabbing at the compound. We were guided by Adriana, who had to run get her own camera to take a picture of the Coatimundi which was being collected for release today. Her compassion for the animals was evident and genuine.

In our two weeks in Costa Rica, this was easily both my and my wife's favorite activity. I couldn't recommend it more.

“Great experience - highly recommended!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2012

We booked this activity through Desafio - which I would commend only because others that went there had to take a long taxi ride that ended up costing a lot.... we loved Proyecto Asis - the animals and the guides were great. I loved seeing and holding the animals....then we had a great lunch/snack .... we got to clean out Perla's cage and then cut of fruit and make bird seed balls to feed the animals. It was so much fun - I think everyone in our group enjoyed it - I would most definitely recommend this to anyone coming to La Fortuna - this was probably our favorite activity, besides white water rafting, that we did in the area.
