“Lovely stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2012

We arrived after a harrowing drive around Lake Arenal; the check-in was very smooth and we were just in time for Happy Hour around a beautiful pool! Our room was spacious with a small patio and very nice bath area. The grounds there are splendid, and best of all was the view of the volcano from our patio. Although there was no lava or eruption, it was still spectacular. We ate at the restaurant that evening and had a delicious buffet with all we could ask for. The staff was very helpful in booking trips and they were super-friendly. It was all we hoped for and more!

We arrived in San Jose in the afternoon and had ordered private transportation to pick us up from the airport. We were met by a very friendly man who drove us in a nice, clean SUV to the hotel. We found out later he was the owner of the hotel. We saw him a few times throughout our stay and when we left, he gave us both hugs--a very sweet, friendly guy! We loved our stay here. The breakfast buffet was good, the pools nice, the rooms clean--we had a beautiful view of the volcano right from our room. It was a very laid back place with a great atmosphere. We would definetly recommend this place!

My sister and I arrived late and tired. The young woman was patient, friendly and professional. The young man who took us to our cabin/room in a golf cart, was polite, efficient and helpful. The room had the best security system - insert your card key and it turned on the lights. We opened up the drapes and there was the magnificent volcano before us, framed by green grass and a profusion of flowering bushes and trees. A door opened onto a small fairly private landing outfitted with chairs - we were in heaven. My sister did her yoga routine out on the grass, with the volcano as a backdrop. The room was comfortable, clean, roomy. A buffet breakfast was included, and it was quite elaborate. We also purchased the buffet supper. Really good food and good variety. My sister is a vegetarian and I'm allergic to all milk products and we were both very pleased. There was a pool and hot tub that we didn't get a chance to use, partly because a tour of high school kids were there at the same time and monopolized both. There is a short hike around the property which was a nice walk. We hated leaving and wished our tour had allowed for more time there. I would absolutely recommend staying here.r

Room Tip: Our room was great - not sure if there are any bad rooms here - but I loved looking out the window a...

We just checked in a while ago and were happy with the assistance we received to get to our room and appreciated the help we got to ensure everything was working in the room before the person left. We ate at the restaurant onsite - good dinner buffet. Food is tasty and had some decent vegetarian items.

Just a little negative item, not sure if it is a TripAdvisor or Hotel issue, but the 'Free Dinner' link on TripAdvisor only works if you book directly with the hotel - according to Hotel staff and the manager they called. A little disappointed because Trip Advisor links only to third parties to book a room (i.e. Expedia.com), not to the hotel. The coupon only says to book a 'superior room' and then bring the coupon to check in, which we did via Orbitz, but apparently that's a 'gotcha'...so, if you're debating between this place and another place and are thinking about the 'free dinner' - disregard that incentive unless you book appropriately...which they may still disregard because the hotel staff was unaware of the coupon in general, even after we showed it to them.

Twenty years ago, before there were any tourist attractions at the foot of Arenal Volcano, three friends and I camped out there. It was a beautiful starry night and the volcano was active. At around 10:00 a.m. we very foolishly climbed up what we thought was a road to an old quarry that used to be at the base of the volcano. Unfortunately, we became infatuated with the molten rocks and lava we could see flowing down the far side of the volcano and climbed way too high. Well guess what, the volcano had a massive eruption and we were clinging like fools to a huge rock on the side of the volcano. Just before we got covered in hot ash, we watched molten boulders pass us on the other side of a gully running down the volcano. We raced down when the wind blew the ash away and watched it erupt again when we had reached the bottom. We never slept a wink that night and watched in awe as the volcano kept shooting out fireworks just for us. There was a full moon that night and it was awesome to still be alive and see this amazing sight. Around 6:00 am as the sun came up, howler monkeys started calling each other across lake Arenal. This experience impacted my life.
Now you know that when I decided to come back twenty years later with my husband (who did not experience this as he was sick 30 km away at a lodge) that I wanted to revisit this special place and not be let down. I had heard how built up everything was and I was really afraid. Well the Volcano Lodge and Gardens were just the place for us to stay. Yes, as advertised we had a great view of the volcano from our room (even though most of it is covered in cloud all the time we did get some quick sneak views of the peak.) The open air dining area is perfect as it also has a great view of the volcano and we were able to jump up from our meals and take a quick snapshot whenever the clouds blew away. The small pool was clean and right beside the dining area and also a walk up bar. The hot tub was huge and secluded from the pool area and the waiters had no problem delivering any drink you wanted. Half price happy hour every day as well. There were five of us on this trip. Another couple and our thirty year old son. We are all active and it worked out well as there is great zip lining close by, mountain bike rentals in La Fortuna. Horseback riding right from the hotel and many other activities. We went white water rafting for an entire day and we were picked up promptly from the hotel for all activities. The hotel is set in an area where a vast number of flowering shrubs and trees have been planted. The gardens are not formal but just everywhere with walkways. The hummingbirds are everywhere as well as many birds and butterflies. The area around the volcano has not been cut and you feel as though you are still in a fairly wild area. There are hiking trails at the base of the volcano at the lake and also to a waterfall. My son went there and said it was really worth hiking to. You can take a taxi to La Fortuna from the hotel for around $10.00 each way which can add up if you go back and forth a lot. Also we took a taxi to the volcano park and it was a little expensive as our driver dropped us off and came back for us at a set time. However, it was too far to walk from the hotel. The rooms at the hotel were spacious although I found them a bit drab as the rooms were a dark wood and the bedspreads and curtains seemed dark as well. It was a bit like a cabin but very clean with a good TV (which we never watched). We had three adults in our room and there was plenty of room and the rates were very good for adding the third person. The food at the restaurant was very good with adequate choice and presented in an almost gourmet style. The waiters were efficient even though they had a little problem with English but very courteous. The breakfast included was really good. Set in an open air style with volcano view, lovely flowers surrounding it and hummingbirds flitting around, what could be better. Really good selection of fruits, cereals and hot food as well as fresh buns and pastry.
The volcano Lodge turned out to be the perfect place for me to stay and enjoy my visit with my old friend Arenal Volcano. My husband, son and friend who came with us all really liked the ambiance of this hotel and we are really happy to have stayed there.

We picked this hotel having access to a car.

Pros
Massive site, beautiful gardens with well spaced private rooms. Very peaceful place to stay.
Breakfasts were fantastic with lots of choice. Nice pool with good views of the volcano (if only the pesky clouds would leave it alone...!)
Nice happy hour cocktails.
Safe parking with guard.
Generally very high standard, good food (but pricey compared with local eats).

Cons
If you don't have own transport, you'll probably need taxi's to get anywhere.
If you take their recommended excursions they're more expensive than local vendors due to transport.

Eating out options are many in La Fortuna and around. We had great reasonably priced food at la Brasitas. We used Eco-termales spa/thermal pools which was a quieter option than Baldi!

Definitely worth a visit to the La Fortuna falls - but as one of the guide books says, getting out of the 400+ steps is like an afternoon at the gym!
