We were a Princess cruise and elected to take an excursion to Sarchi to see the painted ox carts. we drove by the largest oxcart in the world. Wheels are about 10 feet tall and every inch on the whole cart is painted with beautiful designs. We went to shop where they paint the carts and other items. They showed us how they run all their machinery (lathes, saws, etc) using a water wheel. We were able to see a couple of Artists at work. all their work is free hand painted, no stencils. Our only complaint was that we didn't have enough time in the gift shop. The trip was well worth the expense of the excursion.
This is a decades old traditional souvenir shop run by a cooperative. This means that the proceeds are distributed among the members which means you are helping the locals in a more equally way than shopping at a privately owned business.
You can find most of the souvenirs you can imagine, ranging from wine bottle stands to refrigerator magnets, and locally produced coffee (Naranjo’s) that by the way has earned lots of prizes on coffee expos and conventions internationally speaking. If you are purchasing a large amount, they will be happy to apply some discount.
Visit one the most unique Church temples in Costa Rica, located near here and pay this place a visit!
You won’t regret it!
Interesting spot to observe painters working on CR wood crafts including the oxcarts. The artists specialize in different steps which was fun to watch. The store has thousands of different handcrafted items as well as any kind of CR item such as coffee, candies, booze, T-shirt’s, Christmas ornaments, furniture, etc.
