We had such a great time on our early morning Palo Verde boat tour. Our guide was Javier and he was so knowledgeable and genuine it makes me smile just thinking about him. He was just as excited as we were to see Costa Rican birds. He took the time to explain subtle differences between birds, and it was appreciated. Olivier also was very helpful and patient with us trying to set up another trip. Sadly we had to decline as where we were staying was too far for us to be in a vehicle. Next time we go to Costa Rica, and there will be a next time, we will stay in the Cloud Forest area, and definately contact Olivier again. If you are into birds, please contact Olivier, you will not be disappointed!!
Amazing trip today with this tour company - our guide, Javier, was incredible. Knew every single bird, mammal, reptile - and most of the people too! Took us to the best rainforest experience imaginable, hummingbirds everywhere, enormous trees dripping with orchids, endangered mammals sauntering by... Monteverde's cloud forest is just indescribable. Great lunch too (TreeHouse Restaurant)...
We spent seventeen days Birding in Costa Rica, travelled over 2000km and saw 456 species and stayed in six different lodges before retiring to Secrets hotel in Papagayo.
The whole tour was put together by Olivier Esquivel our guide who was totally brilliant in all aspects. He met us at the airport, provided the transport and driver who was also excellent. Ollie simply did everything possible during all waking hours to make sure we had the experience of a lifetime, and ensured we saw all the key species we wanted to see.
Ollie also had an extensive and insatiable knowledge of Costa Rica which he shared and was always excellent company.
The tour was outstanding value and undercut the cost of any similar Costa Rica tour you could organise from home. Private tours for small parties are Natural Discovery's forte.
I would unreservedly recommend Natural Discovery to anyone thinking of birding in Costa Rica whether it is for one day or for the whole of Costa Rica
We used Ollie as our private tour guide for 4 different day tours for birding purposes. Our son met us in Costa Rica for this trip. He is an avid birder and he got on quite well with Ollie as their knowledge of birds was well matched. We went to Palo Verde, Monte Verde, Carrera National Park, and Arenal. I highly recommend using a private tour guide if you can--an extremely amazing experience. If you want an amazing Costa Rican experience you must use Ollie!
Another great day guided by Olivier and driven by Jose. We saw over 80 species of birds, including 17 types of hummingbird!
Olivier is a fantastic guide, using his local knowledge and skills to find your target birds and also some we weren't expecting. Highlights included both Toucan species, close up views of hummingbirds (including Green Hermit and Purple-crowned Fairy). Close up views of Aracaris and red-legged honeycreeper were also special memories. I've attached some pictures off back of camera, but can't wait to download the proper images!
Anyone in Guanacaste area wanting guided birding days or tours should contact Olivier. We were very well looked after (including our 20 year old son) and the birds we saw were beyond our expectations.
We had a wonderful time with Olivier and Alan during our few days in the Liberia area.
We went on a full-day trip to Palo Verde with Oli. The river trip and the roadside birding yielded 30 new bird species for us, including our first euphonia, 3 different kingfishers, the boat billed heron, 4 different Orioles, a tri-colored munia, and a rosetted spoonbill. And, thanks to Oli, we've now found two new trogons on our own because we know their flight pattern and even found a new euphonia! The only downside of this trip was my mistake - and a disappointing one at that - the new camera battery did not work.
We went on a 2nd all-day trip, this time with Alan, to Santa Rosa and Rincon. Day 2 yielded 35 new species for us, including antshrikes, tons of tanagers and warblers, 2 different honeycreepers, a bananaquit, parrots, Hawks, the montezuma oropendola, a saltador, a masked tityra, 6 keel billed toucans, and a toady motmot!! We also came across a most-accommodating four legged Tyara just waiting in our path.
Alan, the laughing falcon we listened to on our way to Santa Rosa but couldn't find was just laughing away in a tree during our walk in Samara the other day, we watched him for about 20 minutes. Thanks for pointing out some great bird sounds!
We highly recommend both Oli and Alan as reliable, knowledgeable, and most engaging bird guides!
