We stayed in Villa Sol for 4 nights. We had a nice time, beautiful location, great view, lots of iggies running around. Room was clean and everything functioned. When we got there they put us in a room with 2 beds. Well that was not right, it took 2 hours to find a room with one bed. The only thing about the room I did not like was the refridgerator had no water or beer in it. If you wanted bottle water or canned beer you had to buy it at the mini mart. The buffet restaurant was very boring, although the food was healthy, for the most part. The beach was the dark brown varety. They had a guy on the beach with towels and non alcoholic drinks for the guests, which was nice. The bar was right by the hotel and the pool with the view, the pool had noisy kids in it almost the entire time we were there. The staff noticed my trip advisor tag on my bag, and wanted to know if I was going to write a review. We went in to Cocoa Beach, the nearby town to see what it was like. They have shuttle into town for $5 a person each way.Cocoa Beach is very touristy. Lots of bars and restaurants, and places to buy stuff to bring back. The beach is not very clean and neither is the town. TIP: bring a copy of yur PASSPORT, we were stopped by immigration and did not have a copy with us. They said we could be arrested without one. We did not do any tours this time, just wanted to relax and unwind. The wine at the rssot was a highlight of our stay, the food was not.I don`t think I`d go back to this ressort unless we were going to be gone on tours alot. We like to try a different place whenever we go somewhere

Room tip: We stayed in the hotel part, the higher up the better.

Beautiful grounds and room. Mediocre service, everyone seemed confused and baffled even by simple requests to do things such as make reservations at the "fine-dining" restaurant or borrow snorkel equipment which their own site lists as part of the all-inclusive experience: http://www.villassol.com/experience/all-inclusive
In the end we were never able to borrow snorkel equipment, apparently that is only available for one of their guided activities. Several requests were made at "animacion", but sadly the nice gals there did not speak English and could not find someone to communicate with us enough to answer our questions on this or on the 'night tour' to Coco. The all-inclusive food was buffet style, low-quality and very repetitive, with most of the desserts being entirely tasteless. The snacks offered at the pool were exactly the same 3 options everyday we were there with runny beans and runny cheese sauce, hot dogs and burgers. Sadly our the one-time meal at the 'nice' restaurant turned out to be a dressed up version of the all-inclusive food with a confusing menu and better service, but exact same desserts. The coffee was terrible and seemed blasphemous in a country that takes such pride in the local quality. The lobby computer was not working, the britt shop is terribly expensive and commercialized. Our personal concierge was difficult to locate for most of out stay except to try to sell us expensive tours when we first arrived. One day he had gone home at 3 PM, another we were told he was in the Spa getting a massage. Gilbert ( another concierge) was more helpful and friendly but still could not find a way to lend out snorkel equipment. I should have chosen not to sign up for the time share presentation in order to get a free snorkel tour. The tour was only available one day while we were there, and then the hotel gave us a presentation appointment that fit their schedule but fell right in the middle of one of our vacation days. Then when we arrived at the scheduled time (1130) no one could start our presentation for 30 more minutes and they insisted that we still dedicate 90 minutes to listen to their spiel. We were still almost convinced to buy one of the vacation packages, but glad we did not now that I have researched it online.
The beach is beautiful and amazing, Coco beach has a fun nearby night-life. The location is very convenient to Liberia airport but still seems so remote. The all-inclusive drinks were awesome, most service staff were friendly and we met several nice people during or time at the wetbar. This resort could really improve its rating by making a little more effort with food and ease of service.

I was so excited to stay in Costa Rica, but was pretty disappointed by Villas Sol. It is located in a convenient spot and was about 20-25 minutes away from the Liberia Airport and about 15-20 minutes away from Playa del Coco. The grounds are beautiful, but I was disappointed by the resort as a whole. The resort only had 2 restaurants, one buffet style and one fancier restaurant (which was delicious!) where you can order from a menu; however, we were there for five days and were only allowed to eat in the fancier restaurant once. You could eat there more than once, but you'd have to pay if you went more than your one complimentary time. If the buffet style restaurant was a restaurant in my home town, I'd never go back. I was consistently disappointed by the lack food/beverage selection. Most of the food that was supposed to be hot or cold was room temperature. On one occasion, it took over an hour for milk to be served for the continental breakfast and when it was finally served, the milk was warm. I was also disappointed by the alcohol selection at the resort. The point of my vacation was not to get drunk, but he alcohol was all cheap liquor and you could not order a majority of mixed drinks because the bar was not properly stocked to accomodate such orders. The staff was friendly, but seemed disorganized and all over the place. The pool was nice, but constantly had at least five to ten kids yelling and splashing, which was not the relaxing atmosphere my boyfriend and I were hoping for. The weekends are even more packed with familys that have kids running around. While I understand kids are energetic, I was hoping for a quiet atmosphere of mostly adults. Our villa was a 2 bedroom/1 bathroom villa that was in desperate need of remodeling. The beds were terrible and every morning we awoke with back pain. The kitchen had an ant problem that was never remedied. However, the views from our deck were breathtaking and seeing the ocean from the deck was relaxing. If you are at all impaired or handicapped, this is not the resort for you. There are a lot of steep hills and stairs. The resort provided a shuttle around the grounds, but it ran every 15 minutes and did not drop off patrons to their personal villas/rooms. So, if you are impaired or handicapped, it could be annoying. The activities provided by the staff were great. I highly recommend the kayaking that is provided every morning at 9am. We kayaked to a private beach, which was amazing. The beach was beautiful, but again, had lots of kids running around. However, I was able to find a quiet spot away from most of the kids playing in order to relax. All in all, I would go back to Costa Rica, but not to the Villas Sol resort.

Pros:
Excellent pools.
Endless drinks and quite good food.(All inclusive)
Great, polite staff all around.
Clean rooms with large porch.
Good value with respect to the all inclusive food and drinks. ($85 per person)
Kids would have a great time here. Pools, tennis, basketball, soccer/futbal, snorkling trips, fishing, pool vollyball, bingo, dance lessons, on and on...........
Shuttles to everywhere in the area, some with a cost.
Cons:
Very and I mean VERY loud on the weekends.
Rather 'Babylon' style property with respect to the Costa Rica lifestyle. Gated.
No smoking anywhere on the property, except the parking lot.( If you are a smoker)
Lots of very drunk gringos stay there, as if the only reason they came to CR is to get drunk.

Room tip: Stay away from the pool and bar area, top floor if possible.

My husband and I stayed at this all-inclusive hotel for the last week in November. We found that the hotel is located on beautiful grounds, with tremendous views of the ocean from our rooms and from the restaurant/bar areas. The room balconies are spacious and perfectt for evening drinks, watching the sunset. All the service staff were excellent, especailly those working in the restaurant and bar. Our room was kept clean, and the cleaning staff were quick to answer requests for face/cloths an extra shampoo, etc. The staff all work very hard and are very friendly and very helpfull.

However the management of the hotel leaves a lot to be desired. We had arranged this stay with our friends from San Jose. We had both reserved 6 months in advance and reconfirmed several weeks prior to arrival, specifying we wanted rooms in the hotel. Our friends had also done so. As well, our friends brought their grand daughter and paid extra for her. When we arrived, we were placed in a hotel room, as per our reservations, but our friends were placed in a studio up the hill. Unfortunately the grand-daughter has knee problems and difficulty walking and our friend gets somewhat car-sick in the carts that take you up to the studios and villas. But no matter, even after talking to several managers, the rooms could not be changed. Front desk stff insisted they were full, although we saw many people checking in and out during the week and it should have been easy to make the room change after the first two nights.

No wine is served at the upper pool bar (we do not drink hard liquor) and they ran out of wine at the restaraunt bar several evenings. The food in the restaurant is okay but monotonous after the second night (best of the weekend when there are more guests I guess)

Our package included a boat trip and we had arranged to take it on a Wednesday night. We (four of us) were picked up at the hotel and taken to the other end of the beach, and told by the driver that the captain of the boat would come from the sailboat in a dingy and pick us up. After 3/4 of an hour - no -one. We called back to the hotel and discovered that the boat cruises had been suspended. We walked back to the hotel along the beach. The next morning we talked to the staff and were given several (different) reasons why this had happened. Apparently some staff knew two days before that there would be no boat trip - but no-one informed us. Terrible communication and terrible coordination between downstairs offices and front desk. Several other examples of lack of communicsation were evidenced during our stay.

We were informed that several new managers had just been hired. We spoke to one of them on our last day and to his credit, after hearing our litany of complaints, he sent a bottle of champagne on ice to our room on our final night at the hotel. Nice. |we certainly hope that these new managers work hard to improve the management level services of the hotel.

Room tip: Ask for hotel room on top floor - best views, nice balconies, close to restaurant and most privacy, but remember no elevator so need to drag luggage upstairs. Did not seem to be any bus-boys to meet guests, although several hotel staff sit in reception area,.
