We were here in April, 2018 for a week. We had a nice time bonding as a family. We enjoyed the horseback riding on the beach. We loved the beach front villa we were given. We got a sweet deal on this vacation. We did not spend an arm and a leg because next door is still a big construction. It's a trade-off we can endure while we stay in a huge villa. We were not bothered by this. We enjoyed hearing the howler monkeys everyday. We loved seeing the giant iguana living in the resort. The beach in this part of Costa Rica has darker sands but still soft and powdery. Food was delightful, plentiful, but not your local Costa Rican food. We were expecting chefs preparing more of what crops from this rich ecosystem has ever produced, but it is a resort...a hotel...You have to venture out to experience first hand - the food that is out there. Our objective on this journey was to see the animals in the forest, ride the horses on the beach, see the dolphins in the wild and zip-lining in sweltering heat across the jungle. We put our beach bums aside to see the glory of Costa Rica and their protected natural habitats for these important mammals that may be close to extinction. And we achieved just that.

The Costa Rican people are lovely, respectful of their ecological footprint, and proud to show the world that they can protect this beautiful planet. We love this idea. We love every bit of it. This hotel provided just what we needed: comfort from our long journeys from the tours and filling hungry bellies every time we need to re-fuel for another tiring adventure.

All in all - this is not an expensive place, you will enjoy the comfort of the villas, life is good in Hotel Villas Playa Samara

Bad points: they are constructing a new extension to the resort, it's a two hour bus ride from the airport and the extra excursions are a little pricey (as they usually are in all of Costa Rica). That's it. This place is out of the way - truly isolated in the midst of nature and away from the "US Florida Beach Vacation" atmosphere of Tamarindo. If you are high maintenance and need to eat your cheeseburger with fries along with your Hawaiian pizza then this is NOT the place for you. However, if you enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with friendly, helpful and welcoming people, a clean, well kept and new room with character (NO high rises at this resort), excellent local fresh foods made by a great chef (some of the best food I've ever had in the Central America and the Caribbean Islands), and a great deal of activities with excellent guides then this is the place for you. No need to travel two hours for tours. The local guides and tours at this location are great - especially the "Wing Nuts" Zipline tour and Andrey (also works as concierge at the front desk) is the friendliest and best instructor/guide when it comes to surfing lessons and ATV tours. This is one of the BEST vacations I have ever had. If you don't enjoy this place then YOU are the issue, not the hotel.

Room Tip: Do not come here if you are high maintenance. This is a GREAT place for adventure, excellent local cuisine and just kicking back to relax.

Nice resort and great staff! Food is good, but as a vegan, I would appreciate a few more options. Me and my husband were lucky and got a cute newly renovated villa, but the site needs a little TLC to be perfect. Renovations are still in progress....the beautiful view of the ocean and the quiet location makes everthing better!!

Room Tip: Ask for a newly renovated villa.

We stayed here as part of an 8 day Monkey Tours adventure. The staff is very friendly and helpful, especially Andrey and Sergio. We loved our beach view condo which included kitchen, bathroom, large living room, bedroom and back deck. No tv or phone which was definitely ok with us. Food included all buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. A separate dinner service is available. Pretty good and plentiful with lots of fresh fruit and veggies. Love the ever present black beans and rice. Plenty of excursions available, we walked to Samara along the beach.
Tourists were mostly families from Canada and Costa Rica. Pool and grounds are well maintained. The improvements could be better and timely maid and room service

We stayed here as part of the multi-day Monkey Tours trip. Let's start with the positives. The staff is very friendly, and the grounds are well maintained - at least the parts that are functioning. The beach is amazing, with lots of hermit crabs, and some nearby horses that roam the beach. There are a lot of crushed up corals that litter the beach and roll around in the surf, so if one brushes against your foot don't be alarmed.

The parts that need improvement are plenty. The food service is slow, I think there was one waiter for over 20 tables, and probably one cook. Just getting breakfast out to everyone took at least an hour, and it was just toast and eggs for the most part.

The game room was in shambles. There is heavy construction next door, during they day you will hear it. The massages were pretty terrible, it was more like a light rubdown than an actual massage. The pool bar's hours were very limited.

Also, DO NOT go on the beach at night, unless you want a chance encounter with a family of ocelots. Fortunately for us, that's exactly what we wanted, and it was amazing.

Just adding a few more staff in the morning, and longer hours for the pool bar would go a long way to improving this location. As for the construction, there's not much that can be done until....its done.
