Everything started off so good...as it always does in the plot of a horror movie. We arrived Wednesday night, were a little put off by the tiny back alley entrance to the parking lot where “Ocho Bungalows Private” is spray painted on the side of a dumpster straight out of Boyz in the Hood, but none the less greeted by a nice woman who gave us a free drink, carried our bags, and was super sweet. She showed us to to our rooms - my husband and I had bungalow 3 and his parents had #4 - and promptly explained that you can’t flush toilet paper down the toilet. You put it in the trash. We should’ve left then but we assumed that was the way it was in Costa Rica. We noticed that evening that there were a few ants roaming around in our room. Not a huge deal so we overlooked it. Again, we should have left then. The next day we were at the pool with my in laws, when we discovered the sides of the pool are not straight down walls, they’re slopes that point towards the middle of the pool like a steep hill when you’re standing on the side. We discovered this when my 70 year old mother in law put her foot in the pool and slid down the side wall, smacking into the side and nearly cracking her head open. There was no sign. By Friday we were pretty done. The shower water was intermittent - spraying and then stopping suddenly and then squirting weakly and then spraying again, in no predictable pattern, like a bad techno DJ trying to find a decent beat. The bugs were getting worse in our room and starting to crawl on us in the night. Every time the maids cleaned our room they turned the AC off even though it was 90 degrees and 90% humidity outside. We finally decided to find another place and told them we’d be leaving Saturday morning instead of Monday morning. They refused to refund any of our money even though we were leaving due to the hostel-like conditions in what was advertised as a luxury property. When we returned from dinner that night our room was FULL of bugs. The maid had been in even though we put the do not disturb sign on the door, she turned off the AC and left the door open with only the bedside table light on, causing bugs to flock into our room towards the light. We spent over an hour killing bugs. The front desk offered us a can of raid and nothing more. We spent $350 a night to be here.

Perfect in every way! From the amazing staff and owner that spent time chatting about life, responding to questions, booking adventures, and ensuring our every need was met to the beautiful bungalows and relaxing beach side pool this was the perfect experience. My husband and I were able to relax and enjoy one another while our children were equally happy. I have already recommended this spot to friends and family!

We stayed in a bungalow with 5 people (two adults, three kids), and never felt crowded. The bungalow itself is so charming and well appointed, it was a truly unique experience. The place is clean and well cared for, it felt like resort level service. The pictures don't really give an accurate picture of how beautiful and unique the setting is. The place is lit by string lights and candles every night, and the sounds of the jungle are always present--birds, monkeys, etc. The pool area is so pretty and the chairs/loungers are so comfortable...we spent hours reading by the pool in the shade. There is a short path directly onto the beach, and the new Ocho bar on the beach is awesome. Comfortable lounge beach furniture, friendly staff, all nestled in the trees at the edge of the beach. It really was tough to leave. The location is great because it is an easy walk to everything but not so central...it is still quiet and peaceful. The owner was present and attentive, really fun. We would go back in a heartbeat.

They even surprised us with a special treat on our anniversary . I can’t say enough about how much we loved it here. Great people and absolutely beautiful surroundings. This is perhaps the most unique hotels we've every stayed at. It was a magical experience in every way. Here's a breakdown to help get a sense of how special this place is:

Location: You will not find a better location in Tamarindo. It is situated perfectly right on the edge of all the action. It is a 2 minute walk to all the restaurants and shopping, but also on the edge so it's not loud at night and you can escape the sometimes "crowded" parts of the beach. It is tucked away in a stunning jungle atmosphere. We saw as much wildlife at this hotel as we did during our stay in the rain forest. There's a family of howler monkeys above the rooms. A family of iguanas near the beach. Gorgeous birds visiting the pool area. A friendly (!) raccoon that visited the bar every night! (That's not normal where we come from but it was amazing!) We even saw a porcupine that Pia the bartender called "The Monster." There's a crocodile that lives nearby too but don't worry, IT'S ALL SAFE. It's the most spectacular, gorgeous property you can find! A nice pool that has views of the beach and the being right on the beach is such a difference maker!

STAFF: As amazing as the property is, the service is even better! The people here make this place even more special. Shon the owner was there every day and he treats his staff and his guests like family. Anything you want, he'll make happen for you. I can't say enough about the managers Mango, Pia and Karla. Mango whipped us up some welcome drinks and smoothies for the kids upon arrival. They made reservations for us anywhere we wanted to go. They picked us up at the airport. They set us up with the best surfing instructor Michal who was incredible. Some days, you're sitting by the pool and they come by and offer you fresh baked goods or smoothies. It's amazing. They are the the nicest, friendliest people on the planet. They put service and guests above business for sure. It was incredible. From the maid service, the bar service, the drivers. Everyone was amazing.

Rooms: The rooms were an architectural thing of beauty. The vision that Shon had is just phenomenal. There's a perfect amount of space, a cute kitchen with a refrigerator that they stock (free of charge) with snacks and beverages that came in handy at times. There's a grocery store 5 minutes away so if you want to stock up on drinks or snacks, it's a nice luxury to have. It's designed as if it's all open to the outside with glass windows all around and sheer curtains, but the A/C was lovely to escape the heat at times. The bathroom is very nice with a surfboard shower stall, actual hot water and water pressure. The one thing just to make people aware of, and you'll see this all around Costa Rica, is you can't flush toilet paper in the toilet. This was the first time we ever experienced this and while a little nervous, it was no big deal. Nothing smells, they clean the room at least 2 times a day, it's not a big deal.

This really is an oasis in the middle of Tamarindo. While we were a family of 4, we saw couples and families alike all enjoying this romantic location. It's one of the most beautiful places on earth. If you are staying in Tamarindo, you really need to stay here. We can't wait to go back. It was the best vacation we have ever had!

Room Tip: There are only 7 rooms and each is amazing. #7 is near the pool and closest to the beach, but we're talking matter of feet.
