“Rustic with a certain charm but missing its opportunity to truly excel.”

The good - it has an interesting, if somewhat hidden, location which is perhaps what it is trying to achieve. The owners (?) were very friendly and welcoming. It is surrounded, immersed in, natural vegetation which has a true eco-appeal and it isn't far from the beach (5 minutes walk). Elvi ensured that I had an excellent dinner and breakfast. Plates are wooden and cups coconut shells.
The not so good - The cabins /bungalows are dark and the air was a little musty. The shower (nice idea made out of a hollowed tree trunk) was perhaps on its way to returning to nature through natural decay. When I showered there was no hot water as the tap didn't work! The cold was ok! But when the shower was running the smell of decayed wood wafted through the air. There is no mosquito mitigation in place and the furnishing is basic, somewhat past it's best. It is rustic in the extreme which despite having an appeal needs standards to ensure custom. The central dining/bar area is pleasant but again it seems to lack a little balance. The lighting was poor and flashing strings of lights do not help!

I was the only guest (I think) and the personalities of the staff were great although no-one spoke much English. This may be a deterrent if you don't speak Spanish. The hotel is 3/4 kilometres from the main town so unless you have a car or transport it may be challenging finding it as the signage is poor. The Lonely Planet map saved the day!
The ideals are in place and it is trying to be distinctive. With a little facelift I am sure it could enhance its charms considerably.

The hospitality factor does, however, count for a lot and despite a small linguistic challenge the friendliness and service was exemplary.

We found this place in our Lonely Planet book. We thought since it was listed under "Top End" that it would a great place to stay for our honeymoon. We were completely unimpressed. They had a "pool" that was nothing more than a shallow dirty swamp. The bungalows looked lovely, but there were no mosquito nets over the beds so we got bit all night long. The bungalows are in the woods and there were mosquitos everywhere. Atiuhac is about a 30-45 minute walk from town and there is nowhere to eat nearby. It wasn't a nice place to "hang out". There is no view from your front porch and our hammock touched the ground. We ended up spending all of our time in town and would come back only when it was time for bed. Like I said all of this was unimpressive (especially for "top end", but the worst part was the breakfast they served. They do not put a lot of thought into it AT ALL. One morning we got sliced white bread with canned tuna fish on top. Really? On a good note, the ladies there were very nice and friendly and it was peaceful and quiet.

We've spent 4 days at the Atiuhac. It's run by two lovely spanish women from Barcelona. They have created a wonderful place in the middle of the caribbean jungle!! The cabinas are beautiful and original with the shower in an old tree trunk, palm leaves as bedside rugs, fresh tropical flowers every day, fresh towels, a fridge and breakfast on your own terrace!!! You awake by the howling of the monkeys and can relax in a hammock on your terrace....The only thing is, that the Atiuhac is located 6km north of Cahuita and it takes you about 30 min walk from there. If you have a car it's excellent, because you can get around easily, without one it can be quite strenuous to get around!
But I can highly recommend the Atiuhac if you love the special experience or if you are looking for a romantic, secret hide-out!!
