Yes, no bugs. These lovingly built 2 bedroom homes have screens and ceiling fans AND whisper quiet Air Conditioning. Wireless Internet works well. Hammocks on the porch immerse you in jungle sounds and only 100 yards walk to beautiful Cochles beach. Rates are very reasonable and management helpful when needed (and invisible when not needed).

Trip Advisor has messed up and listed the property 3 times. The primary listing under "specialty lodging" is here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g309265-d1603552-Reviews-La_Perla_del_Caribe-Puerto_Viejo_Province_of_Limon.html (where you will find my more detailed review) and another listing under "vacation rentals" is here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/VacationRentalReview-g309265-d1544511-La_Perla_del_Caribe_luxury_Italian_style_Villas-Puerto_Viejo_Province_of_Limon.html

As if that were not confusing enough, please DO NOT confuse this property with Villas De Caribe, ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g309265-d300515-Reviews-Villas_del_Caribe-Puerto_Viejo_Province_of_Limon.html) which is another place entirely.

La Perla del Caribes is a collection of several rental houses built and managed by an Italian couple (Antonio and Nadia) who have made their home near Puerto Viejo de Talamanca in the south of Costa Rica where the jungle meets the Caribbean sea. Most lodging options here are intended for the young and adventurous, surfers and eco-tourists. Some hotels are little more than cabins with open air windows -- basic and cheap. Others are more tastefully designed and priced higher, with a couple of very swanky lodges offering the posher jungle experience at lofty prices. The open air lodging designs of those others are great fun and lovely to behold, but the humidity can play havoc on your belongings and tech gear. Hot nights and aggressive insects can make sleeping a challenge, even with mosquito netting. I had none of these problems at La Perla (which was priced very competitively, by the way).

Antonio has applied his training as a builder in Italy to the task of hewing homesteads out of the jungle. The houses he built are handsome, sturdy and tight. No gaps were left for insects to enter, neither crawlies nor fliers. None. All windows are screened, and guests have the option of cooling with ceiling fans or whisper quiet air conditioning (I used both at various times of day). The mattress felt new and the bed was very comfortable. I would sleep like a baby with A/C, wake at dawn, then relocate to the hammock on the porch and sway with the symphony of the awakening jungle in the cooler morning air. I shared the same jungle with the eco-tourist hotels, but on my terms. I had my own kitchen and a well-appointed private bathroom with ample hot water as I needed it, a rare commodity in this region. These added comforts may seem unnecessary to some, but they enhanced the quality of my R&R and enabled me to feel very much at home. Other conveniences I valued included the refreshingly reliable wireless Internet access and the flat screen cable TV in the bedroom. Most of the area hotels that offer Internet service do so only in the common areas, which make Skype calling for personal or business needs a bit more public than I like. No problems like that at La Perla!

After my morning snooze in the hammock and a quick breakfast in my kitchen, it was a short walk to the beach (about 150 yards/meters) for a quick dip in the Caribbean. La Perla houses are located near the north end of Cocles beach, a bit more exclusive and less populated than the main public access a few hundred yards further south (across from the Totem Hotel). The sea varied from mirror-calm to surfer-rough during my stay, but it was always warm and inviting. I did not have a thermometer, but I would guess the water temp was in the mid-eighties. Entrance to the water was sandy and comfortable to the feet.

The southern Caribbean region of Costa Rica is a relatively undiscovered gem of coastline and Puerto Viejo is a friendly bohemian town with delightful international influences. Cafes, boutiques, restaurants, yoga studios and galleries are interspersed between native craft stalls, bike rentals, supermercados and pharmacias. During my visit I rented a bike one day, then switched to golf cart on another. Both were fun and functional ways to get around and there are plenty of seaside and jungle side activities to entertain. The food is good. In addition to Costa Rican and Caribbean fare, ex-pat Europeans have made their mark on the local culinary offerings, so Italian espresso, freshly baked French breads, hand made pasta and even crepes are locally available. I especially recommend the local seafood chowder, called "Rondon". It simmers a medley of local seafood in an elegantly seasoned broth based on fresh coconut milk. I had mine at Arrecife, the restaurant/bar/room rentals located directly on Punta Uva beach (Hi Nikki!). There is a lively nightlife scene most nights along the strip in "Puerto Viejo" with live music on the weekends.

Other Puerto Viejo reviews warn about petty theft. I personally experienced no problems, but, as in most places, its a good idea to keep track of your stuff and to secure important documents in a safe. An ounce of prevention... Once again, the meticulous attention to detail of La Perla house construction, combined with the proximity of the hosts and their two alert watchdogs had me feeling very secure for myself and my belongings during my stay. Nadia and Antonio were excellent hosts, respecting my privacy yet pleased to offer suggestions or assistance as needed. I highly recommend La Perla del Caribes as an exclusive, safe, comfortable and affordable lodging choice when visiting the Puerto Viejo area.

We stayed in 'la perla del caribe' Nadia's paradise. It was wonderful experience. Beautiful place. Paradise. Nadia and Antonio are such nice people that you want to stay there for ever. Puerto Viejo still has the raw, virgin beauty. We enjoy kind people, lavish nature, warm water, beautiful beaches and tasty food. I promise myself to go back there in the near future.
