The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful! The restaurant for dinner was great, breakfast was awesome, the bar at happy hour was pretty good with $4 drinks. We were on our honeymoon and they made a gorgeous towel decoration when we arrived. We had rain the second day so I didn’t think there was much to do at the resort (although there is a game area) or around time. We did go to the Jaguar Rescue which we highly recommend!

However, the bed was SUPER hard and I’m a side sleeper, so I didn’t get adequate sleep. We stayed in a standard room, so the beds may be different in the nicer rooms. There was air conditioning so that was very helpful in trying to at least get comfortable at night since it’s more humid on the Caribbean side.

Stayed here for three nights as part of a two week Costa Rica tour.
This is obviously quite a long established resort and although the facilities were clean and well tended it is in need of some TLC in places. There was quite a lot of (unobtrusive) maintenance going on when we were there so perhaps this is being addressed.

Our room was on the first floor of a two storey block, set amongst mature and well tended gardens. It had been freshly painted and the mattress was new and extremely comfortable. The sliding doors took a bit of getting used to but weren't a problem. The air conditioning worked and there was also a fan.

Breakfast, which included a egg cooking station, was very good. We did eat in the resraurant for two nights and the food was good but expensive. Maybe this was why most of the guests seemed to get a taxi into Puerto Viejo in the evening.

The evening restaurant waiter was friendly and obviously experienced in the industry but none of the other customer facing staff seemed to have had any customer skills training. I'm not suggesting they were rude, they just didn't seem to be enjoying their jobs. There did seem to be a senior manager around all the time but he didn't appear to be doing much.

This hotel could be so much better if the staff were more customer friendly. I would also suggest changing the restaurant menu to make it cheaper and more attractive than a trip into the local town. For the final night we walked a short distance down the road to Playa 506 on the beach side of the road, which was a hostel with a beach bar and restaurant attached. This was much better value for money and had a lot more atmosphere.

We stayed for 3 nights in a bungalow. Check in was swift and efficient but there was very little information about the actual hotel.
Our room was very rustic but clean and tidy. Neither the TV nor internet worked. There was no coffee/tea making fascilities.
We wanted a snack for lunch but there was only full lunch meals and they were quite expensive. In the end I opted for a creme brulee which was very small, very sweet and $8 I think. The beach side restaurant was not open.
The staff were very friendly and keen to point out the wildlife - within an hour of our arrival they showed us a mum and baby sloth on the path.
The evening meals were good as were the breakfasts.
We thought the location was good and it was an easy walk in the daytime to Puerto Viejo town. We found it a relaxing place to be and it grew on me the longer we stayed.

This is a hard review to do, simply because it could be so much better! I also believe it may well be the best accommodations in Puerto Viejo. Despite the preceding, I must rate Cariblue as no better than as a 3-star establishment.

Great location, beautiful facilities, and some outstanding staff.

Cariblue also has a very active and hard working General Manager.

The over-riding issue, however seems to be ineffective leadership.

The most obvious issue is deferred maintenance in the facilities. We stayed in 3 different
"rooms" and none had everything "working". The first had a sink that did not drain, nor did the telephone, the TV nor the internet. The second had a TV that did not work, nor did the internet or phone. The third still did not have a working telephone.

All three also had an abundance of small insects, particularly, ants.

Each of these defects were reported and we were moved to the next. But we never saw anyone doing anything to correct the problems.

We cannof recommend that anyone book at Cariblue, unless they are prepared to face such frustrations.

I just spent a fabulous 5 day holiday with my son at the Cariblue. I had a beautiful welcome, all the staff is very kind and always available, my room a superior, very nice with a huge King size bed, always impeccable, a special mention at the generous breakfast buffet, with a great choice, we also almost always ate at the restaurant I found an excellent quality and excellent portions a menu with a lot of choice but we, after trying the lasagna and carbonara, we have always repeated, also excellent pizza !!! We went horseback riding and surfing lessons, they organized everything in the hotel with excellent operators, the horses and the equipment were very well kept. But the most surprising thing about the Cariblue is its perfect location about 1.5 km from the village: it lies between the golden Cocles beach and the jungle and is like being in a botanical garden with many species of plants, flowers and many animals , we have seen monkeys, various types of sloths, a wild rabbit called watusa always running in the garden, colorful frogs, giant blue butterflies, tropical birds, it is truly a paradise in paradise. Thanks Cariblue for everything and Pura Vida
