This was my second time to stay at Hotel Pura Vida. I love love love the atmosphere and the owners and receptionists at the desk are always very friendly and accommodating. I stayed in a room with a private bath each time and the room itself is so cute and the tile work is amazing! Relaxing music can be heard and there are plenty of hammocks to take a nap in. Very open and outdoorsy but I recommend this place to everyone. It is quiet enough to take a nap and hear the rain but if you are looking for some entertainment during the day, it is close to the soccer fields where many locals play on Sundays. I LOVE HOTEL PURA VIDA!

Room Tip: Private bath is a little extra but I recommend it if you are not alone.

Hotel Pura Vida is a beautiful oasis in the midst of Puerto Viejo. The location is excellent. It's a short walk from the bus station, and close to many area restaurants and shops. We walked from Hotel Pura Vida to some beautiful nearby beaches--though next time I'd rent a bike instead. There were also great attractions nearby like The Chocolate Forest Experience at Caribeans, the Jaguar Rescue Center, and the Sloth Sanctuary.

The Hotel itself is peaceful and quiet, aside from the neighbor's dog barking and the roosters crowing in the morning. We spent several afternoons in the hammocks reading, sleeping, or sipping on iced coffees. The staff was extremely helpful and recommended area restaurants (Bread and Chocolate was one of our favorites), a nearby massage parlor (Bliss), area beaches, and attractions. They always asked what we thought upon our return from various day trips so that they could update their recommendations to others. On one tour we had a bad experience with a driver, and one of the owners called the tour company immediately to report this.

Puerto Viejo was HOT and with no A/C, I definitely felt overheated at times in the room. However, the lobby area downstairs was always cooler and had lots of shaded areas. Our room had a ceiling fan which cooled down my friend as it was right above her bed. I just took many cold showers when it was too hot.

The open air bathroom in our room (#6) was GORGEOUS! The water pressure and temperature control were great, which was nice compared to what I have heard from other travelers staying elsewhere.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to this area.

I have stayed at Hotel Pura Vida several times. If you are looking for quiet and nice euro style accommodations close to the center of town, it is hard to beat. Personally, I like being in town for the night life in Puerto Viejo, I head out to the beaches during the day.

this is a very cute hotel with a cozy lobby including hammocks and wifi.it's a quiet atmosphere definately not a party place. its a good bargain for sure considering the cleanliness and the area. be prepared to get used to the roosters though. they crow every hour starting around 3 or 4 in the morning. don't go there for the service, although they are very nice people, they don't strike up conversations and they keep they friendliness to a minimum but it didn't bother us at all. if you don't have a car, we would recommnd to rent bikes to access the furthur beaches which are worth seeing, it's actually where we spotted our first sloths.

we stayed there four nights and we got to relax and had enough time to visit what we wanted to visit.

Room Tip: the rooms are not sound proof. there are no real windows, its just screens so the noise gets in

This place is tops. The rooms were clean, the owners Almut and Luis were superb hosts, the reception staff, Noemy and Sonja were the best ever helping us with our travel arrangements, and the place was quiet. The cleaning staff very firendly and efficient. Great ceiling fans that kept us quite comfortable. The bathroom was clean and bright. There was a laundry area outside. The other guests were fun yet very polite and gentile. The location is in a very quiet and safe part of the town yet only two blocks from the action. Security was excellent.

What more can I say? My wife, who normally likes 5 star hotels, would be VERY happy with these accomodations.

PS. I accidentally checked the swimming pool button, but the hotel does not have one :)

This family runned hotel in Puerto Viejo wins our personal award in our 2 weeks trip to Costa Rica. The family is friendly, helpful and make you feel welcome while leaving some privacy for you. It is a small and quite hotel and the rooms are really nice combining wooden and white walls. The Hotel owners (Costa rican/ German couple) do some work around (gardening, conserving the wood etc.), which gives it a human touch.

It is located in Puerto Viejo town an very close to the bus station, which makes it convenient to get and leave from there. The breakfast is quite satisfactory, large plate of fruit with toasts and jam.

Our tip: Spend some time in the afternoon in the hammock at the garden and get a smoothie from the reception (Pura Vida;-) )
