“Friendly, pretty, comfortable, safe hotel in Puerto Viejo”

This hotel is a gem. It's owned and run by a German wildlife biologist and his Costa Rican wife. It's a very pleasant and safe place, located just a couple blocks from the Main street in Puerto Viejo and one block from the fabulous Soda Lidia. We paid extra for a room with air conditioning, which was well worth it because this part of the country is very hot and humid. Rolf and Juana took us on the best rainforest/wildlife hike of our trip. She has an eagle eye for spotting birds and other animals, and he offered a wealth of knowledge about everything we saw. They carry a telescope for amazing up-close views of birds. Rolf was also very helpful in answering my many questions by email before we arrived. I highly recommend this hotel.

If you want to stay directly in Puerto Viejo this is a very good option.
The rooms are simple, but comfortable and spotless. They also have real hot water and great cross-ventilation, so we slept really well.
Its close to everything, but the rainforest behind is always louder than the town in front. So its no problem to get to bed early in preparation for their great guided rainforest tour,
which is highly recommended.

Great place to stay in puerto viejo. very clean, large room. Rolf and Juana make an incredible guide combination for nature hike at Manzanillo. Juana has the ability to pick out wildlife for nature at distances. We say toucans, monkeys, snakes and sloths not to mention other birds and bugs. Well worth the price. The room was very pleasant and the beds comfortably. The best value of any hotel we stayed in in Costa Rica

We've travelled a lot to Puerto Viejo over the years, and this time we finally managed to get a room at Cabinas Tropical. This was the fourth time we tried, but it had always been full.

The rooms are large, with fridge, balcony, fan, large bathroom with hot water, some with TV. Beds are quite comfortable, some noise from neighbours depending on the room, but only during the day/ afternoon. Very nice owners indeed. Convenient location two blocks from downtown, about 20 min walk or 5 min by bike to Playa Cocles. So far, this is the mid-range place ($38/night) we've stayed at in Puerto Viejo.

Cabinas Tropical offers the seclusion of a beautiful walled garden, immaculate screened rooms, hot water showers in spacious tiled bathrooms as well as a frig and fan. Television and AC are also available in some rooms. The courtyard has a ranchito and each room has its own balcony or covered patio with chairs, table and hammock.

The owners, Rolf and Juana Blancke took us on the best jungle hike we have taken anywhere in Central America. To have a local biologist as a guide, and his wife, who has the eyes of an eagle, made every part of our hike interesting and informative. With their Leica scope, we were able to see and even photograph from afar. We saw all three species of toucans and other tropical birds, yellow eyelash viper, poison dart frogs, caiman, both species of sloth, monkeys and numerous colorful and bizarre insects. They served us a great brunch halfway through the hike.
The beaches of Manzanillo and Cauhita National park are close enough for an afternoon or day trip. A great choice of restaurants are a couple minute walk from the hotel. We swam a couple times a day at just minutes away at Playa Negra or off the point in town.
We had a great time!

Cabinas Tropical has everything my wife & I need when visiting Puerto Viejo. The facilities are secure and immaculately clean. The staff is friendly & helpful (Spanish, English & German spoken). Grounds are pleasant, and attractive with a relaxed atmosphere. Rooms have hot water showers, refrigerators, patio hammocks, and free wireless Internet for your laptop.

Rolf Blanke, who owns/manages the place with his lovely wife, Juana, is a biologist and author of several books. He’s spent over 20 years studying neo-tropical flora and fauna. Together they conduct hiking and birding tours through the nearby Manzanillo/Gandoca Reserve & Cahuita Nat’l. Park.

A plus for us is that the hotel is located a convenient walk (5 minutes) from the many superb restaurants in Puerto Viejo, but it is far enough away from the bustling party scene that the town can be some nights. You can have a quiet evening if you want. Swimming, and surfing beaches are also walking distance. There is no need for a car if you stay here–you can walk, or rent a bicycle for a few dollars a day, to get anywhere you need to.
