“An amazing jungle experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2011

We booked a 3 day / 2 night package from San Jose which we felt was the right amount of time. The journey was interesting taking in the countryside by mini bus and then the boat journey to the lodge was exciting.

The rooms are fairly basic, we had a quad room as we are a family of 4 which meant we were at the end of a line of rooms and the next door room was vacant which meant we had more privacy. Be aware there are no windows on the rooms and 3 sides of our room was net mesh. For us it added to the experience though and it was amazing to be right in the middle of the jungle which we all really loved.

The food was buffet style at fixed times which was fine for us as that fitted in with our excursions and when we wanted to eat. The food was of a reasonable standard and we were all happy with it.

We went on a turtle watching tour to the national park which was well worth it. We saw turtles nesting elsewhere on our travels around the country and it was certainly very impressive the turtle conservation programme at Tortuguerro.

We were advised not to swim in the sea due to the rip currents.

Overall we felt it was worthwhile taking the trip over there.

We recently stayed at this lodge during our trip to Costa Rica. Tortuguero is an amazing place to visit, nothing quite like it. We debated whether to go as it was out of season for seeing the turtles but our trip to Costa Rica would not have been complete without it.
Getting there was an adventure but well organised. The only problem is that if it rains, which it can do very easily, then there's very little to do. The boats do go out during the rain and ponchos are on hand for this reason. Unfortunately one of our safaris was cut short due to very heavy rain but our guide took us out kayaking later in the day. We found the night safari to be less exciting although we were lucky to see quite a lot of wildlife.
The lodge is next to the Caribbean on one side where the beach is quite wild and interesting. The food was very good at the lodge.

We were given the honeymoon suite which came with a huge bath in the room complete with animal sculptures. The odd thing was that we had screens as windows but no windows !!! which made it a little noisy when people would walk by the room.
Due to the closeness to the water there was also abundance of mosquitos but we kept them at bay using plenty of anti-mosquito protection.

There were lots of howler monkeys around which was an interesting experience.

The whole trip was very relaxing and we really enjoyed it.

The pool is turtle shaped too.

This lodge allows you the remoteness to experience the Jungle. The boat trip to get there as well was amazing seeing lots of wild life. Lots of wildlife around the lodge area as well. Grounds are nice and the staff very friendly. But it is in the jungle, so if you are expecting all the comforts of home....don;t. There is no A/C all the lodges are open with netting for the top half of the walls.Nothing wrong with it, a little warm at night and you can hear your neighbors, but just don;t expect the Ritz. Dim power, no TV or appliances in the room as remote. This added to the charm. The restaraunt is a communal kind of a thing where you dinner time is scheduled and may vary , you can't just go eat when you want. As long as you aware upfront it should not be a big deal. Most people spent 3 nights there, we spent 5 as I love to take wildlife pics and as well i booked 3 days of Trapon fishing. This was awesome as well, caught many tarpon over 6 feet long on one of the days out. Note though: You will only catch Tarpon there when it is sunny and flat water in the ocean. Any cloud or rain and the fishing comes to an absolute stand still there.

Arriving was exciting, but....

The price was $610 for 2 nights.
As travelers, we are familiar with "ecotourism", and we would not recommend Turtle Beach Lodge in Tortuguero, Costa Rica.

SERVICE
- They charged us $5 dollars for 10 minutes of usage. In those 10 minutes we barely received adequate service as it took too much time to open 3 pages. It's a rip off!!!!!

-They have a beach, but it is prohibited to enter the water.

FOOD
-Be careful with the fruit juices. They are what we consider tasteless, colored water.
- You have to eat in a short prescribed interval of time. It is not flexible. We asked and no one informed us of alternatives if we wish to eat outside of that time. It seems there was no other way around it.

POSITIVE
Our guide, Jose, has a contagious enthusiam for nature, especially birds. He provided userful tips that we were able to utlilize on our trip in Colombia (not to hold on to trees in the forest because you never know what is waiting to bite)

Unlike anything I've ever seen before...out in the middle of literal paradise, past the other hotels in the area...keep going in your guided boat until you reach the sign at the end of the 'driveway' reading Turtle Beach Lodge. There, you will find the most amazingly kind and helpful people. Anselmo, my guide, definitely made my trip unforgettable. This place is a must-visit for anyone who needs to get away from it all. It is wonderful. Please tell Anselmo I said hello and I miss him! In fact, the entire staff there is fantastic.

From the moment we were picked up in Alajuela to our drop off 3 days later everything about this place was amazing. Our guide Andy with his passion for his country and his knowledge of the local wildlife, the beautiful endless beach and warm Caribbean ocean and the wonderful staff all made this a unique and special place. Thank you for sharing...

My partner and I booked a 2day/3night package here to start off our Costa Rica Adventure, and we could not have picked a better place. It's not huge and it's not luxury, but it's the most peaceful way to enjoy Tortuguero National Park. The beach was nice, but the water was a bit rough (there was a very strong undertow, so watch your children). The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The tour guides were very knowledgeable, and guide you through the winding Tortuguero canals and through the jungle. There is a lot of wildlife, and be ready to be waken up by the howler monkeys at 5am. Overall, there isn't a lot to do here except for enjoying the surrounding nature and relaxing :)
