We visited Fincas Naturales after a morning of other activities. We thought it would be a unique experience for our kids (ages 10 and 6), and that it would be fun for them to see the butterflies up close. While the people running it were very nice (as everyone in Costa Rica seems to be!), we were left waiting for the guide for nearly 20 minutes, then had to walk back to office to have someone track him down. (It turned out that he was with a different family.)

The garden itself is beautiful an well sustained with many beautiful butterflies. There is a "lab" where there are many different stages of the insects developing. and our guide allowed the kids to hold caterpillars and touch the different larvae and pupae.

Next we toured through the crocodile exhibit. There we found different turtles, crocodiles, and caymen. Our guide, Michael, was very knowledgeable about the different species and answered many questions.

Here's the drawback. While the location is beautiful, well kept, and informative, it doesn't really stand out from any other butterfly garden or zoo exhibit we've seen anywhere else. The kids were rather bored by it, too. There are many things to do in Manuel Antonio, and I don't think this experience is one that's very unique.

While visiting Quepos on the Windstar, my husband and I decided to take in the night tour at Fincas Naturales. Although this tour is not offered through the cruise line's shore excursion program, we had learned about the night tour online and because the ship was not leaving Quepos until 10:00 pm, we were able to take the 5:30-7:30 tour.

Our guide, Johnnie, was absolutely great! He is a student with a special interest in amphibians and reptiles (our interests as well; we are biologists) and photography Is his hobby. So we were able to take advantage of his biological knowledge, photographic skill and true enthusiasm for the animals that we ran across. We were very fortunate in that about 4:45 it started raining, so we knew that the frogs would be out and about for the tour. And they were! We saw two species of glass frogs, scores of red eyed tree frogs, the massive smoky jungle frogs, Goliath frogs, dink frogs, and several other species that I won't remember until I download my pictures. Three species of snakes, all harmless and very
cool. We also saw sleeping butterflies (so it was finally possible to get a great photo!), sleeping lizards (including baby basilisks). And incredibly impressive - their huge male crocodile trying to entice the female into mating - got to hear him vocalize and we were able to witness him bouncing water off his back through vibrartion. Truly amazing. And saw some other interesting insects, such as the rhinoceros katydid and a whip scorpion.

I can not recommend the night tour highly enough, and if you are lucky enough to get Johnnie as your guide you will be very lucky (try requesting him if your interest is in amphibians or reptiles).

It was a $10.00 taxi ride from the port and took about 15-20 minutes each way. Only problem was that when we asked to go to Fincas Naturales, neither the taxi driver nor the port official knew the park by that name. But the taxi driver called the dispatcher and they eventually figured it out. The problem is that the sign for Fincas does not call it that - maybe something like Manuel Antonio Nature Park? But it is across the street from a well known hotel (check out the other reviews here for the name of the hotel and you should be fine). I appears that reservations are required for the night tour.

This was our favorite tour in our week of cruising around Costa Rica. We head off to La Paloma in Drake Bay tomorrow and hope to have additional reviews completed soon.

I loved the close proximity to the resort (see review of Si
Como No Resort). There was a spectacular butterfly enclosure (netting) in the rain forest. There were caimen and crocodile viewing and reptile viewing amid the forest.
Plenty of area fauna and flora, lots of monkeys and other
animals that could be viewed. Staff was great and we saw
and learned a lot... acual visit date was 2010.

We visited Fincas Naturales in the early afternoon the day after we arrived, so we were looking for a low key activity but something to do with the kids. We really only checked out the butterfly garden that day, and although the butterflies are much less active in the warmth of the day, you really get to see them up close since they tend to land on the foliage. They are flying around more in the AM which is a different experience, but not necessarily better, in our opinion. Nancy was our guide and she was terrific with our youngest daughter.

We made reservations to go on the night tour but that afternoon a huge thunder and lightening storm rolled in. We called Fincas about canceling and they couldn't have been nicer. They told us it was up to us. We opted not to go and rescheduled for the next night.

Lots of frogs, a few snakes, etc. Worth the money and time. It's not the high excitement of zip lining, or adventure tours, but a nice, quiet place, with an opportunity to get up close to costa rican wildlife and plants.

Hi everybody!
I was in the “wildliferefuge” opposite the “si como no hotel” to see the frogs and butterflies and I met Johnny the manager of the place. He helped me to see lots of frogs and butterflies and we had some wonderful sightings. With the help of Johnny, I could take lots of good pictures and I´m grateful for that. I recommend the place to everybody, who is interested to see many different animals, like Butterflies, other Insects, reptiles and amphibians, etc.
Kind regards from Germany
Benny
