We were a party of seven and all 4 rooms had something different and were very nice. We really enjoyed the food in their restaurant. I highly recommend it!

Thank you for your quick and to the point review about Grano de Oro.  We are excited to hear that you enjoyed the food in the restaurant and that you saw the uniqueness of staying in a boutique hotel that feels different from the cookie cutter chain hotels.  We will continue to work hard to create unique and different experiences for our guests.  Hope you come back soon.

Wonderful hotel and previous ratings are accurate

Our lower price room was smaller but very nice with a queen bed (90% of a Canadian Queen bed). Breakfast in the dining room on the open patio was wonderful but evening sea bass dinner with orange sauce was even better. Sent our compliments to the Chef.

Wine list is a bit pricey is my only other comment. Location is not perfect but it is a $3 taxi ride to the Market and downtown.

Customer service in the hotel, arrival and departure were excellent too.

Room Tip: Suggest that you request a king bed for adults.

Outstanding hotel with charm, amenities, service, security, and professional staff. The airport cab service - arranged through the hotel for the "going rate" of $30. US dollars - was EXCELLENT, and Omar, deserves special recognition! The transition from the airport, associated immigration and customs into the city couldn't have been any smoother. Welcoming staff had smiles, social and linguistic skills, and an ambassadorial demeanor that far surpassed many hotels in the U.S. and made check-in efficient and seamless. The associated gift shop is certainly stocked with a variety of Costa Rica souvenirs as well as international postage stamps. The room itself was immaculate, incredibly comfortable, and spacious, and the bath/shower was delightful and exceeded expectations. The restaurant within the facility offered a wide-range of entrees with an interesting flair (for example, conger eel and calamari risotto) and the bar service was adequate. And the wine selection is good. It is important in the restaurant to make certain that one speaks slowly and distinctly; it is wise to remember that English is not the native language. The ambience and furnishings suggest a very judicious decorator, and the courtyard provides a backdrop steeping in romance, charm, and local flora. Breakfast in the courtyard is exceptional.

You will regret should you not choose this property for your overnight accommodations. I WILL go back to this property when visiting San Jose again.

Generally San Jose is simply a stop over on your way somewhere else in the lovely country of Costa Rica. Hotel Grano de Oro is a wonderful oasis in this gritty city. You are welcomed with a a cool cloth and a tropical drink and immediately feel the stress of travel disappear. The hotel is lovely and impeccably maintained. There are little out of the way gardens and fountains as you wind your way to your room. We stayed 3 nights total on our way in and out of Costa Rica, so had two different rooms. Both were extremely comfortable with white tiled baths, crisp sheets, comfortable beds...rather than feeling like you are in an impersonal hotel you feel as if you are staying in an upscale home. However, that doesn't mean a B&B atmosphere, it's certainly a hotel with all the privacy of a hotel. The restaurant is elegant and the food delicious. There is both an inner courtyard open to the sky for al fresco dining and an interior restaurant with huge windows that can be open or closed depending on the weather.
The only negative is that the area around Hotel Grano de Oro is not attractive. Most of the properties are behind razor wire and high walls, though that is the case pretty much everywhere in the city, which is too bad. We did feel it was OK to walk to the local market and city center, but be careful of the uneven side walks and pot holes that are everywhere.
When we returned to Hotel Grano de Ora after our week long stay in the country it felt like coming home.

This hotel is amazing.

Friendly, helpful staff make you feel welcome and provide anything you need while there. The hotel itself is about 25 minutes from the airport and a 15 minute walk from the main market in the heart of San Jose.

Rooms are extremely nice, villa suite was amazing.

Restaurant was great with very good food and a fantastic open courtyard.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a terrace, or if you want to splurge on a high-end experience ask for the villa...

We spent one night at the Hotel Grano de Oro before flying back home. The hotel is beautifully appointed and there are little treats around every corner. Bamboo privacy walls, patio fountains and an outside garden "inside" the hotel.

The service was top notch and the food was delicious and elegant.

Room Tip: Request a room on the upper floors. There are different wifi hotspots in the hotel so ask if it'...

There are certainly lower-cost options of places to stay in San Jose but if you can STAY HERE! It has a romantic flaire that was perfect for the first couple nights of our honeymoon. It is a fascinating , beautiful building and the restaurant is a wonderful culinary experience. Get the tres leche dessert! We had a garden room and it was really fun to wake up to beautiful bird calls. Great location with being walking distance or a short taxi ride to sites around town. The only critique I would have is the night we were there the hof tub wasnt heated very much. We eould stay here again if back in San Jose.
