This was the perfect place to start our Costa Rica vacation. The hotel is beautiful, clean and the service is phenomenal. We arrived in mid-afternoon after two long flights from NYC. We were welcomed graciously and settled in to our room. The front dest gave us directions to a grocery store and we headed off to there before walking down the main street towards San Jose to buy some sunglasses for our trip. In the evening we went to the restaurant. The food was excellent and the prices were equivalent to North East USA may be just below. The ambience is lovely, furniture wonderful and service attentive and polite. We got dressed up a bit for the occasion and were glad we did as the restaurant deserves it. In the morning we enjoyed a filling breakfast before heading to Arenal. I highly recommend this hotel for couples and for those looking to get away from the big US chain hotels.

Beautiful Hotel with an excellent restaurant and convenient location. We stayed two non consecutive nights and they were kind enough to store our luggage in between while we went on our rafting trip. If you dont need to be right next to the airport this is a better choice than the Marriot.

We stayed at Grano de Oro for 2 nights on the tail end of our trip to Costa Rica. First of all, there's not that much to do or see in San Jose and we were there Dec 30 and 31 so all the museums were closed. Grano de Oro is a beautiful renovated hotel, and it's very nicely decorated. It's in town with absolutely nothing nice within walking distance but cabs are easy to get. The restaurant is gorgeous and the best food we had in Costa Rica but very expensive. As for the hotel, our room was very small but cute and comfortable. The jacuzzi on the roof had no view, was tiny and not hot enough. My biggest complaint was the customer service. Throughout our trip in Costa Rica, we had the best service in all hotels, people were so nice and helpful. Not at Grano de Oro. We asked them to book a white water rafting tour for us. In all the hotels we stayed, we always had the hotels book our tours (zip lining, ATV, etc) because they know the companies. Grano de Oro booked us with the WORST company: completely unacceptable (late, horrible food, no water, no toilet paper in bathrooms, dangerous, the list goes on and on). The hotel really should have done their research on this or told me they had no idea and I would have picked a company from my guidebook. When I spoke with hotel manager about it, he was sorry but didn't do anything about it (could have perhaps at least offered to buy us a drink or bottle of wine as an apology?) AFter all, the tour they booked for us was $100 per person.
Bottom line: there's not much going on in San Jose so unless you need to be there, get in and get out. If you want to do some touring of the area (to visit volcanos or national parks or museums in San Jose) , better to stay outside of the city -- we stayed in Alajuelo at a place called Buena Vista which I loved and which is about 20 minutes from the airport and 40 minutes to Volcano Poas.

We spent 2 nights here during our Costa Rican vacation and were very happy with the Hotel Grano de Oro. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the breakfast was phenomenal, and the location was convenient. It's in town, but not super close to the main city center (so quiet) and it's about 30 minutes from the airport (traffic depending). There are a few decent restaurants nearby, and the place has a number of amenities (gift shop, hot tub, free coffee at all hours etc.). Definitely recommended if you need a place to stay in San Jose.

A beautiful hotel, restored very well. Reception staff very helpful and the rooms well appointed.
Bed is very comfortable. The first night in the Vista room was just amazing - slept with curtains open. Dinner was very nice, as was breakfast.

Absolutely worthwhile visiting.
