Nice hotel close to central San Jose. Outside and public areas are beautiful. The open courtyard outside the restaurant inside the hotel could be considered breathtaking. The restaurant was very good and the ambience was lovely. The front desk staff was very pleasant and helpful.

Stayed in a deluxe room which was fairly small. Bathroom was pretty basic. Bed was ok. It was fine a short two-night stay, I really wouldn't stay longer than that. Didn't really feel the accommodations were worth the price, which was high for a San Jose hotel with no resort amenities. At the time of our visit there was major construction going on.

This is a pretty well-known hotel so it's easy for cab drivers to interpret when you tell them where you need to go. Located about 25 minutes from San Jose airport.

Beautiful, boutique style hotel that centres around a lovely courtyard that is beautifully lit up at night. Attentive service, good food served and great value. Bar prices are really reasonable too. Would stay again!

We had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Grano de Oro on our recent trip to Costa Rica. What a beautiful hotel!

We were there on 3 separate days/nights as we toured different parts of the country.

The hotel is a beautifully restored Victorian Mansion with different rooms on different levels. I chose the Garden Room Suite and loved it! We had our own private terrace and the room was gorgeous. The staff couldn’t have been more accommodating at every level.

The restaurant was amazing-food was of the highest caliber, taste & creativity.

Would highly recommend using this Hotel as your entry and exit hotel from Costa Rica. Beautiful, luxurious & serene.

This hotel is a gem! It's a lovely converted colonial manor house that's well located in the heart of San Jose but feels like a little oasis. My romantic was tranquil and comfortable and there were lovely touches like a fruit platter on arrival. My absolute favourite thing was the staff, who were genuinely helpful and friendly. The restaurant is also very good. They don't have a buffet breakfast (probably because it's a small hotel) but have a la carte breakfast with a good selection and everything I had was yummy. I had dinner in the restaurant two nights in a row - it was very good both times!

I hope to stay here when I return to San Jose in a few months. I visited during low season, and unfortunately I don't think the budget will stretch to the high season rates... But fingers crossed...

This lovely old mansion in the heart of San Jose is a little haven of quiet in the midst of the hustle and bustle of San Jose. We arrived, were met on the street, and showed in to the very welcoming reception desk, complete with a cool drink – a big aah after the airport and drive into town. We have to say a big gracias to the desk staff who were very helpful to us as we struggled with trying to connect with our travel agent to get the right size SIM card for our phones. They placed the calls for us and spoke to the agency staff to better explain what we needed (it was the weekend and neither the on-call agency staff nor we were fluent in the other’s language, particularly when it came to technical explanations!). When the driver came with the correct SIM card, the desk could not find us (as we were exploring as you will read below), but graciously accepted the card from the driver and expressed our appreciation. They really could not have been more accommodating and helpful. We also made reservations for dinner at the hotel restaurant and arranged our transport the next morning with the desk.

Once we were checked in, we were shown up to our room on the second floor of the main building, where we were transported back to the gracious colonial past of the country. Our room was quite comfortable, even if relatively small. You walked in to the room and one wall had a luggage rack, a large old wooden wardrobe, a small table with coffee/tea makings and a TV above it, and round glass table with two chairs in the corner of the room. We had a large window that overlooked a mass of greenery with lots of birds flitting around. Along the other wall was a comfortable king-size bed with a round night table on either side. There was a rather small bathroom in the corner of the room, which contained a deep bathtub with a tiled surround, a modern toilet and an adequate vanity. The wardrobe held a safe, mini-frig, and robes. The overall ambiance was one of old-fashioned colonial charm, which was quite refreshing.

Even better were the hotel grounds, which are beautiful but constrained. There is really just the old mansion itself – there is not a big expanse of lawn with swimming pool and lounge area. You wander through the many corridors, floors, patios and nooks of the old mansion, and everywhere you look are flowers, lush greenery, orchids, fountains, and birds flitting about. You keep getting lost and find yourself poking down a corridor that you have already explored, and finding the Jacuzzi becomes a little treasure hunt in its own right. But the babbling of the fountains and the singing of the birds makes your exploration a pleasant one. We did finally find the Jacuzzis on the sunny upper floor, which also made for good bird watching.

We had reservations at the hotel’s restaurant, but we did not appear to need them at the early hour that we booked (we hadn’t eaten since our morning plane). The restaurant was lovely and had a very welcoming outdoor seating area that was tempting, but the staff appeared to be concerned about rain so we ate inside in the elegant dining room. Please see our separate review of the Restaurante Grano de Oro for details, but suffice it to say here that it was the best meal that we had in Costa Rica! We had been told that the restaurant alone was reason enough to stay at this hotel, and we believed it after our meal. The service was efficient and gracious, the food plentiful and delicious, and the price was an excellent bargain!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Grano de Oro, and it seem remarkably quiet considering its location in the heart of town. We enjoyed having the window to allow in the fresh air breezes and to hear the bird song. That is, until about 4 in the morning when the birds woke up again. They must have heard, like us, the honking and racket noises of the city. I guess that was our introduction to Costa Rica where the mornings always seem to start early with the wake-up alarm calls of howler monkeys and birds to tell you to get up and enjoy the cool of the morning! Loss of some sleep was a small price to pay for the experience. We know you will enjoy the Grano de Oro as much as we did.
