We stayed here for 2 nights before continuing our tour of Costa Rica. It was way beyond our expectations. The hotel itself has such a lovely historic feel and is very elegant. The room we had was superb - very comfortable and all needs considered. The restaurant and bar is the jewel in the crown. We spent a lovely rainy afternoon in the bar, watching the comings and going. The food both in the evening and breakfast was top quality - beautifully presented and fantastic tastes. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Really can not recommend this hotel enough and we are so looking forward to spending our last night in Costa Rica here on the 12th Jan.

We stayed for our arrival night in Costa Rica (very bizarre we had appointment with local friends and wanted to enjoy a drink together in the bar but they didn't want to let us in around 10.15 pm.....barman had decided to close as it was very quiet......a pity ). But we booked again after 10 days for our departure night. Nice place with character. Excellent benedict eggs were recommended to us for breakfast and indeed they were great. Nice smiling staff. Dinner experience on our last night was good, just the team too stressed as it was really busy. Definitely stay there if you want a colonial experience.

We spent two nights at Presidente on the front end of our 10 day Costa Rica trip and 2 days at the end at Hotel Grano de Oro. This small hotel is very well maintained , our room and bathroom was small but functional and comfortable. WiFi is free and fast. Staff is friendly and helpful. Great place to stay in San Jose, Costa Rica

The Grano de Oro is a clasically styled hotel near to a number of busy roads. The area around the hotel is ok but as other guests have noted doesn't look particularly enticing at night. You have to walk several blocks to reach shops and restaurants and those are typical city type chain restaurants.

We liked the way that the hotel had several Christmas trees with lights and festive decorations.

We were given room 10 (Deluxe room) which is at the front of the hotel facing the road. The road outside the hotel is ok but there are two parallel roads that have constant 24 hour traffic, so the room suffers from very audible road noise and vibration from trucks. This could be improved by adding secondary glazing to offer guests a quieter stay.

Apart from the road noise, room 10 is spacious. The bed was very comfortable and we slept very well with earplugs.

The bathroom could however benefit from updating, especially the shower. The toiletries were contained in large dispensers attached to the wall reminiscent of the type in a health club. Not really the standard you would expect in a hotel of this quality. The room could benefit from a USB charging port.

What we did like was the free non-alcoholic drinks and snacks available in the mini bar. These were replenished daily. A nice touch.

We ate at the hotel restaurant every night. The setting is grand and service professional. The quality of the food is very good. It is fine dining but not too ostentatious. The cocktails are better value than the wine. We liked the Tico sour. We ordered coffee at the end of each of our 3 meals and every time it was served differently. Once as a cup of watery filter, another in a plunger (again with little flavour) and the best by a mile was the coffee made using the proper pressure coffee machine. It should be made this way every time! No point in having good ingredients if you don't extract the flavour.

All in all a very nice hotel.

This was the last night of our trip to Costa Rica and it was fabulous. Lovely colonial building, beautiful rooms, fantastic food and service. The rooms were perfect, comfortable beds, air conditioning, small private patio and fountain to relax in. I really cannot fault it.

Room Tip: Choose one with a patio
