“Beautiful views but property needs updating and some TLC.”
Reviewed June 19, 2017 for a stay in May 2017

-The view is beautiful and relaxing.
- I love the big dining table facing the view of the mountains and the sea.
-House is old but its okay and the picture here needs to be updated since the house is not white but a teal.
-Beds were comfortable but the sheets were not the best, the comforter were not breathable and too heavy.
-Only master bedroom gets a view.
-Towels needs to be changed or better yet bring your own towels which I luckily did.
-The fan in the kitchen needs to be cleaned as when you turn it on it smells like grease. The utensils and pots/pans are old, it seems like you have to bring everything that you need in a kitchen because they didnt stock up the kitchen stuff. we have to buy trash bags and a peeler too because there were none. Knives were dull. Imagine my frustrations when cooking. Good thing Safeway was 15 minutes away.
- Place is clean but seemed stuffy in the other 3 bedrooms since they were dark. One room had 2 vanities and just made the room tight.
-Hot water heater is gone after 2 people showered.
-The house could use a new couch as you get buried deep when seating and would have a hard time getting up and out of the couch.
-Some of the furniture like floor lamp, one vanity upstairs, bookshelf, table by the hallway can go to create more space in the house.

“Fantastic views!”
Reviewed July 20, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

Very nice 4 bedroom house with open field in the backyard looking out across the bay and the mountains. Very relaxing to sit on the deck and just look at the scenery. The owner and her daughter own a bakery business and even left us muffins one morning

“What makes this rental a 4 is the view”

This rental property could be really lovely with some TLC and regular maintenance. What makes it nice is the view and the two decks out back towards the bay. The other good things include lots of board games to play, recycling available (except for paper), and only 4.7 miles from town. Kitchen is equipped okay. However, I do need to provide some caveats: First, the house needs maintenance. The decks are drying out and splintering slightly, particularly the lower deck facing the bay (don't walk barefoot on it!). The upstairs shower had a problem with the (40 year old) faucet for the hot water, so the upstairs shower could not be used for 2 days - we had to take cold showers upstairs, use the bathtub or the downstairs shower (a problem if you have several guests upstairs). When the water went out one day, we had to wait several hours for a plumber. The bath upstairs appears to be a Jacuzzi tub, but it doesn't work. The kitchen sink had a faucet for hot (or purified?) water with a sign on it saying "out of order." The upstairs bedrooms had dated furniture (some scratched up). Some of the bedspreads are also dated and worn. Only bedroom #1 has a beautiful view. Two of the other bedrooms and windows face the street. Bedroom #2 had curtain rods that were falling off the wall and a rear deck that really wasn't usable (deck old, chairs dirty, key stuck in the door lock from outside, and it faced the street). There are few actual closets, so there are more open areas to hang your clothes. There were not enough towel hooks near the shower for more than few guests, so I had to go out and buy some hooks. The washer is hard to work as the door to it doesn't close well. The house wasn't super clean; there are several lovely framed pictures in the rental, but all had a good coat of dust on them. The upstairs carpet is outdated and stained; it needs to be steam-cleaned or replaced. The outside grill was still dirty from a prior guest and it was hard to get all the burners turned on. One of the couches downstairs corner seemed to have been previously used by a dog, which is a problem if you have allergies Internet was a little slow. The location wasn't as private as I was told/expected. There is a smaller house/garage in back sharing the property - it appears to house the owner and appears to be some sort of business out there (but they did not bother us). There are some neighbors around - one of whom used a loud lawnmower for 1-2 hours during our stay.

Last, the pictures on the website and on trip advisor are outdated. The house is blue, not white; the table in the pic "view from the deck" isn't at the house (there's a different patio table for 6 instead); room #2 is a very dark blue (makes the room really dark) and has curtains (with rod falling down) not blinds; there is no loveseat in room #1; the table in the dining room is different - longer and very nice, with two benches, not chairs; and we did see a moose, but not one sandhill crane and we were there 8 days in June (although that may depend on the season).

Hopefully the owner will fix some of these things so that the rating can move up to a 5 in the future. I would still recommend staying there, mainly for the view and proximity to Homer, but just be prepared for some inconveniences. I have to say that the owner was very responsive to our requests and overtures to make a reservation. More so than other houses we looked at renting.

“Exactly as described. A fantastic place to relax with family and enjoy Homer!”
Reviewed July 31, 2011 for a stay in July 2011

If you want to know about the property - head to the website. www.alaskabythesea.com The description is exactly how we found it. Lots of space inside where we met up with family and our family of 7 still had room ! A large yard that the kids could run around in and sometimes spot a ring neck pheasant or cranes. The view is FANTASTIC !
Wouldn't hesitate to stay again if we are fortunate to make it to Homer again !
