Another one of our stop-overs on the eastern cape road trip was to 39 on Church.
A beautiful well kept bed and breakfast. The aircon wasn't working in our room and at first the trainee receptionist offered us a fan. This however didnt do anything for the extreme heat in Dec and a young very efficient manager came on site and quickly did damage control by moving us to another room. The breakfast the next morning was simply divine .The garden and pool were well kept and clean. The only annoyance were the guests in the room next to us that had no consideration for other guests as they spoke out at the top of their voices and drank the night away on the open plan terrace.

Definitely not worth the 4 star status. We were told the core staff was on leave as a result we would only get cold breakfast on 1st January, which was understandable. What was unacceptable however was lack of cleaning service, no change of linen, no fresh towels, even the trash wasn't taken out. That is unacceptable even in 3 start establishments. There were just two people working in the fully booked establishment, an elderly lady at reception and one lady assisting with breakfast and cleaning, both not dressed appropriately for a 4 star establishment.

The one room didn't have an air-conditioning remote control and the TV had no signal.

Stayed here as solo traveller in a travel group. Had small and rather dark room, but comfortable. Only chair to sit in was a wooden hardback chair in small area by cupboards. Breakfast was good but Service slow and rather uncoordinated. The young man was polite and friendly and certainly could be really good, but should be shown how to get his act together. Nothing really to write home about, but then nothing really negative either. Would avoid room 9 (see above).

The reason for my stay was due to convenience, as a conference I was attending, was being held at this venue.
When I emailed regarding the booking I was greeted with short one liners and got the feeling the person on the other end was either very busy or in a foul mood.
When we arrived, my booking had been made for the incorrect evening. Luckily we were the only people staying there (or not).
The bedroom was neat, clean with nice furnishings, however with no even one window in the room, we had to sleep with the aircon on, which is horrid.
The bathroom was clean and had good amenities, however the shower needs updating and a new shower head: it felt like being pelted with marshmallows instead of a shower.
We asked to have breakfast at 08.00, we were greeted by the same person who dealt with our booking the previous evening. Serving guests in a plastic apron. (4star?)
We were given convenience served muffins, yoghurt and fruit salad. Then we were served a full breakfast of bacon, eggs, tomatoe and 3 mushrooms.
The bacon was poor quality and undercooked.
We waited for 10 minutes for toast, by which time everything else was cold.
The coffee was vile.
The conference was on that morning, and the conference room was freezing cold after three requests it was eventually corrected.
The same vile coffee was served with tea during our break, with shop bought swiss rolls and muffins.
After the break the conference was interrupted several times to clear the serving area.

It's hard to know whether to recommend this guest house or not. If you can ignore the surliness of the proprietor and the state of the swimming pool, it's good value.

We arrived off a flight from Jo'burg and got here (conveniently close to the airport) at around 13.00. Friends were already staying here and it had been booked by another friend, based in Port Elizabeth. Our arrival time had been known; yet there was no-one around when we arrived and it was locked up. After a call to our PE-based friend and a 45-minute wait the owner turned up. We received no apology nor explanation for her absence. This rudeness and lack of any sense of customer service continued: eg: there was no key for our room safe, our request for one was greeted with a sigh and we never got one, even though we stayed for 2 nights. We had to put our valuables in the safe in a room being occupied by a friend.

The kitchen staff were at least friendly but seemed a little lost as to what to do. Our first breakfast was excellent. The second one barely existed, presumably because the number of guests had dwindled from 7 to 4.

Our room was large, clean and had everything we wanted (apart from a usesable safe).

The swimming pool water was saline (as many are in South Africa), which is much preferable to chlorine, but was not very clean. The tiles around the pool were dangerously slippy when wet. The loungers were stacked, rusting, behind the pool hut.
