My wife and I chose to stay at this lodge after spending 2 months in the bush traveling Southern Africa.
We chose this place as it was advertised as a luxury self catering and spa on other other search tools.
Upon our arrival through the gate we had a serious wow! The grounds were as immaculate as the photos. Impressed! Ok ...lets check in. The young lady at reception was brilliant with an awesome personality. She escorted us to our self catering unit past the cleaning staff that was lounging around in front of the rooms reading newspaper and socializing on their break. This was the 1st bad impression for us. Next we get to our room expecting luxury self catering. One step inside revealed this was less than luxury, just average. The TV was an old CRT that was well beyond its serviceable period.
The young lady noted our disappointed and quickly suggested an upgrade to the Room known as Barry's. We accepted this room with an upgraded price as well.
We had to request the correct cooking utensils to be brought to the room as we prefer to prepare our own meals meals as much as practical.
The place is advertised as wifi available in the rooms. This wifi requires the purchase of airtime coupons from a 3rd party provider "Älways On". The airtime value is quite good for value,however there was insufficient signal in our room when we were assured we would be fine. We were looking forward to catching up on communications etc after being in the bush for so long so I had to now purchase more prepaid airtime and use my cell data. So this was not as advertised. The secon pool area that Barry's room is adjacent was in poor condition it had not been maintained for some time. I explained that my wife and i would very much prefer to have that pool available rather than walk to the front of the premises to the pool that was postcard perfect. It is beyond my why they choose not to maintain the second pool until a guest makes a request.
Next, dinner available upon request We chose to have dinner in the restaurant as it was the first night there after traveling from Botswana that day. It was explained to us that the chef would be in at 7pm and would contact for the menu options. 7:25 and we are famished. We contacted reception and they put the chef on the phone and he rattle off the menu and asked for a selection over the phone. I had a hard time hearing him and understanding him so we walked over to the reception area to speak with him. Once again he rattled off the options and still could not understand everything he said so I asked for a menu. He returned with 2 tattered computer printed pages with the options. We made our selection then went to sit in the restaurant area and quickly went back out the main reception area to sit and wait for our meal as the dining area had as much personality as school cafeteria with a bunch of tables jammed in. We also asked the chef for a wine menu and he looked puzzled and told us to ask the girl at reception. She had to go outside into the bar area next door see what was available. Nothing much so we ended up bringing our own from our room.The quality of the meal was as would be expected from frozen veggies. It is evident that this dining room does not serve very many meals.
The bathroom shower< I would have expected a nice shower head for a place that was advertised as luxury self catering rather than the cheapest available shower head.
Laundry service was another adventure. We called reception first thing in the morning to let them know we had laundry. They said no problem and said it should be no problem to have the laundry done and returned before the end of the day. We called at the end of the day to find out the laundry attendant had already left for the day and someone would retrieve our laundry for us and bring it to our room. As it turns out the laundry was left to late in the day it did not have time to dry and they brought our laundry to us very damp.
Check out time was delayed because the receptionist did not show up and the chef did not know how to settle the account correctly. We had to wait for another girl to arrive to settle everything.
The owner of the lodge arrived as we were waiting to check an we explained some of the issues we had and she was very polite and apologetic, but not really phased by all of this. She has a lovely property with so much potential and she appears to be very much out of touch with what is going on with her staff. This review speaks to self catering rooms not the hotel rooms. They seem to have very good reviews on other forums.
