Michelangelo Hotel
Ranked #3 of 47 Hotels in Sandton
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 20 November 2017 via mobile

The Michelangelo has a dominant location in Sandton, bordering and forming one side of Nelson Mandela Square. I stayed at this hotel twice and over the years had a large number of business breakfasts and lunches in the lounge and dining area. The rooms are of a high standard, the common areas are well appointed and maintained and the service is of a high standard. There are many newer and more “modern” hotels in Sandton, but this is a classic and one of the original Sandton hubs. Recommended.

In October we spent 2 nights at the Michelangelo. This trip we stayed at 4 different places and this was by far my wife's favorite. We liked the building and décor, we liked the room and everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast is very good. They have a well stocked buffet, and they have a nice menu to order off too. We enjoyed the pool (very warm) sauna and steam. Their spa treatments were priced very reasonable. Wish we could have tired the hotel restaurant, but very close by are 2 fantastic steak houses. We enjoy both. The Michelangelo is in a good location for Johannesburg and it is connect to a large mall. Have to say prices are high in the mall.
.........Now the bad; When I was checking out at the main desk, my wife was by the main entrance with the porter and our luggage. (The desk is one floor up from the main entrance). Someone grabbed my camera bag off the luggage cart and took off. My wife followed the person into a vehicle. The porter then came to the rescue and did get my camera bag back.
Even before that happened we did not like Johannesburg. Very crime ridden and tourists are a big target. Its a city that you can not go out and explore by yourself. Even as a couple we could not go out. Have to be in a big group. Advised not to use cabs or Uber because of crimes against you. Not that much for tourists to do there anyway, especially compared with the rest of South Africa. We are coming back to South Africa, just going to skip Johannesburg. But if you must come we would recommend the Michelangelo.

I stayed here for 12 nights on a business trip. Happy to say that it was a privilege to stay at this hotel. The hotel staff were excellent. Very friendly and accommodating. The quality of the food was very good, breakfast was always punctual and well done. The hotel is in an excellent location too. Nearby shops and restaurants mean you don't need to venture too far. A special thanks to Jacqueline Gordon for her professionalism, politeness and help during the course of my stay. I will be back here again in August 2018 for my next business trip. Looking forward to it already!

We recently stayed two nights here after flying direct from New York. The location in Sandton is excellent. It is right in Nelson Mandela Square with many options for dining and shopping. There is a very nice high end shopping mall attached to the hotel so anything you need is right there. The hotel staff are what made our stay. The bell staff, concierge, bartenders and housekeepers were all overwhelmingly warm and friendly. It made our stay completely enjoyable. We stayed in a King Deluxe room which was very spacious and had a nice view of the square. The included breakfast was very nice as well. The hotel itself is very nice but is starting to be a bit outdated. It will need some updating soon but it did not detract from the excellent customer service we received. We would stay here again. There is a spas and indoor pool but we did not use either. Recommend eating at the Butcher Shop which is attached to the hotel. It was an amazing meal.

I walked from the Gautrain and it's easy to find. Friendly welcome and professional check-in. Rooms are luxurious and well set up for business travellers. Very well-laid out bathroom. I found the wi-fi difficult to set up and slow.
