When in Johannesburg, I have always stayed at this Hotel. The staff and room quality are excellent.

The Sandton Sun also backs onto a mall which is fantastic for shopping and quite a few restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Room Tip: Book early !

This hotel is aged but still provides the essential facilities - good connection to traffic (Gautrain to airport) and shopping mall with lots of restaurants. You could do so without walking out of the open. Actually there is a link bridge for you to walk with safety even in the night time after dinner. This might be a great advantage to me as security is my prime concern when there were crime cases (including kidnapping) on the streets of South Africa.

You may join the day-tour through the concierge and its Head Manager is a very nice and experienced man. With his assistance, we hired a mini-van with a tour guide/driver. We are also offered the best rate for the two-day enjoyable trip.

One of the worth-mentioned sightseeing point is Rhino & Lion Park. We did so on a Wednesday to match the feeding time at 1 pm. Our friends were felt exciting when we saw the real encounters of lions, cheetahs & wild dogs. With a little extra charge of R30, you could also play with the cubs and take photos with them. I probably leave more time on the next visit so as to explore the Wondercave near to the Reserve.

Room Tip: The 6th Floor restaurant/bar opens till 11 pm at night. You may feel noisy if the rooms are on the...

Dear Augustbee,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on Trip Advisor.

We pride ourselves in the fact that we boast a "all under one roof" experience. You are quite right - in that without any transport and without going outside - you can experience the hotel, the new Sandton Shopping Centre, Nelson Mandela Square and can even reach the Gautrain. There is just so much to do and no transport required.

Thank you for your feedback regarding Ronnie - he is one of our superstars.

Hope we will see you soon again,
Kind Regards
Andrew Davidson

It's a Johannesburg landmark and its superlative location within the sprawling - but pretty impressive - Sandton City shopping precinct make this tough to beat. With a safe walk into some of the best shops and restaurants of Johannesburg, its a winner for tourists with no transport. But, it is a little dated and just seems to have lost its edge. Rooms vary. I was offered a room with lighting that did not work making for a very dingy evening of work. So, I changed to the room next door with a different configuration and bright lights - what a pleasure compared to my original room. Some rooms are simply too large for the bed making them cold and uninviting. The atrium lobby has been re-fashioned but the buffet restaurant which I always enjoyed is gone. The cavernous lobby, if empty, can actually be rather depressing despite its glitzy facade. THis hotel is worth of its 5-star grading and guests will not be disappointed - so long as they don't overpay and secure a good room rate or deal. Finally, the hotel is not near the Gautrain station so you need to take a taxi...and it should not cost you more than R50 for the privilege so watch out!

Room Tip: Ask to see two rooms to compare!

Dear Polanalyst,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on Trip Advisor - appreciated.

Apologies for the lighting in the first room - but good to hear that the second room met with your expectations and was convenient for your work situation.

You can access the Gautrain station from the hotel - albeit via the various passages and shopping malls. The Gautrain is adjacent to the Nelson Mandela shopping centre and Sandton Sun is linked to that shopping centre via the sky bridge.

Also we have just started a complimentary shuttle to the Gautrain on request - pick up or drop off - so no need to pay the Taxi driver anymore - just let us know when you make your next reservation (arrival details) and we will come fetch you.

Keep well,
Kind Regards
Andrew Davidson

Just checked out after a stay of 3 nights for a conference. The location is great and close to the biggest shopping mall in Africa, Mandela square and endless dining options. The reception and common areas are great and the outdoor deck very busy for pre dinner drinks. The rooms are a bit tired and dated especially the bathrooms. I had a misrable view over an empty parking lot. But the room was constantly being cleaned and the bed was very comfortable. Staff very helpful and polite all through. Free Internet everywhere is also a major plus. Business center was excellent. Overall NOT the laps of luxury but an excellent business hotel and good value.

Dear Ahmadsameh,

Thank you for taking the time to post a comment on Trip Advisor - really appreciated.
Thank you for your postive feedback regarding your recent conference - good to hear and I will pass onto the team. The bathrooms are being put forward for refurbishment in 2012 - I hope they will be approved - your comments will help with our motivation. Keep well and I hope to see you soon again, not neccessarily for a conference, maybe just for some relaxation. Kind Regards, Andrew Davidson, General Manager

Stayed at this hotel in late August 2011. First impression on entering the lobby was good. From there it went downhill unfortunately. We were ushered to Guest Services to check in rather than checking in at the reception area. Thought that was nice until we arrived at Guest Services. The attention from the staff at Guest Services was off handed, aloof and poor. We were given a room on the top floor. My advice is not to accept any room on this level. It was horrible, old, dirty and noisy. All of the furniture was chipped and scratched, the wall lights were all crooked, the standard lamp was actually broken with the shade wobbling and hanging loose. The carpet stained and dirty The desk lamp had no globe in it. The bathroom matched the rest of the room and the bed was as soft as a morgue slab. We complained and requested another room. To the hotel's credit they responded quickly and gave us another room on a different level. That room had been refurbished (somewhat) and was a great improvement on the first one. Question has to be why they would put anyone in the other hell hole. Clearly there is a problem with their quality control but I suspect that they try to place tourists in the crappy rooms because they are less concerned with repeat business levels from tourists. I have told my agent to ensure that he does not put anyone at this hotel and have asked him to share that information with the whole of the franchised network accross Australia. The meals were good although expensive and the service from the general bar, restaraunt, lobby and reception staff was excellent. Only complaint with the staff is constant hovering for a tip but that is South Africa and not something that Australians generally are good with. My advice is to look around the Sandton area. There is a vast choice of hotels and my enquiries with other people that I met in the area suggest that many are better than this one.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, insist on a refurbished room and get the date it was refurbished because it h...

Dear Mr Greg L - Thank you for taking the time to post your review on TripAdvisor - it's truly appreciated and put to good use. With regards to your feedback - I am surprised & sorry to hear of your unfortunate check in process at in our Business Suites. The Business Suite check in - is for our VIP guests - but obviously we have dropped the ball and will rectify with the relevant check in person. We usually get great reviews from our team in the business suites. With regards to the intial room allocated - yes - the hotel was refurbed in 2 separate years - and thus the top 3 floors are decorated differently to the balance - but we don't treat them any different or class them as inferior - so there should be no difference in service or quality of the room. Sorry if this was the impression given - as it definately not intended. Thank you for the positive feedback regarding the rest of the hotel bar your check in & initial room - great to hear we created some great memories and that the team was quick to respond to your needs. Regards, Andrew Davidson, General Manager

Have stayed at this hotel for over 15 years when in Johannesburg on business. Rooms have been upgraded over time, but not the bathrooms, and it is generally getting tired in parts although there has been a lot of improvement to the common parts; lounge, bar and restaurants. Key cards are a real pain; you need them to operate the lift and they often get de-magnetised with mobile phones etc which is a real pain when you can't get into your room and have to return to reception for a new key card. Time to find a new hotel in Johannesburg.

Dear Grant R - Thank you very much for taking the time to post your review on TripAdvisor. You are quite correct regarding the various refurbs. The good news is that the bathrooms are hopefully going to be actioned in 2012 - subject to financial review - but you are correct in saying that they now stand out compared to the rest of the property. But we will motivate accordingly and push to get them done. With regard to the key card system - we have upgraded the system to cover the lifts to ensure our guest safety whilst in the hotel. The current system now prevents non guests from gaining access to our room floors - and we feel this is important to ensure our guests security. Unfortunately if you do keep the key card near your phone - then yes it does mess with the coding and fails. Sorry about this, but this this would happen with any hotel key card system. Thank you for your balanced feedback - we do value all feedback as it goes a long way to helping us to improve our standards. Keep well and I do hope we will see you soon again. Kind Regards Andrew Davidson, General Manager

Me & my partner stayed here for 3 nights, and I have to comment mainly on the room since we didn't eat or went to any facilities there. The room was clean & huge, with simple designs that were very pleasing. The bed quality was good, and there were a variety of channels to choose from in the TV.

The only problem we had in our room was the shower water. As much as I maxed the water to hot, the water just felt like normal temperature.

The hotel's location was also convenient. The hotel is just a few minutes walk to Sandton City & Nelson Mandela Square, and it's only about a 10-minute walk from the hotel to the Gautrain Station (the fastest way to get to the airport).

Overall, I definitely recommend this to everyone for its location and room quality.
