The Umhlanga branch is just dismal. Just a few tables if you are eating in..very dirty. Curry tastes like it's mass produced and the roti is like paper. This used to be a great restaurant but it's sad to see it's passed it's prime.

The meals we had were delicious. My partner who left Durban many years ago was keen for chicken Biriyani.. we had it and it was delicious as was the prawns and tandoori platter we had. Very well priced and efficient friendly staff. We paid NZ $45 For meals and drinks for 5 adults..and I can recommend the kheer

Tour guides took us here for lunch inside the prior train station. Food was excellent and just exactly the curry meal experience we hoped for while in Durban. We both had curry chicken dishes.
Service was okay. Atmosphere was noisy and a bit crowded. Very glad they took us there.

This was a first time visit to Oriental Restaurant at The Workshop.
For those who haven't visited this place it's off the main ground level open space and below all the banks on the 1st floor.
Kevin and I ate at take away section of the restaurant.
This restaurant has been highly recommended as a GREAT Curry spot for ages but had never taken the opportunity until now.
The waiters are very enthusiastic and are determined to seat you as you enter the arcade.
I ordered a small portion of Mutton Curry with Roti and Kevin a Mutton Bunny, both on the bone.
10 minutes later our food arrived on 2 large plates.
The Roti covered the entire plate and was freshly made that day.
The Mutton, ģravy and potatoes were absolutely magnificent, with the mutton so tender a day flavourful. The gravy thick, sticky and medium hot.
The customary carrot salad laced with green chillies was OK.
Kevin's bunny he proclaimed an absolute triumph of a lunch and as he had eaten there many times agreed it was as good as he had always remembered.
Kev ate with his hands and made it look so simple but was amused that I ate mine with "spanners".
I can't wait to return to try out the chicken curry next week.
Thanks chefs... keep up the good work.

After having not visited The Oriental Kitchen situated at The Workshop Shopping Centre in central Durban for many years, I frequented the restaurant for a quick lunch. The mutton breyani was absolutely awful since the pieces of mutton were cheap, bony chunks with hardly any meat on them. The pieces were as tough as eating tennis balls. The rice mixture was poorly spiced and resembled nothing like a breyani at all. I would never serve this meal to guests. What was rather astounding, was the indignant and unapologetic response by the 'manager' at the till. Unfortunately, this is the last time I would ever visit this so called 'restaurant'. In addition to this, the waiter accused us of taking his cheap, nasty ballpoint pen! As we left the table to pay at the counter, one of the restaurant cleaners cleared the table. There are many super Indian restaurants in and around Durban. Do yourself a favour and support them.
