“The Perfect Base for Kruger, Sabi Sands and Blyde Canyon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 December 2011

Phil & Margi were the perfect hosts; the room was large, beautifully designed, scrupulously clean, well-equipped and extremely comfortable. The location - just minutes from the Kruger National Park and a short drive from the Blyde River Canyon - was perfect for our needs. Would highly recommend to anyone wishing to combine wildlife watching in the Kruger Park and Sabi Sands Game Reserve with local sightseeing - so much better, more comfortable and luxurious, than staying within the Kruger Park. Also, I suspect, fewer mosquitos - although we were here at what was supposed to be peak mosquito time, we weren't bothered by them at all at Blue Jay Lodge.

We started our 3 week long trip in South Africa with 3 nights at Blue Jay Lodge. We were greeted by Phil and Margi when we arrived and offered drinks and great advice on our itinerary in the Hazyview area. I didn't realize how important this was until we arrived at other guest lodges in South Africa and were not greeted by the owners who could tell us where to go for dinner and make suggestions on things to do in the area.
The rooms are fantastic. We booked the self catering suite (but still had breakfast with Phil and Margi each morning). The room was huge and very nicely decorated. The bed was extremely comfortable - and hard to get out of in the morning.
There is a lot to do in the area with a Kruger park entrance only 10Km away, Elephant Whispers (highly recommended) and Blyde River Canyon viewpoints and hikes 30Km away.

I stayed here two nights and my stay was too short. Phil and Margi are great hosts, welcoming us with drinks on their patio. They have plenty of stories to share, and also provide great tips on things to do in the area. Their home and rooms are amazing - beautifully built and incredibly comfortable.

We stayed here for two nights before going on to Kruger park and loved it - the lodge is in a beautiful leafy setting which feels hidden away. The owners couldn't have been friendlier, sitting with us for welcome drinks on their deck and giving us lots of recommendations and useful tips for the rest of our trip. We had 4 friends arrive the following night and Phil and Margi were happy for us to take the place over! The rooms were just gorgeous, with traditional high thatched roofs, four poster beds, beautiful netting and open bathrooms - very romantic. The pool is perhaps a little small but good for cooling off after a hot day on safari. Phil arranged our last-minute trip to the elephant sanctuary with no problem and continued to help us even when we moved to another hotel. The breakfasts were yummy too. We'd definitely recommend staying here and just wish ours had been for longer.

I'm writing this review as I am sitting by the Blue Jay Pool on almoast the last day of our stay.
Me and my wife are staying here for the fifth time , and once again we are staying in a room called Paradise ; a name this room deserves !
Rightly so have the rooms at Blue Jay been named in Tripadvisor as the best rooms you will find
in Hazyview ,or for that matter anywhere else in SA.
I have stated this on several occasions before on TripAdvisor , and I will name all advantages that pop up in my head once again.
Very spacious rooms , shower with big showerhead ( with a newly installed waterheater ),very wide bath , separate toilet ,tv with movie channels( soon to be replaced by flatscreens ! ),a big bed with
a topclass mattress and very fine linen ,very silent airconditioning and a separate fan ,if you don't like aircos .
Rooms are cleaned spotlessly on a daily basis .
The 4 star B&B ( I think it should be 5 star ) is located very near to the Phabeni Gate ; it takes about ten minutes to get there !
There is a wireless connection for all computerlovers ( a proper connection ,not a snaillike one ).
For eating out you can go to various restaurants in the immediate surroundings ; all nearby !
Breakfasts at this lodge are with a wide variety of fruit ,slices of meat ,cheeses (french and domestic ),yoghurt, croissants ,other breads as well , and ofcourse your eggs in any form you order , handled by the owners themselves .
Philip and Margi will go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
They are lovely hostst with a great sense of humor I might add !
So if you are looking for a tranquil and very safe environment with 5 star value rooms go to Blue Jay !
Oh ,and be sure not to miss the Happy Hour on the veranda of the main house ….
We'll be back within 6 months .
Thank you very much Philip and Margi !

Room Tip: All the rooms are about the same , also selfcatering available .

Blue Jay is a lovely place to stay. The rooms (we stayed in King bed rooms) are stunning and incredibly clean and comfortable. There is a lovely friendly atmosphere with guests spending time with the owners for sundown drinks, we even found ourselves watching rugby in the house! Breakfasts were fantastic. Highly recommended.

We stayed here after 4 days at Marloth Park and 4 days in Kruger. It was really lovely to stay in a place where Phil and Margy were so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The rooms are quite superb, the self catering was occupied by my sons and it was excellent all the facilities were great. The attention to details was brilliant. Mal and I stayed in the superb rooms with 4 poster bed and a wonderful bath and shower. We overlooked the garden and the bird watching was grea tThe breakfast was freshly cooked and anything you wanted from Fresh Juice and Fruit right through to Bacon and Egg and all the trimmings. Heaven!! I would highly recommend anyone looking for a bit of luxury and comfort to stay here, we would definately go back.
