We were married here on 3rd April and it was a truly amazing day.

The hotel is fabulously "Old World" and "Colonial" with a superb setting, impeccable service, fantastic food and wonderful staff/facilities. The Afternoon Tea was truly wonderful, and even upon returning 3 days after checking out, the staff still remembered our names!!

I would not hesitate in recommending this hotel and its restaurants, spa and Afternoon Tea to one and all.

I adored staying here. It was comfortably luxurious without the bling factor that mars so many of today's five-star hotels. Service was warm and friendly. Facilities were great, although again in a very understated, old-fashioned way (the hair salon made me think fondly of my dead gran). Lush grounds, gorgeous high tea, deliciously soft and crisp beds to fall into after a day out sight-seeing. Life in South Africa is tough for many, so you may feel a little guilty enjoying this level of luxury and comfort during your stay. I told myself that I was supporting the local economy and allowed myself to enjoy the warmest of hospitality imaginable in a large hotel. This is a special place.

Room Tip: All the rooms are lovely, but a room in the original building with view of the lush gardens (regular...

How many hotels have old-worlde gardens and are located just on the premieter of the city? Plus there is a truly magnificent swimming pool. And then understated, impeccable service - you're taken care of by true professionals that make you feel at home. You would not expect it, but children are given special attention and made most welcome too.

Room Tip: Being a little inland there are no sea views, so ask for mountain views. Ask for a nice garden view.

This is a grand old Colonial masterpiece, with all the mod cons. Lovely rooms, gorgeous grounds, underneath Table Mountain. We stayed in one of the cottage suites, that was just divine. White picket fence garden leading to adult pool and a bit of Table Mountain viewed from the garden, which is so special. Lovely main pool too with green grass and loungers for the family. This is, surprisingly, also a very friendly family hotel. My grandchild loved it, and the staff are so friendly. I could easily move in. They have a marvelous afternoon tea on the patio and lounge. Book, it can be busy. This is one of those special hotels that has moved with the times. I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: You can have a variety of rooms. I have stayed in the main hotel, but adored the cottages on the sid...

We just popped in for coffee, on the terrace, on our last morning in South Africa! The coffee was served in bone china and we enjoyed the best part of 4 cups for R40 (£3.50) which represented better value than most! We had the bonus of the magnificent gardens to admire!

We have just returned in March 2012 from a two week vacation at the Mount Nelson Hotel. For the past 8 years this has been our hotel of choice when visiting Cape Town and as far as we are concerned it just gets better and better!

We use the hotel car to collect us from the International Airport and the service is very efficient, with cold towels and bottled water provided to refresh the passengers in the heat. On arriving at the hotel we are always greeted so warmly with many of the staff recognising us from previous visits. Check In is always speedy and efficient, again with refreshments being offered and special thanks to Patrick for taking such good care of us. We were shown to a fabulous room which had just undergone a recent renovation to a very high standard. The room was large, bright and spacious and overlooked the gardens. It had a state of the art television and dvd. The bathroom was huge and the bed was so comfy! This was to be our home for two weeks and we knew that we would be so happy and comfortable there.

The grounds of this hotel are splendid and the gardeners take such pride and pleasure in their work. The grounds really are a special feature and differentiates the Mount Nelson from other 5 Star hotels in Cape Town.

Breakfast at Oasis on the patio overlooking the gardens and pool is just wonderful and all the staff are so friendly and efficient. It really is a great way to start the day. Afternoon Tea is a must and this is very popular indeed. The choice of sweet and savoury foods is excellent and tea served by Sidney is always an informative experience.

The hotel has two swimming pools and so many sun loungers and parasols. The pools are kept in pristine condition and the pool attendants are so attentive. Plenty of room in the gardens by the pool for guests who require lots of sun/shade or peace and quiet.

The Planet Restaurant is truly marvellous. Over the years we have dined in many restaurants in Cape Town but this year we dined there so many times as when the the food and service are that good it really is hard to leave the hotel (please see separate review on Planet Restaurant.)
We found the Concierge Service to be informative and useful and special thanks to Byron for his assistance.

To all the staff, thank you so much for making our stay at the hotel such a memorable one and we are already planning our next visit to this wonderful hotel steeped in so much history.

This hotel has iconic status in Cape Town and we were not disappointed with our brief stay there. Our room was in the Oasis Wing. This is quite a long way from the reception area and two lifts were needed to get there. But our room was beautifully furnished, very traditional with a huge bed, small balcony and big bathroom. It was peaceful with pretty views of the garden. Hard to believe we were in the heart of the city.
The staff were very friendly and courteous. Breakfast was excellent and the poached eggs cooked to perfection.
Once a month wine and food pairing dinners are held in the main restaurant. The idea is to link terroir with cuisine. On this occasion it was the wines of Durbaville (11 of them!) with 7 courses. Wine makers and the chef talked us through the experience.
Excellent value and an experience to be recommended.
