This restaurant is located in the large Mall in Cape Town. It was easiest to get an Uber here. We were able to get seating at the sushi bar for two right away even though the place was super super busy. Our waitress was impressively fast and friendly considering how many people she was taking care of.

The Sushi rolls were very large individual pieces, making it a bit hard to eat, and the proportion of rice to fish was a bit too much rice for my taste. All the standard flavors were represented, though I would've wished for some more creative combinations other than the usual salmon, tuna, avo, cucumber situation. The portions are also very large, so two per person are plenty!

A great place for Sushi and seafood. You have to queue for a while but, the plus on this you get a chance for a free wine tasting of the wines of the day while queueing. Great service our waitress was really friendly and knowledgeable of the whole menu. I had the baby sole perfectly cooked any partner had the sushi, all washed down with a bottle of wine from the great selection from the wine list. The only down side is that its in the middle of a shopping centre. But we quite enjoy this as while your eating you can watch the world go by. Great people watching. A real must if you love you seafood and sushi and want that nice easy laid back friendly service.

I have enjoyed going to Willoughby’s at the waterfront in Cape Town since Sammy first introduced sushi over 20 years ago. The shop was much smaller then, a hole in the wall really but the sushi was exciting and new. Sammy, the head sushi chef, has taken Willoughby & Co to where it was up until recently, one for the very best sushi and Asian, fusion, Japanese restaurants in South Africa.
The owner has enjoyed a packed restaurant with a loyal clientele for years. The prices at Willoughby & Co have become extremely high and I am confident that the owner is enjoying the fruits of his labour and Sammy’s creativity.
A sushi roll (rainbow reloaded) can be upward of R170 for 8 pieces. The average meal for 2 with wine and three sushi dishes can easily cost you between R800- R1000. I am willing to pay top prices for food that is worth it. I have always been an avid supported of Willoughby & Co and have promoted them often when “Out of Towner’s” (not in the know) ask me for my top restaurant recommendations.
Any restaurant can have a bad night and I am willing to accept that but on the last three occasions the food has been well below what I find acceptable, especially at the current prices. The sushi no longer tastes special it has the same consistency as buying pre made sushi in a grocery store. The art form is gone; the sushi is on the too warm side and the rice has become to soft. I have had to ask for extra-reloaded sauce on 2 occasions of late, even the mayo is hard to find (see pic on web page) The sauce on the rock shrimp tempura is mixed in front of you with no regard for measurement or consistency. According to Willoughby & Co’s manager, the sauce should be pre made. You can’t wing it with a squirt of mayonnaise and sweet chilli into a s/s container in front of patrons that one day tastes like it should and then totally different the next. I did not see Sammy there last night not the owner. I see many new faces behind the sushi bar. I hope that things return to the high standard we have all grown to love at Willoughby’s & Co it would be a great shame to see this once top restaurant become just another rip off sushi bar.

This restaurant does not take reservations, but it is well worth lining up if necessary. You can taste wine while you wait. The menu is extensive with a separate choice of either Asian or European. The Asian menu is highly recommended and in my view, some of the best sushi/sashimi in Cape Town to have. Wine choice is exceptional. Service is exceptional. Casual dining coupled with top quality food makes this place a winner.
