I came to this hotel late at night for a one night stay for business.

I think it is 5 star? The reception were friendly. The room was lovely. Dilmah tea with little milks. My favourite.

Wine with biltong. Lovely little touches.

Breakfast is where the title of difficult to judge came in. The entrance hall / breakfast room. It looked a little like the tables weren't fully set. The room didn't flow nicely from breakfast display to seating. The staff were not very welcoming - very busy setting tables rather than serving.

I was fed, watered and slept well, just not sure it was 5 star?

We had "The Coach House" which, as it would sound, is a suite conversion from the hundreds years old coach house. A very spacious suite with super high straw thatched and exposed beam ceilings, a dressing room, and a massive bathroom with heated floors, double vanity and the hottest most epic rain head shower. Other inroom amenities - like complimentary local wine and truffles, a coffee/tea service, and plus robes made our winter evenings cozy. The bed was incredibly comfortable too which is always important.

The rest of the grounds are beautiful. Back off of the main drag of Paarl, insulated by vineyards as far as the eye can see made you feel removed from the world (and certainly felt more European than I had expected!) and yet we walked to dinner in town a few times and it was a casual easy stroll. Its proximity to both the airport and to Cape Town CBD made this a great basecamp location too, without the stress of being in a city or dealing with urban parking/city life.

Service was terrific, with front desk and housekeeping staff attending to every need, and breakfast service top notch!! One morning we were overheard possibly skipping breakfast because of the activities we had booked and voila! a to-go pouch of croissants, cheese biscuits and rolls appeared so we "wouldn't leave on an empty stomach". When we did eat on site it was hands down the single best ham and cheese omelette I've ever had anywhere.

In short, this is a great 'farm estate' stay for any wine country or Cape Town needs if you want to be well taken care of, cozy and surrounded by gorgeous fields and mountains that slow your pace down and make you drink it all in!

Room tip: The Coach house was fantastic - recommend!

The hotel has the most amazing location overlooking the vineyards and mountain range, so on arrival its stunning. Once you enter though is a little unexpected. The hotel reception shares the same space as the fine dining restaurant - randomly placed! The rooms are all very different, but only a handful have been recently refurbished and are of a 5-star standard. The older rooms are a little tired with chintzy furniture and out of date bathrooms. The refurbished rooms are on the terrace and are beauitful. With your own small terrace and two sunloungers, these rooms have the best views on the property. The hotel has two swimming pools, small gym and a small spa and a restaurant. If you can stay in a nice room - the hotel has character and a good inclusion in the wine lands.

Room tip: Ask for a refurbished terrace view room

What a lovey experience from the minute we arrived to the minute we left.
We were treated like royalty with unbelievable 6 star treatment.

The breakfast was unbelievable with so much choice and so many delicious items on the buffet that it is impossible to give it justice.

The bedroom was very clean and spacious and the free wine, biltong was a lovey touch.

Other positives

The location of the hotel is in the prime area of Paarl.

There is very little negatives except the limited tv channels and limited dvd's on offer.

We look forward to returning to this splendid hotel.

Well done to the staff of the Grand Roche Hotel
