We had a lovely stay at Ryneveld Lodge. Being so close to the centre of town and the campus, is a huge plus, although rowdy students might be a noise issue on a Friday night. Even so, this will always be our first choice for accommodation when we need to be in town. Friendly and helpful staff accommodated our late arrival and looked after our luggage, even after we had booked out. I would not hesitate to recommend Ryneveld Lodge to any visitor.

I had a very pleasant stay at the Ryneveld Lodge, they arranged pick up for me from the airport where a very welcoming driver was waiting for me. I had one of the Honeymoon suites, only slight issue was the ceiling height in some spots was a little low for a tall person like me. Room was very clean with plenty of space. Breakfast's were most enjoyable and I had no complaints. I was working in the University, so this was an ideal location.

We arrived and had to wait while someone came from up the street in answer to our repeated ringing of the intercom bell at the door - no staff were on-site even though it was prime arrival time in the afternoon. We were given a cursory (and inaccurate) orientation to the place and left on our own to find a tortuous route to get into the parking area behind the building. Not a good start.

Once in our room (Rm 3 - 'The Cottage') we found it spacious enough with a double-bed room and another bedroom with two twin beds plus a living room/kitchen area. However, outlets that worked were hard to find, the lights in the bathroom didn't work and you really had to pull on the door to get it closed. There was a winter duvet on the bed, even though it was 20+ degrees and January heat, and the shower caddy fell down while showering. The original wooden floors and cornice work added character to the place but what is the point of character if it is so poorly maintained?

The real concerning factor was that when we returned from dinner at around 9:30 none of the multiple keys we had been given worked in the now fully shuttered front door. We tried the 'after hours numbers' listed at the door (there were three with no indication of which ones served what purpose) and after ten minutes we finally got an answer on one of them. We were told to go to a side metal gate and punch in a code to get in. We pointed out that it would have been nice if we had been told this was the method of entry in the evenings when we had arrived. Then when we tried the code it didn't work and we had to go through the whole routine of the phones again. When we finally got through we received a different code which did eventually gain us entry to the facilities and our room.

Breakfast was generous in quantity but poor in quality - waffles were of a cardboard texture and coffee tasted burnt. On a positive note they have an excellent value red wine available at the front desk for just 40 Rand (but the white wine was not chilled!)

This guest house is well situated in the heart of Stellenbosch and next to the university so we had no complaint about location. However, it is in dire need of a thorough maintenance and upgrading expenditure (e.g. there is a crumbling and empty swimming pool right in the middle of the courtyard) and far more attention to service quality and staff training.

Thank you for your review of Rynevled Lodge. We welcome any feedback in order to improve Ryneveld Lodge for future guests. We have a few rooms situated in the main building as well as some rooms across the street thus we do move around the entire property. From time to time we check guests into the rooms across the street and then we ask a little patience from guests waiting in front of the door. As stated in your review you did arrive during prime arrival time and this might have been the situation that my receptionist was just busy with a check-in when you arrived.

Our reception area is available daily from 7 am till 7 pm, any problems or questions that our guest's experience can be reported at any time for an easy and speedy repair. All our rooms have microfibre duvet covers. Some guests feel comfortable with this duvet and other guests merely move the duvet to one side and request an additional sheet. We do feel that the duvet cover is standard procedure, any other requests we will be more than happy to help with. Our rooms are also equipped with an aircon in every room for added cooling in the hot summer months.

Upon check-in, all our guests sign our register and thereafter guests receive an information card with the wifi code, emergency number, breakfast times as well as the security gate code. It might be possible that you were overwhelmed by the information upon arrival and misunderstood the procedures once the front doors close. Our sincere apologies for this mishap, it is never our intention to make guests feel unwelcome or stranded during their stay.

We constantly upgrade our breakfast and always research new ideas to keep our guests fully entertained and the taste buds jumping. Thank you for your feedback regarding the waffles, this will be immediately addressed.

Sadly our pool is empty at the moment due to a severe water crisis in the Western Cape/South Africa. We are trying to do our part by saving water and we started with the pool as this takes a lot of water on a monthly basis. We constantly have major meetings with all our staff members and this will definitely be one of the points of discussion at the next meeting. Service is always at the top of our list and we would hate to disappoint any of our guests. Kindest regards Tessa and The Ryneveld Lodge team.

Tired & dirty room & WC, mediocre breakfast, total lack of privacy!!
Had a late 10 pm check-in, made me pay IMMEDIATELY although the first night had been paid for and they had my CC details. Front desk ladies were nice.
Would refrain from recommending this so called hotel.

Thank you for your review of Ryneveld Lodge. It saddens us to hear that you did not enjoy your stay at all. We make it our mission to maintain a high standard of service and cleanliness at all times. Our breakfast has a wide variety of continental options and we work with a self-serve option. A list of cooked breakfast options is also available. We do have a variety of fruits, cereals, bread, croissants, and muffins as well as cheese and cold meat. We are also up for any recommendations from our guests and will always try to improve our breakfast. We do work with a strict pay on arrival policy, unfortunately. Credit card details are not always available for a second view if booked through certain websites. We will immediately see to all the issues mentioned and have this sorted asap. Kindest regards Tessa de Necker (General manager)
