“Much better than expected”

The zoo has a large and fairly comprehensive collection of animals in spacious open grounds. It is as good as better known zoos, such as San Diego, and I'm not sure why it does not have as good a reputation. Plenty of special exhibits and rides - one can even feed the giraffes. Good to combine the zoo with the botanical gardens next door if one has the stamina!

“Not very interesting animals.”

Best, was the large amount of turtles in the water at the entrance you crossed over on a bridge. Friendly Giraffes. Took the ride around, could not see much.

“Large Zoo-- Just O.K.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2012

For the price, if I had it to do over, I would skip the Phoenix Zoo and go to the World Wildlife zoo on the other side of Phoenix near Glendale. It is just a few bucks more and there are better animal exhibits there, aquarium and its not so much walking.

So, for the PHoenix Zoo. It is a 125 acre zoo and everything is VERY spread out... cool for some of the exhibits.. but way too much walking. We literally had to park and walk 1 entire mile just to get to the front entrance as parking is limited. You have to park by the Oakland A's stadium and walk across a busy interseciton and then along a path about 1 mile to the entrance. NOT FOR OLD FOLKS!!
If you are a monkey or bear person, this isnt the zoo for you. There were barely any monkeys and I saw 1 bear. I saw one lion. I saw 1 tiger, a few long horns, 2 giraffe, 2 ostrich and various other little animals. Most exhibits when we were there didnt have any animals or were "temporarily closed" and we would walk and walk just to see one bear before he tucked into some hidden area of a cage. There were quite a few birds. If you want to pet the sting rays, its $4 extra. If you want to walk up on the deck to see the ostrich on the east side of the giraffe/ostrich cage, its "$5 " just to walk on a small short deck and only for a 2 hour window during the day. It is $4 each to ride the train for the 20 minute tour (may be the only thing worth spending money on since there is so much walking) , an extra $10 to rent a paddle boat .

The setting is very pretty. The landscaping, trees, birds and ponds are very pretty. If you like scenary and ambiance over animals, this may be a better fit than the WIldlife ZOo.

My teenagers were bored. I think this is also a cool zoo for young kids because they do have some really cool little areas for the little ones. A neat little petting zoo and "farm" built inside as well as the children's walking area and some neat little playgrounds.

The food is outrageous for pricing. For 4 of us,we bought water and sodas and popcorn and it came to $42.00!.. Admission was $27 each the day we went.

I can truly say i was disappointed after having been to the World Wildlife zoo across town. Spend the few extra dollars to go there. I have been to the Henry Doorley Zoo in Omaha, which is one of the best in the world. I have been to the Minnesota Zoo, and various other zoos across the country. I was not impressed with this one, honestly.

“up close and personal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2012

I have been to this zoo a few times and it amazes me how easy it is to get through. The animals seem to be up close and personal, more here than other zoos I have visited. Make sure to see the wild African dogs,,a "rare" site and "breed"... A real big area for kids to play and parents to relax. Bring your own water and food for the picnic area. food is there for sale though. very nice zoo, one of my favorites.

“Enjoyed throughly”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2012

I almost didn't go and that would of been a mistake. Living in Chicago I felt I had seen the best zoos already, but a friend living in the Phoenix area and from the midwest said the this zoo will be a different experience due to the different climate, vegetation and wildlife and she was right!
