“Perfect in all respects!”
Reviewed 7 February 2012

I have to agree with the former posters, this was a fantastic place. The atmosphere, the food, the casitas - just everything was way beyond what I had hoped for. La Palma is right across the inlet and is suppose to be very upscale and is quite a bit more costly. I cannot imagine how it could be any nicer than Aguila de Osa. It was just perfect in every respect and everything ran smoothly from our pick up to our drop off at the Drake Bay airstrip, Very attentive and friendly staff and no detail was overlooked, great food, well organized tour opportunities. The setting was gorgeous , we were awakened each morning by scarlet macaws outside our room. We had casita #10 which was at the end, so it was secluded and quiet - except for the jungle noises! This may not be a good choice if you had mobility issues as there are steep climbs to the beach as well as from the casitas to the dining/reception area. However, I think this is pretty much the case for most lodges in the Osa that are in secluded locations.
We loved Aquila and I wish we had gone there last instead of first as it set the bar pretty high for the rest of the trip. It was 100% perfect

The Aguila de Osa Inn is just about as nice a place as can be imagined. If you want to get away from it all without really getting away from such things as comfort and fine dining, this is your place. Just getting to the Aguila de Osa Inn is a great experience in itself. We boarded a launch in Sierpe, a tiny little fishing village which is remote enough as it is. After an hour's ride through mangrove swamps and out into the Pacific Ocean we managed to arrive at the inn but not until we had briefly become lodged on a sandbar at the mouth of the cove where the Aguila de Osa is located. Now after such an adventure just to get to this place, I had a bit of trepidation as to what sort of amenities I might find here. I needn't have worried. Our room was spotless. We were a short hike up a mountainside but the view from the room was well worth the climb. Because our room was built on a hillside the veranda surrounding our room was in the trees and we could sit outside (or lie in the hammocks strung across the veranda) and watch a procession of birds, monkeys, and iguanas in the shrubbery. Our room had 15 foot ceilings with a screen around the topmost portion of the wall on three sides, admitting ventilation. Thus the ventilation was excellent and we were never at all uncomfortable even in the hottest part of the day. The rooms were quite large and were beautifully appointed. The photo of a guest room on this website gives you a fair idea of how light and airy the rooms are. The grounds are beautiful. The restaurant is gourmet. Meals are served family style at three big tables. You can't help meeting your fellow guests in this place, so if you want to avoid other people altogether you may not be happy that mealtimes compel some mixing. We enjoyed meeting the other guests at the hotel and considered the dining experience to be a plus. There is a choice of two main courses every night. The first night I had a red snapper, the second night a beef tenderloin filet, and the third night I had a sea bass. All were cooked beautifully. The desserts were imaginative and delicious. Although it has been noted that this hotel has no swimming pool, you have the whole Pacific Ocean to swim in. In fact, what with Cano Island near-by, fishing, and exploring Corcavado National Park, there is no shortage of activities to occupy several days. If you are looking for a way to channel your inner Robinson Crusoe with a gourmet chef for a man Friday, you cannot do better than the Aguila de Osa.

Room Tip: Get a room ventilated on 3 sides. We stayed in room #1 which was close to the main lobby/restaurant...

This was the last leg of our trip before returning for a night in San Jose, and it was worth waiting for.
It far exceeded our expectations, and for once, even the hype.
It is magical. You are completely cut off from the world - it took a plane ride, followed by a jeep ride and then a boat ride - all in all nearly three hours to get there.
The rooms are built into the side of a rock face so all get a stunning view.
Well appointed rooms, hot water, a beautiful dining/living/lobby/whatever/bar area by the sea.
The food is stunning and there are cocktails every night
The staff can never do enough for you and no request is too extreme.
There is a small beach nearby, a small harbour with many boats, and trips to nearby Cano island, dolphin and whale watching and incredible snorkelling.
Hikes into the rainforest for animal and bird watching are also a must.
This is one of the most memorable places we have ever been and is certainly on the list to rturn - something we rarely do.
One thing - despite the 5 stars this is NOT 5* Hilton style. Remember you are in a tropical rainforest on the side of a cliff! I like my accommodation to reflect this although you want for nothing.
As an aside we did our tour of CR starting in Tortuega for 3 nights then moving on to Arenal for 3 nights where we hired a car. We then moved on to Manuel Antonio for 3 nights before moving on to Corcovado. We had a night in the Grano d'Oro in San Jose coming and going.
If we were to do it again I think we would book the car from after we finished in Tortuego as we lost a complete day with waiting and travelling from there to Arenal and it's not that far. Also it would have been handy to have had the car for Manuel Antonio, but we would have had to give it up for the flight to Corcovado.
The car would be of no use in Tortuego, San Jose or in Corcovado.
We discussed the itinerary with Wanda of Costa Rica Vacations as we had no knowledge of the country beforehand. With her help we came up with a suitable plan as we dislike "tours" and crowds and like to do our own things. Her recommendations were spot on. She did all the bookings once we were agreed, and the result was a rather complicated ininerary of check-ins and pick-ups, and I felt sure that at least one would be missed. I was pleasantly surprised to find that each connection was made exactly on time, and all the accommodation was more than up to scratch.
I am sure there must be bad food served in CR but we never had a bad meal the whole time we were there - and some of the meals were exceptional given that they were served in small out of the way restaurants.

We stayed at Aguila for 3 nights and it was the highlight of our Costa Rica trip. We were lucky enough to get room 11 - a long walk, but very private with great views. After flying in on Sansa air we travelled by 4x4 and then boat to arrive at Aguila. First we went kayaking up the river and later in the afternoon we went to a secluded beach. On the second day we went on the Mangrove Tour where we saw sloths, crabs, iguanas, turtles, 3 kinds of monkeys, crocodiles, caimans, tree crabs and a boa constrictor. On the third day we went on the Cano Island snorkelling trip and within 10 minutes of being in the water we'd seen sharks, a school of baracuda, turtles, a stingray and a moray eel in addition to thousands of beautiful fish.

Food is simple, but very good and shared at communal tables with other guests. Before dinner guests gather for drinks and hors d'ouerves to exchange stories about the activities they'd enjoyed that day.

The setting is rustic with no air conditioning or tv, but the staff is very attentive and makes this a luxury experience for their guests. If not engaged in one of the many activities to choose from, plan to enjoy just lying in a hammock reading and listening to the jungle. We would highly recommend this experience.

Room Tip: Room 11! One of the furthest and most private rooms.

Very nice and professional staff. Excellent fishing and snorkeling. The property was pretty and well-maintained. Once one observes the effort required to provide such fine hospitality in an isolated environment, the price is quite reasonable.

Our only disappointment which was not the fault of Aguila, was our visit to the La Sirena station in Corcovado park. The guide (who was not an employee of Aguila) was not impressive, and the trail is well-worn by humans. I should warn fellow naturalists like ourselves that the famous National Geographic quote, "of being one of the most bio-diverse places on earth' has unfortunately worn out its welcome. I'm sure there is pristine primary rain forest in this park, but the trails that give access to humans lead to an anti-climatic experience. Painfully, we were shown an old tapir in a small patch by our lunch spot which was obviously contrived to be there.

My husband and I had one of our best vacation experiences while staying at Aguila for 8 days/7 nights. From the moment we arrive, our every wish was graciously catered to. The staff members (from boat staff to servers to gardeners) were awesome--accommodating, friendly, helpful, attentive without being intrusive, and they all went above and beyond what we were used to. For instance, one day we saw chicharrones being made for the staff and I made a comment that I enjoyed it with something sour. The next thing I knew, a plate of chicharrones were presented to us while we were relaxing in the dining area. The location was simply breathtaking! We were surrounded by exciting wildlife and gorgeous vistas. We couldn't have been happier. We relaxed some days and went on various excursions on other days. The night hike with Tracy is highly recommended. We look forward to a return visit.

Room Tip: We loved our room -number 11. It was in a fairly private spot and it had a hammock! Be prepared to...

Having heard rave reviews about Aguila de Osa from a number of my friends, I thought I knew what to expect - boy was I wrong!

The scenery and solitude are beyond compare and days are easily filled with activites well suited to all levels of fitness and a broad array of interests. What delighed me the most about this jewel in the jungle was the familial welcoming vibe shared by the staff and the other guests. Right away, I felt at home (despite being in a climate that could not be any more different than where I live). Brad and his staff are genuinely passionate about the area and ensuring each guest has their own unique experience that is meaningful to them. I left Drake Bay with vivid photos, great memories and new friends - gracias!
