We spent the week at Drake Bay Wilderness Resort and had the best vacation. The location is fantastic and well worth the journey. The staff treats you better then royalty, they treat you like family. Making sure that each person's visit is just what they are looking for, modifying trips and meals to everyone special needs. I recommend staying a full week and taking advantage of everything. We went on several adventures with guide Arnold and in one day saw over 44 species of birds with his help. The front of house staff is top and the food really satisfying.

Stayed here for 3 nights during tour of Costa Rica. Spacious and clean accommodation with balcony with view of the Bay. Lovely fauna and flora in the grounds and very nice walk along the coastal rainforest from the resort. Excellent food and service in the restaurant. Also, very helpful and attentive staff throught out the rersort. Really enjoyable boat trips to Corcavado National Park and Cano Island. Lots of wonderful wildlife at the former and enjoyable snorkelling at the latter. Highly recommend the Night Tour with the "Bug Lady", be sure to book in advance not to be disappointed.

My boyfriend and I went to Drake Bay Wilderness Resort for 8 days. We had the best time! I had been to Costa Rica before and this trip was definitely the better one! The resort was well maintained and clean, the staff was really friendly and helpful, the food was fantastic and the excursions were the BEST. We had a wonderful room (probably the best they had) and we were so thrilled. There is no TV, but we didn't need one! We came back from our daily tours/excursions and would take a dip in the pool, hike into town, head to the beach or take the kayak into the river or ocean. The remote location was perfect. The guides were fantastic. We learned so much about the wildlife in Costa Rica. We explored Corcovado National Park, took a boat to beautiful Cano Island, snorkeled, rode horses, went on a canopy tour, swam near waterfalls, drifted through mangroves and went on a night bug tour. We saw monkeys, birds, snakes, sloths, tapier, orca, sharks and so much more. It was truly an amazing stay and I'd recommend it to anyone that loves nature.

Room Tip: For couples, I'd ask for room #45 up on the hill. It's the best!

We loved the area, very nice and helpful staff. Everyone was very friendly and helped out when they could. The rooms are very small and basic.but have great views when you are sitting on patio. I would recommend a room with AC. Few tips:

Breakfast is 6am-8am. Very early...sometimes we went at 7:45 and it was already put away so unclear on the breakfast times. Get there early if you don't want to miss it.

Only one electrical outlet in the room. We used a lot of electronics (laptop, kindle, camera battery charger), so we were running out of space to charge things.

Most of the tours start early (5am-5:30am wakeup). So if you are not a morning person or want more time to relax dont prebook the tours and go with a half day tour like horseback riding or ziptrek.

The lunch on the full tours is not great. (ham sandwich, juice box, cookies), so when you leave at 5am and have lunch at 10:30am you come back from the tours very hungry. Since you miss lunch at the resort you are stuck waiting around for dinner until 6:30. (or snacks at 4:30) Put aside a small snack for yourself from breakfast to tide you over.

Only downside: There are lots of big families that come here, and for the most part it is very enjoyable, but some of the families were quite loud and obnoxious (especially the teenagers, but often times the adults as well). Since the resort is small and meal times are set, you are stuck around ppl who's company you might not want.

The resort was clean, well maintained, and well run by the family who owns it. The staff were friendly and helpful. Food was good. The most amazing thing about the resort is the stunning location and an amazing view of the ocean. Kayaking on the river or the ocean -- take your pick. I absolutely loved staying there! The tour guides were also friendly and informative.

The rooms have no televisions, but when you have the majestic ocean view out as you step out of your cabin, you dont miss any TV.

I was looking for a great yet safe place since I was travelling solo, and I am glad I decided on Drake Bay Wilderness Resort. Relaxing, safe, enjoyable.

We had a fantastic stay at Drake Bay Wilderness Resort! The staff members were helpful in every aspect of our trip, including exchanging emails arrange travel plans, greeting us as we docked, arranging guided tours, teaching us about the area, and even making ginger tea when one of us was feeling under the weather. We traveled during the quiet (rainy) season, and had the fortune of essentially having the place to ourselves. This also allowed time for spending time with the staff throughout the day and at meals- they are all wonderful and kind people!

We took two guided tours- a zip lining tour and a guided rainforest hike. Each trip offered great access to wilderness and adventure! We also hiked, kayaked and fished right from the resort property. There are lots of things to see and do without planning guided tours.

The food was delicious! The kitchen staff prepared a variety of meals with fresh ingredients and beautiful presentation. You will not go hungry!!

The rooms were clean and comfortable. They may be simple by American standards, but they are perfectly fine. They all offer gorgeous views of the bay and are arranged nicely throughout the property.

This is a special place. There are lots of options for activities, and it's also a wonderful place to relax, if that's what you are looking for. We have recommended the resort to several people already, and we look forward to returning some day. This is not a super-easy place to get to, but it is well worth the trip.

We have been to the Drake Bay Wilderness Resort 3 times, the last time with our whole family, all 18 0f us. We ranged in age from late 70's to under 5. Everyone had a blast. Each day we had the choice of any one of 8 different adventures, one more exciting than the next. Can you imagine being in a small boat surrounded by 130 Orca dolphins! Or sliding down a smooth rock into a waterfall. Try waking up in the morning to the song of the howler monkey, or taking a walk in the jungle in the evening to find tiny frogs and trapdoor spiders. Every day they do your laundry, the cabins are charming, the home-cooked food delicious. Even getting to this remote paradise is an adventure! They are constantly upgrading and coming up with new experiences. I promise an adventure to be remembered, whether for a romantic getaway for family fun.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Since it was founded in 1985, Drake Bay Wilderness Resort has continued to be a family run business. Our focus has been to take good care of our guests so that they'll feel right at home. We try to be as flexible as possible, taking into consideration people´s needs and we do our very best to fulfill special requests. For instance, we will prepare meals for special diets. Furthermore, the hotel is situated in one of the most beautiful locations in the area. It has large open areas with a bounty of beautiful flowers, tropical plants, big mango trees, and beach almond trees that attract the raucous macaws. The property gives you the feel of being in a private island since the river flows along the backside of the property and the whole front side meets the ocean. In addition to this, most visitors come to us by boat and the access by land to the hotel is a small path, unreachable by car, that is submerged in a jungle. Best of all, there is a paradise like view of the bay and ocean, reflecting the deep blue sky and, beyond that, hills bound in lush forests. We offer all sorts of extras that help make our guests' stay more comfortable and enjoyable. For example, we include a full laundry service. Kayaks close to the water are always at our guests' disposal. We have a restaurant, bar, swimming pool, dock, and hammocks to relax under the shade of a tree with the cool ocean breeze blowing on you. From our hotel we take guests on adventures in snorkeling, hiking, diving, canoeing and whale watching. Visitors often see four species of monkeys, sloths, tapir, caiman and a myriad of birds, including the scarlet macaw, mangrove hawk, toucan... ... more   less
