Stayed here last week. It is a traditional hotel right on the seafront. Lovely big lobby with a terrace off the bar over-looking the sea. There was a pianist in the bar in the evening which we really enjoyed. We found the staff to be very nice and very helpful. Our room had a fridge and a hairdryer on the wall in the bathroom. The first two days, Sat and Sun, the buffet breakfast was excellent, just what you would expect. Come Monday the buffet closed and was relocated to a smaller restaurant upstairs. It was ok but not a patch on the one downstairs. This may have been down to the number of residents. Alberto the chef was extremely pleasant and helpful. We really liked this hotel.
There are however a few things which really need addressing as this hotel advertises as a 4 star.
First of all there are no irons in the room. This is basic in a 4 star worldwide. As some of my clothing had become creased in my suitcase I called reception to be told no irons and no room set up with an iron/board. I spoke with the young lady in guest services who advised me that it is a safety thing. She also told me that some guests bring their own. Surely that is a contradiction? Is it not better to have their own irons maintained by their staff than guests bringing irons which may or may not be safe. Anyway every other hotel I have stayed in appear to be managing perfectly well. The young lady advised me that there was a laundry service, which incidentally is not available on Sundays, and the price list was in the room. Prices for shirts 4 euros, skirt 5 euros, nightgown 13.50 euros and so on. Euros practically same as pounds at the moment. Apart from the obvious it is inconvenient having to call laundry and send off clothes and wait for them to be returned when all you wants to do is run an iron over them and put them on 2 mins later.
The next thing for visitors in the winter season is the disappointment in discovering that residents have to pay to use the indoor pool. It is 15 euros per person so if travelling with a family this can fairly add on to your bill.
Next thing was what I thought the standard safe in the hotel wardrobe. We discovered that it is not the usual 4 digits to be entered. To use the safe in the room you have to ask for a card at reception and pay around 3 euros per day for this privilege. Another thing which is normally standard in a 4 star.
There was no tea/coffee tray in the room. We asked at reception for this and were given one with no charge.
There is no chain or spy hole on the room door which I feel is basic security. Also no door closers so, as breakfast starts at 7.30am, doors start banging all along the corridor from just after 7am so don't expect a long lie.
The hotel is lovely and in a really nice situation, next to the castle, with a walkway along the seafront to the town. Very nice sandy beach. I would also like to mention that this hotel is extremely clean. Our room was immaculate every day.
We would love to go back but would check first to see if any of these things have been addressed first.
