“Disappointing as the experience could have been so much better.”
Reviewed 5 August 2011

There were some good points:

1. The position is fairly central and this hostal is well placed for nearby beaches which were probably the best in Nerja. It can be a good base.
2. We had air conditioning for most of our stay.
3. You can get a good sea view from balcony rooms with good sunlight - but we only had a room like this for one night.
4. The beds are made each day and the maids are friendly and helpful.
5. The place is fairly clean but is it is not spotless and no one cleans under the beds. Nor are the stairwell mopped. I found dirt on the interior landing by simply rubbing my finger on the floor.

The bad points:

1. We signed for a room with a supposed patio. This 'patio' was a dark interior corridor with a table and chairs outside the room. Had we seen the room before signing for it we would have immediately gone somewhere else. The room was small, with a tiny window within the interior of the hostal. It felt more like a prison cell than a guest room as the window had bars on it. The light which entered the room came from high above the the window; all that could be seen outside the window was small interior box-like, place with pipes, etc. It was reminiscent of an open-air chimney. There was no fresh air. Without air conditioning it would have been nearly impossible to breathe.

2. The owner knew about awfulness of this room and what we would make of it - but she and her family did not care. She exhibited false graciousness in her dealings with us and we did not think the room was worth what was being charged for it. It was a place to get away from.

3. We had a balcony room for our last day and this was better. But this did NOT have air conditioning with only an overhead fan. For this we were charged 5 euros more without knowing about the AC. The toilets and showers in both rooms were small. And one had to be careful as you could bang your head on a glass shelf in the balcony room very easily and do oneself a nasty injury.

4. Guests can use the expansive garden but this is hedged around two periods of the day of only three hours long. So guests tended not to use the garden as you could be asked to leave after short while.

5. There is the baleful glare of a dowager-like lady on the ground floor who stares at you as if you have no right being there.

6. The family also own the two star hotel with the same name in the centre of town but there are no synergies between the two as guests in the hostal are unable to use the other property. The hotel is simply promoted as a classier establishment in which visitors could have stayed if they would just fork out more.

7. Towels were changed every three days. Sheets every week. That's not enough in the intense heat of summer.

No doubt this has been a successful family business but they really do not care about customer satisfaction. In the age of "Trip Advisor" such as attitude to paying guests cannot last. Paying guests can find so much better. For what it is, Hostal Mena is not good value for money.

We liked Nerja but would NEVER go back to this hostal.

This hostal is located in a perfect position in the centre of Nerja on a quiet, traffic free street.
The rooms are spotlessly clean, are a good size and the balcony rooms over look the sea and a lovely garden area - perfect.

Room Tip: Worth paying 5 euros extra for the balcony rooms

Hostal Mena.
Situated on a quiet street, very near the Balcon De Europe. The Hostal has lots of character, lovely reception area and gardens. The owner and his family were very friendly and helpful. We booked a room with a balcony and sea views, something I would highly recommend . The room was very clean, but a bit on the small side, as was the shower.

This place is a steal! It is a hostel with a killer view. The room was clean, but the view from the balcony was amazing. Bring soap, shampoo, and beach stuff, as they supplies are bare bones (bath towels and tp provided). Once you arrive, the cleaning service will not show up again until you leave (every 7 days). Be careful about check-in times; the owner is religious about her siesta.

Away from the town center, there's a great bakery with cheap bottled water and excellent sandwiches. The food in Nerja was great (check out the Greek restaurant in the main part of town), and the views were spectacular. The water, however, was a bit colder than we anticipated. Brrr...

We traveled to Nerja for a night in June and were very pleasantly surprised with the Hostal Mena. For only 35 euros (slightly less in low season, slightly more in high season, 5 more euros gets you a room with a terrace), we weren't sure what to expect, but we were not disappointed. The room had a double bed and a tv and phone, and it was very clean. The sheets were a little worn, but clean, so I can't complain.

The location, however, was the best part. It's just two or three minutes to walk to the main square, and about 15 seconds to walk to another really pretty square. In the other direction, away from the main square, 5 minutes will get you down to another pretty street with lots of restaurants that will take you down toward the beach. From the Hostal Mena, you can walk to the beach in less than 10 minutes if you go down the steps by the main square. Also, another good thing is that the bus station is 10-15 minutes (uphill) by foot.

Our only complaint is that it was quite loud, and that's because of the location. There were lots of people going from the main square to other parts of the village along the coast, and with the narrow streets, you hear everything. It really did sound like every conversation happening in the street was happening on our little porch. Also, the little motorbikes are quite loud. That said, there is air conditioning, so you can close the windows and close most of the noise out. I typically prefer to have the windows open, but given the choice between windows open and no sleep, or sleep with the AC, I happily chose the AC.

One other thing to note is that reception is only open from 9:30 am - 1:30 pm, and then again from 5pm until sometime later that evening. So don't arrive during siesta!

Hostal Residencia Mena is right in the centre of Nerja about 2 min walk from the 'Balcony of Europe' and also walking distance to the bus stop if you're arriving by bus. The room was a reasonable size and had a balcony and ensuite bathroom. It's a small hotel (about 10 rooms) and family run so not like those big resorty places. The owners speak a little English which was good since my Spanish is almost non-existant. As it's mainlya family oepration the owners close the reception for most of the afternoon so it wouldn't be convenient if you're arriving at an odd time. There was no air conditioning or breakfast served but at only 37 euros for a double it was pretty good value. They provide towels - the only hostal I stayed at in Spain that did!

Would recommend this hotel to all independent travellers on a budget.
