The hotel is very well situated, within easy walking distance of the sea and the shops in Staithe Street, and the car park is welcome since parking in Wells can be difficult. However, it is expensive for what is provided. Our room, at the back up two flights of steep stairs, had a lovely view but could have done with a lick of paint and attention to detail. The furniture was old, tables marked where people had put down hot drinks (there were no coasters). The windows had Roman blinds that were so old that one was in shreds. A vase of artificial flowers was covered in dust (why was it there at all?). There was a dirty rug on the floor which was a trip hazard. The bottom of the bath needed painting. An excellent choice of tea and coffee was provided but glasses were not washed when the room was cleaned.
For two vegetarians, the two items on the dinner menu were ok but we had to wait a long time for the main course and were never offered a dessert. The menu seemed to be the same for the whole week so we went elsewhere on the second evening.
Our general impression was that there was a lack of management and therefore lack of training of staff. When we arrived, two elderly women with an obviously heavy suitcase, there was no offer of help to get it up two flights of steep stairs. When we left we appreciated the help offered by a young woman who was cleaning but didn't think it should have been her job. In the restaurant we had to wait to be seated although we had booked. Tables were left uncleared at breakfast which made the dining area unattractive.
