A nice place to stay in a fabulous beach town

Review of The Crown Hotel
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 weeks ago
We booked the Crown based on reviews and photos and we were not disappointed. Being from the States we enjoy the old, quirky hotels and inns you find in the UK and this was one. Our stay was for four nights midweek. The location of The Crown in Wells is great, close to the harbor, restaurants and shops. Very walkable. The Wells beach was about a 25 minute walk with a bus from town or public parking should you prefer motorized transportation.

The hotel building is old and charming without nary a single level floor or straight wall to be found. Our room (#10) was at the front of the hotel on the top floor up three flights of steps which were not a problem for us. Hotel staff brought up our luggage for us. The room was spacious with a sitting area and a king-sized bed. The bathroom was a good size with a large soaking tub and separate shower. There was a Nespresso coffee maker and an electric kettle for tea. Fresh cold milk was delivered daily in a Thermos.

In the restaurant a hot breakfast cooked-to-order was served daily along with a selection of cereals, milk, yogurt and juices. This was a nice way to start the day. We ate other meals in the restaurant as well were and always found something delicious.

The town itself is charming and is dog-friendly (as is The Crown). There is no shortage of places to eat lunch/dinner. But I would recommend making dinner reservations, possibly even before you arrive, if there are places you really want to eat at. We were shutout at the Wells Crab House which was fully booked lunch and dinner for two weeks. Oh well, maybe next time.

Overall we really enjoyed Wells in general and The Crown specifically. We highly recommend both.

I took my wife for three nights in one of their "Copper Bath" rooms (Room 19 as our room) and it was a fantastic 3 nights.

Firstly, the Copper bath (ours was outside in a private secluded terrace) is an amazing treat and we absolutely loved it - even if the air is cold - bathing under the stars is just beyond relaxing - The Crown gets 5 Stars for this alone.

The duplex room was spotlessly clean and beautiful and the super king bed was extremely comfortable.

We found the staff very helpful and friendly - the kind of feeling like you're staying with friends - that's the way I personally like the atmosphere.

This is lovely laid back sleepy Wells Next the Sea so expect the pace of everything to be a touch slower than the city, yes the dinner service was a touch slower than a city restaurant chain, but we chatted and relaxed and then the food arrived and was absolutely delicious, as was the breakfast and we loved the cream tea (served between 3-5pm) all gloriously leisurely.

This is a boutique hotel and we got a great boutique hotel experience - it's priced accordingly - not the cheapest but not the most expensive either - we felt it was worth pushing the boat out and paying a bit extra.

The three nights we spent at The Crown exceeded our expectations and that's always a nice feeling.

We will be booking again for next summer.

Anyone who complains in any way about this hotel is deluded. It’s an old building with appropriate decor that suits the building and its era. The room was superb, comfortable and welcoming. Very spacious for a cozy room. Tea, coffee machine and biscuits. Had a great nights sleep. Easy to get to the centre of town and the beach. Breakfast was superb, high quality and brilliantly cooked with a distinct Norfolk flavour. Wish we had booked for dinner. BTW book direct and a cream tea awaits in check-in. Staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. We will defo be back.

Room tip: Remember you have to move your car from car park before check out. Do it early as the town and car parks get very full.

I took my elderly mother, niece and 2 daughters for lunch. Me and mum had sandwiches, which were fine. The girls ordered feta cheese, beans and chargrilled peppers, which sounded good. However, when their meal arrived, it looked like side salads that consisted mostly of lettuce leaves. I think my niece had one green bean and my daughter one piece of pepper. They were still hungry, so I ordered them the soup of the day. The soup was unpalatable, as it was like eating mouthfuls of salt. We have never experienced anything like it.
Staff was cheerful and friendly and apologetic.

Sadly, disappointing.
The location in Wells-Next-The-Sea is exceptional, picturesque and the building oozes heritage too. The hefty price tag though did not match the experience of our stay - the room we stayed in was in desperate need of some urgent TLC, damaged carpet, furniture missing paint, faulty bathroom door handle and a shower tray past it’s best too.

Also, a note to those travelling and expecting EV charging - this comes at additional cost and is limited to 5 hours only on a slow domestic charge.

Dogs only allowed in bedrooms and we had to eat our expensive dinner in a small room with 3 tables at the front of the hotel. This meant that in the morning we had to take it in turns to walk the complete length of the hotel to reach the substandard cold breakfast table. Our friend, who is a wheelchair user, found this very difficult. The food was expensive but average. Next time we will stay at The Globe.

Room tip: Don't stay here if you've got a dog
