Party of six. 2 of us had Sweet n Sour Chicken. Quantity far exceeded quality I’m afraid. Bland doesn’t even begin to describe the flavour and cherry tomatoes in the sweet n sour was just weird. Massive plate of food but I’d have much rather have had half the size and four times the quality, neither of us hardly touched our meal and mentioned the quality to the waiter who in turn brought the chef who kindly refunded it from our bill. The chips were undercooked and we left most of them. Great beer but in the opinion of our party of six, poor food. And not cheap, nearly £14 for gammon and jacket potato is high for a pub.

After spending the weekend at a local caravan site we decided a good hearty lunch was in order and having passed this pub many times on our travels we decided to give the Sunday roast a try. We arrived early and realised we had made a good choice as whilst we were ordering drinks the place was filling up very quickly with families and one very large party who virtually filled the dining room. As we had not booked we were asked if we minded sitting in the bar area to eat, we said of course we didn't and several other people were doing the same. We were given a table number and within minutes we were called through to the Carvery.
There were three meats to choose from....turkey, gammon and beef. All were beautifully cooked, very moist and tender. They were served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and then you helped yourself to carrots, broccoli, red cabbage and mashed potatoes plus gravy and sauces. There was gluten free gravy and gluten free Yorkshire puddings available which delighted our daughter-in-law as often the gravy can be made but rarely the puddings....one very happy diner!! The vegetables were cooked to perfection and although there was not a huge range to choose from this was more than made up for by the quality offered.
We all cleared our plates and although, there was an extensive list of puddings, again including several gluten free we could not unfortunately manage anything else. The waiting on staff were all friendly and welcoming including the chef who obviously enjoys his work and takes pride in serving his customers. The whole bill for four plus a round of drinks came to £45.50 which we all thought was excellent value.
I would highly recommend this Sunday Carvery to anyone who likes a good traditional Sunday roast in a lovely atmosphere and say a big thank you to all concerned...we will return hopefully very soon. Thank you Red Lion!

Historic pub with ambience. Room was clean and comfortable. Staff was very nice. We got there late because we were lost and they ordered Chinese food for us because we hadn't eaten. Lots of locals eat and drink in the pub and restaurant - the food was excellent. The breakfast was made-to-order - the eggs were delicious.

Stayed 2 nights. Friendly, helpful, welcoming staff; immaculate, comfortable en suite room. Excellent wide choice of freshly-prepared meals, with local veg', and wonderful (choice of five (5) hot dishes) breakfasts. It's a traditional English country pub' of a very high standard in every respect. The proprietor has a lifetime's experience of running a pub's and it shows in the quality of service and services provided for the traveller. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: all rooms on same upstairs corridor; good sound insulation; overlook countryside - lovely
