I had the pleasure of spending two nights at Explora Rapa Nui in January 2012. I was absolutely blown away by the island itself but staying at Explora really brought the entire experience to another level. Having spent the first two nights of my trip in Hanga Roa before moving to Explora, I can say without a doubt that the food and rooms at Explora are the best to be found anywhere on the island. The rooms are chic and exceptionally-appointed with large jacuzzi tubs, plush robes and organic toiletries. In the restaurant, the menu changed daily and featured lots of fresh seafood and local ingredients. I especially liked the evening hors d'oeuvres with cocktails while you planned out your next day's adventures with the guides. But I would have to say that my favorite parts of the entire trip were the expertly-led tours of the island. Explora's team of guides (led by the always smiling Joanna) were absolutely exceptional and really made the island come alive for me. We visited all of the major sites and often had them all to ourselves thanks to clever timing by the guides. Overall, a truly wonderful stay. Oh, and one bit of advice, if they ask you if you want to join the picnic for lunch the next day...just say YES. You won't regret it.

Room Tip: There is not a bad room in the entire lodge. They all have ocean views.

Dear traveler,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this very kind and detailed review.

I never tire of writing this, but despite of all our work and effort to have a wonderful lodge, top notch service and gourmet food, the core of explora are our expert guided explorations. explora never wanted to be “just” a lodge in a stunning environment. Every journey we offer has been thought of as an exploration to enable you to get to know and, at the same time, to experience. Form the first day, explora decided to offer in-depth exploration because we wanted our travelers to be able to interact with their environment and establish relationships with other people and to be a part of, rather than observing, each situation they encounter - engaging not only with reason but also with senses and emotions.
We believe that every journey is also internal, that as we move from one place to another, we are also moving somewhere within ourselves.

Please remember that after visiting one explora lodge, you are entitled to the benefits of our CESA - Club Exploradores del Sur de América - a recognition program with benefits including rate discounts and room upgrades for repeat guests.

Yours sincerely,

Jesús Parrilla

My husband and I and a friend recently stayed at explora Rapa Nui. Having been lucky enough previously to stay at explora in Atacama and Patagonia, we had very high expectations of the latest addition to the explora stable. May I say that we were not disappointed (of course - should have known that - it is explora after all!). During the 5 hour flight there were the odd thoughts of 'Is it worth it?' - but once you are met by the friendly explora staff at the airport, luggage whisked away and you are driven to the exquisite hotel, all cares and doubts disappear. The lodge is set on a ridge with glorious views to the Pacific Ocean; the rooms are lovely (great baths!), the food excellent and the wines are a bit too good for the liver. Pool and jacuzzi area gorgeous as are the other communal areas, glorious architecture and interior design.

An earlier reviewer has commented on a conference group at the hotel. When we arrived there were about 45 left from a very large conference group but at no time did the hotel falter in its attention to us.

Our excursions around the island were fantastic, taken by knowledgeable and friendly guides. We too had the picnic in the cave with the surf pounding outside. The trip to the quarry was especially interesting.

Our friend had never been at an explora hotel and we had wondered if we had oversold the experience. He announced that he 'loved every minute of it' and that you could not oversell it. Thank you in particular to Giovanna. If you are considering going to the spiritual Rapa Nui, do try to stay at explore - worth every cent.

Dear traveler,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this very kind and detailed review.

Naturally, we are delighted to hear that you returned to explora and that you’ve also convinced a friend to experience explora Rapa Nui with you. In fact we are very happy to share that more than 15% of our guests are return customers, who make use of CESA - Club Exploradores del Sur de América – explora’s recognition program with benefits including rate discounts and room upgrades for repeat guests.

I also want to especially thank you for pointing out that the large party that we hosted at the lodge during your stay did in no way interfere with your explora experience. I am very grateful for your positive feedback.

With kindest regards,

Jesús Parrilla

We recently stayed at Explora Rapa Nui, from June 10th until the 13th, to celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary.
My review would have been better in different circumstances, but the fact that this small hotel was full with a seminar group, that used probably more of the 90% of the place, ruined our experience.
I will say that the setting is very nice, but it is not ready to host a large group of people, and tourists at the same time. They gathered every day in the lounge area-turned-into-a-meeting room, which didn't even have a door to isolate them from the rest of the travelers, which made it awkward to pass by and keep silence to not disturb them.
I believe that paying what we did, you wouldn't expect to encounter this type of problem.
The second big problem was during eating times. The restaurant of course, was monopolized by the group, leaving two or three small tables for the tourists at the end of the dining area. The group was very loud, making it difficult to carry a conversation with my husband, not really my idea of spending quality time during a holiday. One night, when we arrived for dinner, there wasn't actually a table for us! The waiter told us that she was sorry but there were more people than expected and nothing else. Awkwardly enough, we stepped out of the restaurant not knowing what to do, since there's no room service available at Explora Rapa Nui. I have to say though, that a gentleman came after five minutes and offered us his own table, being Mr. Mike Rapu himself. It was very considerate of him, but shouldn't be necessary in a place like this.
The excursions were good, and I have good things to say of most of the guides that we met. Special mentions go for Natalia, Cristián and Gina, that were very helpful, answered all our questions and provided excellent information. Thumbs down will go to Thomas, that gave little to no information and showed a lack of interest in showing the sites, and when we went on our way back to the resort and passed through the town of Hangaroa didn't agree on showing us the
town, even though we asked him on several opportunities, it wouldn't probably take us long to see it. It seemed to us, that he was on a hurry to get rid of us. I don't think is the right attitude for the profile of the guide that the resort offers.
Nevertheless the island is beautiful and we loved it, but I think the hotel was wrong not to warn us (there were just five guests, including us, outside the large group), that they were hosting a group meeting, that took most of their resources. The hotel has 30 rooms and the group was over this number, so the proper thing would have been to have the hotel only for them, or warn the tourists, so you could choose in advance if it was a problem for you.
For what we were charged I think we should have had the chance of deciding for ourselves. The hotel had the potential, but being caught in another group's event, the relation price/quality, drop deep on the quality factor.
As you can read, we couldn't enjoy the experience that many here mention.
No real 'personal' experience for us.
Giovanna was warm and nice as everybody else mentions.
I would have loved to visit when the time is right.

Dear traveler,

It was a great pleasure being able to discuss directly with you earlier today and I am very pleased to learn that our prompt response and proposed solution pleased you.

After conducting a proper investigation, we have concluded that there clearly was an oversight with your reservation as all parties involved failed inform you that a large party was going to be at the lodge during your stay. We have addressed the matter internally and directly with your travel agency so that information of this, or any other nature, is properly conveyed following the proper and standard industry channels of communication. Regardless, having a full establishment during your stay by no means should have caused inconvenience to you or to the other individual travelers.

This party happened to be composed of members of an organization, who have been contributing to the health, social development and well-being of the Rapa Nui people for years now. They chose our lodge as their base in order to be able to evaluate the effects of their contribution, and also took the opportunity to explore Rapa Nui in a more intimate way.

We look forward to your next visit and hope that it will be a satisfying one.

Sincerely,

Jesús Parrilla

My significant other and I stayed at Explora Rapa Nui for four nights in May 2012. We were not disappointed. Everything about the hotel - under the direction of the wonderful Giovana - was brilliant. The tours organised were excellent and definitely the best waY to experience what Easter Island has to offer. The guides were all wonderful. Joanne deserves a special mention. MANY THANKS

I was fortunate enough to stay at the Explorer Atacama in '07 for 4 nights traveling alone. i couldn't wait to plan another trip to include Easter Island. We were on Easter Island for 5 nights to experience the beauty of the Explora Lodge, the warmth of the staff, the experience of the explorations with fabulous, knowledgable guides, and delicious food. It is totally worth the 5 hour plane ride to get there. The hotel is situated on the most magnificent piece of land, with views of the Pacific Ocean. The rooms are spacious, with the nicest amenities, private w.c. and hug tub. I would recommend this outstanding property to any of my friends who wanted a special experience, were eager to learn about an ancient culture that is centered around the moai, enormous statues made out of volcanic rock.

Room Tip: All the rooms face the ocean, i can't say that one room is better than another, they are all good.

Dear traveler,

Thank you for your very kind review of your explora Rapa Nui experience. I am particularly delighted to hear you very positive feedback about our explora guides, who are vital to the explora experience.

In addition to your experience, please be aware that explora recently launched new ethnocultural expeditions in Atacama and on Rapa Nui. This new way of exploring two explora locations complement our range of adventures and have been designed for travelers with a thirst for a deeper understanding of the places they visit.

Please allow me to remind you that after visiting one explora lodge, you are entitled to the benefits of our CESA - Club Exploradores del Sur de América - a recognition program with benefits including rate discounts and room upgrades for repeat travelers.
