“Attractive Animal Park Outside of Tomatave”
Review of Parc Ivoloina

Parc Ivoloina
Reviewed April 6, 2017

This park is about half an hour north of Tomatve at the end of a bumpy dirt road. I much prefer to see Lemurs in the wild, and many of the Lemurs here are in cages. But the NGO funding the park is conservation minded and is trying to save some of the species that are critically endangered. There are also some captice chameleon, too. Our guide was knowledgeable and eager to share information. There are some Lemurs roaming free in the area, but as I visited on a rainy day I did not see any. In sum, not the best place to see Lemurs, but if you are in Tomatave, have the time, and have not seen Lemurs, it is worth the trip.

After visiting the Lemurs park in Antananarivo, the lemurs at the Parc Ivoloina were a slight disappointment.
Most (80%) were in cages, apparently for rehabilitation but it was pretty cool to see wild lemurs high in the trees.

The walk around the park was amazing though. A friend and I trekked all the long routes; a particular highlight being the 'Belle View' at the top of the park. The view was fantastic; you can see all the way to the ocean and beyond.

A very good use of an afternoon.

Getting to the parc is slightly harder... many many potholes and large puddles to avoid,

Ask for the tour guide called Flavien. He gave us so much interesting information. He stayed longer with us to explain more about the parc.
They do a nocturne tour at 5.30pm too.

I loved it and I got to feed a chameleon.

Parc Ivoloina is about 25 minutes north of the Toamasina airport. So, if you haven't seen any lemurs, this is an easy way to do so before you leave. Be forewarned that the last couple of miles of "road" to the parc are dirt and are VERY rough. It took almost 15 minutes to get to the parc after turning off the main road. We were in a nice sturdy SUV and were glad we were. One of our friends had taken a Tuk-Tuk to the parc a few months before, so it can be done.

Besides lemurs, the parc also has some tortoises and chameleons, but the emphasis is on the lemurs. There are 3 different tours offered, 1 hour, 2 hour, and 3 hour. Other reviews have described them, so I won't try here. We didn't have a lot of time, so we hired a guide and took the 1 hour tour. I checked how long our tour actually lasted; it was about 1 hr 10 minutes. Our guide was very knowledgeable and added a lot vs. just reading the signs at each enclosure.

The lemurs are in large cages and appear to be well cared for. They are typically being rehabilitated before release back into the wild. There were some lemurs way up in the trees, but they were too high up to get a good view of them.

Overall, the parc is a nice way to see some lemurs, but it's not the same as seeing them in the wild in other parts of the island. On a positive note you will probably see more different types of lemurs here than other places. We saw 10 different types of lemurs here.

If you want to feel real forest, come and see. Entrance fee 8 usd dollar for person. 1guide fee 5 usd. But it is difficult to go to there. Recommend to use taxi. It takes 40minutes From downtown to this place .
