“Cosy resort in a volcano's shadow”
Reviewed 12 January 2011

We stayed at Jungle Oasis for two nights over the New Year period and what a brilliant new years experience!

We were picked up at Tanna airport by a smiling Phillip from the resort who met us, then the great ride over to the other side of the island to where the resort it. When you come over the hill into the ash plains and see the mighty Mt Yassur and start hearing the booms of the volcano you know you're somewhere special.

Jungle Oasis is just a stones-throw away from the entrance to the volcano park so probably one of the handiest places to stay if you want to head up a few times. I went up twice, once in daylight and sunshine and the other at night. A great experience although I can understand why some find it quite ominous. If this active volcano was in NZ or Australia I doubt Health and Safety would let you get up there!!

As for the resort itself, it is simple and basic. Do not expect luxury and be prepared for bugs and spiders as you would in any tropical clime, and maybe some rats (we didn't see any rats but others did. We were warned not to keep food in our rooms and we didn't,so maybe that was why).

The home made meals by Joyce were lovely considering she cooks by a single candle in the kitchen, bless her! And it's a BYO if you want to take wine. Tusker is available though. We always take a sleeping sheet when we're in outer islands anyway, but the bedding looked a little worse for wear so it was probably a good idea.

Overall, an intimate, friendly resort where it's easy to meet people in the shadow of volcano Mt Yassur.

The location is amazing 5 min walk to the entrance of the volcano, but be prepared this is backpacker accomadation and unfortunately the accomadation does not have a sealed roof and there are rats on the premises. The generator goes off at 21:30 so bring a torch to get to the toilet.
On the positive side the grounds are immaculate and the rooms are basic but are cleaned daily. The food is Tanna style and always well presented. The staff are very friendly but you need to get used to vanuatu time, things happen later rather than sooner.
Large groups come here on Volcano tours and the small restuarant is amazing at dealing with this,
Local entertainment is provided on some nights and is geat. The trip accross from the airport is breathtaking and the volcano is spectacular.

Stayed at Jungle Oasis for 2 nights. As explained in previous review it is not for those expecting 5 stars. In saying that, I would highly recommed the bungalows and the location. I would stay at least 4 nights as there is a huge amount to see this side of Tanna compared to white grass side. Kelson and his staff are great, meals nice and just enjoy the place for what it is. Volcano is just amazing and so we went twice. We were fortunate enough to visit a ceremony in a neibouring village "not far 2 hours walk away" which was being held while we were there which was great. Thanks guys for an awesome experience we will never forget our stay at Tanna.

I stayed in Jungle Oasis in March for 4 nights and really enjoyed every single day! Kelson, the owner, and Jerry, his brother, are not only great and very helpful guys, they also know pretty much everything about the island.
The private huts have shared bathrooms and are scattered around a beautiful tropical garden with huge trees and colorful flowers. The huts are rustic but a real bargain for the money. If you don't expect a multi-star hotel, then Jungle Oasis is definitely a big deal.
Another big advantage of Jungle Oasis is its perfect location. From there you can easily walk up the volcano in less than one hour. From all other hotels around Yasur you need to drive with a car, which not only is much more expensive, it also makes you dependent on the timetable of the tour driver.
For some photos of Tanna please have a look at my photo gallery at http://www.karsten-rau-photography.com/vanuatu_volcano_yasur_tanna.htm .

A must. I would defnintely go back here.

If you want to really experience the volcano, you have to stay at Jungle Oasis Bungalows. It is an easy to moderate walk just up the road and you're standing on the volcano. The owner - Kelson - 's daughter actually took us up. This is a real live exploading volcano and will not dissappoint. And all night long you can hear the rumbles in the distance. Just amazing. Make sure you take a torch with you as you'll be up there until after dark to get the best effect. I recommend getting a lift back down the mountain for the same reason - but totally worth the walk up. It also gets surprisingly chilly up there once the sun sets so wear trousers and bring a jacket.
We had grandmas and little kids climbing Yasur with us, so don't worry if you're not fit. just take it slow. Its a bit scary if you're afraid of heights.

The cabins themselves are rustic but comforable and in the Tanna style. They're scattered about in the jungle. Perfect for backpackers and the less pampered tourist, or someone looking for a more authentic off the beaten path experience (no point coming to Tanna at all if you're not!). We splurged a bit and got the tree house just for novelty sake. So much fun, but comfortable too. Come with mosquito nets over the beds, clean linnen and blankets and most cabins as wel as the tree house have a varanda to sit and chill on. There are a variety of cabins with different numbers of beds so good and economical for a group. Check out the pictures.

This place is actually on the ash planes, but just far enough away that the grounds have sprouted with little gardens that are well tended, the ashy sand raked daily and there's hidden scuptures everywhere.

The generators do go off at about 10pm, as with everywhere out from the main town, so bring torches/candles. No shops either, so bring your own snacks. I was a bit suspect about the water here so bring that too if you can, or purifying tablets.

Basic shared flush-toilet blocks and shower, open air basins. All basic and a bit rickety but functional. Cold water only.

Everything was easy to organise and went very smoothly, including transfers to/from Jungle Oasis. We just emailed to arrange everthing. Check out the website at http://www.ktct.net/Oasis/home.html. Paid in cash when we got there. Remeber there will be no ATMs out here, so make sure you get cash before arriving. Probably a good idea to print out your bookings details etc as well as there is no internet out here.

We were pleasantly surprised by the food served. At dinner we had fresh cooked omlettes made with all kinds of locally grown vegetables. Delicious. They checked if we were vegetarian and catered for that. Beer is available. Breakfast was toast with different spreads. No gourmet buffet, but fresh authentic food. The staff are very friendly and helpful and will organise activities for you.

Jungle Oasis is run by locals and for locals, so a stay here supports the economy. I recommend bringing old t-shirts or kids books to leave behind. It is really hard getting simple things like this into Tanna and comparatively expensive to buy. The people here are so friendly, kids will wave and dance when they see you, so cute. We had a great ute ride back to the airport on the last day and were able to talk to a local school teacher about the island and life there.
