“It was above my expectations.”
Reviewed 7 January 2012

We had a woderfull year end in Kaskazy. The hotel is excellent, nicely furnished room, was cleaned daily. Good and friendly staff in the restaurant in the garden and also the entertainment team. We eat fantastic meals all time. The only problem is the beach but 10 minutes walk on the white sand can be found a good place for swimming. I can recommend it and would go back.

mombasa as a city is beautiful as far as the beaches go.more specifically, the south coast(diani) is considered the jewel of mombasa.thats why we were really looking forward to stay in mombasa.little did we know that the hotel we'd booked at was far from good!upon arriving, we reported straight to the reception. The receptionist was not very forth coming and was abit hesitant in serving us and even though we'd paid for our 2night stay in full before arrival, he couldnt even confirm that...obviously, shows how the management works!next, they put bands on our arms as though we were in hospital...really takes away the holiday feel...we were then escorted to our rooms and on the way where, the staff member mentions in part of his conversation that the hotel is under receivership...now, my review illustrates just how these guys are minimising costs at the expense of the holiday-maker (which is you and me...unfortunately).the room was dated.small and furniture was old too.the bath tub was all old and handles rusted.water was not flowing out well.only thing new in there was the ac unit.we decided to check out the beach.it was all full of coral.literally.you could not even walk on the beach without slippers. Next, we go back to the pool/bar area.all the pool beds and chairs are taken up by some very arrogant germans who've obviously visited this hotel on its cheap offer.the all inclusive drinks were really not even worth having.if you went for bottled soda, then they served this to you in dirt stained plastic tumblers...all in all a real put off...dinner was again below average.staff was not happy looking at.oh forgot to mention, i'd ordered tea at about 4pm.normally you'd expect the color of freshly made tea to be light brown.what i was given was far from fresh.it was like dark tan.we went to look for another hotel and ended up staying at southern palms, where we found attention to every detail. I would never even think of visiting this hotel even if they offered stay for free.

Excellent place for a good resting holiday-been there before and shall certainly come back- several possibilities for Safari, Fishing and river trips.Good food with variation!
Beautifull rooms and place- excellent staff.
Have to stay in the place- no nearby restaurants-rather remote place- but thats fine with me!

Let´s start with the good: public spaces, terraces, pool, pool surrounding, friendly staff
Average: the food first three days, then you really get tired of the same overcooked underspiced stuff. It´s quantity and not quality that is available and it is put to ample use by some conference guests. We stayed at other hotels/restaurants in Kenya and we could compare the food and prizes. Kaskazi is certainly worse than other comparable places. Rooms are ok, not really good but not bad either. Personnel is friendly but not really capable. A request out of ordinary creates a lot of action but no result.
Bad: the beach absolutel bad, it is a dead coral reef, quite shallow ( at low tide for first 200 hundred meters at most 80 centimetrs) the see is milky white with coral sand and mixed with plenty of dead kelp. You can not swim, snorkeling is useless nothing to see up to 400 hundred meters into the see, a lot of sea urchins. The beaches about 1 km from the hotel are better but you have to get through a lot, and i mean a lot of very persistant hawkers. You really never get used to it and finally you really start not liking it at all. I do not appreciate bad entertainment and off key singing between 9 and 11 PM.

Absolutely not worth the 4 stars and we certainly will not be coming back

It was my first time visiting this hotel, and I have to say that I was a bit disappointed. I went there as a family group with my wife and the whole family including my parents. We arrived at the hotel in the mid afternoon and couldn’t access our hotel rooms until late evening as they were not ready. We then decided to check out the ‘beach’ but were dismayed by it. The so called beach was basically a coral reef. I had dreamt of having a holiday where I could have my naked feet sinking in the beach sand and lying next to the warm ocean, but clearly this wasn’t the place for that. Worse still, there were hawkers there ready, waiting to pounce on us to sell us stuff we didn’t like.

Not to dampen our holiday spirits, we decided to go check out the rooms. Me and my wife got lucky and were given an ocean view room. The room itself was okay. It was cool and the air conditioning was pretty good. I wasn’t expecting much considering what we paid for it, but was pleasantly taken aback by the room size and how clean it was.

The food was also relatively good and can’t complain about it. It is an all inclusive hotel and food was basically available throughout the day. There was also an ‘open bar’ and was quick to sample their local cocktails. I recommend everyone visiting Kaskazi to sample the ‘mzuri sana’ drink.

All in all, I recommend this hotel if you are visiting as a family and not a couple. This is definitely not a ‘romantic gateway’ for couples. And I think the negative reviews here are a bit excessive as it was not as bad as I thought it would be. I otherwise enjoyed my stay there but will opt for another hotel on my next holiday.

The resort has been turning moments into memories for our guests for over 18 years. The resort's magnificent architecture (modeled after 5th century Sunni Arab palaces), coupled with the ingenious use of the landscape to create cascading ocean view terraces surrounded by hanging gardens makes it a one of a kind resort in all of the East African coast line. THE RESORT EXPERIENCE: Kaskazi Beach Hotel provides unparalleled options and unique experiences to our guests, from on foot beach tours exploring surrounding beaches and venues, to onsite resort experiences including three restaurants, three bars and lounges, all day long sports and activities provided by our entertainment team, nightly entertainment, a kid's club, and so much more. For those who want to explore the Diani Beach night life, take one of our resort’s taxi cabs to the famous Ali Barbour and The Forty Thieves beach bar and dance club located only a five minute drive from the resort. There you can dance under the stars and directly on the white sands of Diani Beach. Why choose this resort: The fact that over 50% of our guests are repeat guests who have come to Kaskazi Beach Hotel two to three times a year for over 18 years says a great deal about us. Otherwise, our great and all too caring staff who are always eager to assist you, our excellent cuisine (rated the best in the South Coast by Europe’s largest Travel Agency, TUI), our flexibility in Meal Plans (All-Inclusive or Half-Board), our extremely reasonable rates, and our convenient location, will ensure that you get everything and more than you expect. ... more   less
