The sheer volume and variety of temples is impressive, and unlike any place I’ve ever been. But the big temples are swarming with some of the most aggressive merchants I’ve ever fought off, and the little temples for the most part are very poorly taken care of (often with animal droppings, cigarette butts and other human trash littered within and without). Occasionally there were brooms leaning against the temples so my boyfriend or I would try to clean them up a little, but it got more depressing the more temples we saw. On top of that, even just walking or biking from place to place made you succeptible to being harassed by potential tour guides trying to take you for a ride. The unceasing solicitation for tours and trinkets made staying in the hotel or isolating on a boat tour feel safer and quieter.

I have been there 7 years ago and you feel that there is not a dedicated protection like World Heritage to keep it in an original way. Myanmar tries to do restoration but it is a mismatch. Also, new buildings come up between the temples and were used to be horses and charge are cars only driving around.

Highly recommend to go for a guided tour, where the guide will show you to the places of interest / temples, as well as the story telling of its history. Very meaningful and informative. Otherwise, hire an Ebike and explore the site on your own! It will be equally interesting and fun! The ancient temples are simply amazing and very well preserved.

This is a wonderful place to visit. The history is astounding, you need to be a little bit agile as there is a lot of walking and more than a little, uphill, stony, walking too. A lot of this in bare feet! But oh so worth it.

Get a guide, it's impossible to appreciate the history otherwise, unless it is your speciality. We didn't do the balloon ride as we visited in May and they do not run them then. May is a little hot, but so quiet and no crowds, no waiting, no queueing. It may be out of the high season but you get to appreciate the temples and stupa in peace.
