The sheer volume and variety of temples is impressive, and unlike any place I’ve ever been. But the big temples are swarming with some of the most aggressive merchants I’ve ever fought off, and the little temples for the most part are very poorly taken care of (often with animal droppings, cigarette butts and other human trash littered within and without). Occasionally there were brooms leaning against the temples so my boyfriend or I would try to clean them up a little, but it got more depressing the more temples we saw. On top of that, even just walking or biking from place to place made you succeptible to being harassed by potential tour guides trying to take you for a ride. The unceasing solicitation for tours and trinkets made staying in the hotel or isolating on a boat tour feel safer and quieter.
