This beach is very impressive with clear turquoise waters and a fresh water river emptying into the sea. Safe for tourists, lots of food vendors and overall fun place. The surf is rough and very serious so be careful if you do go into the water.

San Rafael is a beautiful spot to have some fresh fish, bath in the cold waters of a mountain spring and have a few cold beers with the local Dominicans. We were there during the afternoon; we were told to stay away from the area at night - apparently a bit of a party spot with the local Tigrés. But definitely worth the stop for a bite and a swim if you have the time. Bring some change for the toilet. Always ask to see the fresh catch before ordering and make sure to poke for freshness and examine the eyes! Avoid apex reef fish, of course.

I love this beach for many reasons. It's a big beach, so you can find your own secluded spot where you'd like. I prefer the powerful waves that come in, sometimes too power, and at certain swells surfing is possible. The river and the pools that run through the middle of beach is a nice bonus.

Playa San Rafael is a beautiful beach. Please ignore the people who complain about the beach being filled with locals. It's their country. What did they expect? Did they expect it to be cleared out just for Europeans or Americans? Go and Enjoy and share with the locals. There is much to learn from them.

This beach is nice, if you like pebbles and noisy uneducated people from all over the island. There are way too many beautiful white sand beaches in Dominican Republic. So, enjoy the view and continue on to Bahia de Las Aguilas.
