We are a group of 4 currently stranded at the Sosua bay hotel. The staff have not been paid in 2 month and the kitchen staff just walked out. Expedia is unwilling to give us credit back as the hotel won't pay them. The food, when there was some was awful and the drinks even worse.

I stayed at this resort 10 years ago when it first opened and I know how good it can be. It's a shame what it's become. DO NOT stay here until you have heard of a change in ownership!

We just returned from Dominican Republic. First I'd like to say that I am not a picky person. Pillows not good, hard bed, drinks not strong enough are not concerns to me. It's a third world country. Their 5 star is not nearly as fancy as an American 5 star. If you go there expecting "little America" you will not find it.
Having said that, stay away please from this Sosua Bay Beach Resort. They have many problems. We had to be transferred out to a different resort because of it. This property is in receivership, and is not paying their employees regularly, which makes you understand most of their attitudes. There are a few bartenders, and servers in the restaraunt that rise above it all and give great service, with huge smiles. More than I might be able to do if I were showing up each day working and not being paid.
My biggest concerns were with sanitation and health issues. If you don't know already, you can't go out of the country and expect the sanitation or preparation of food to be as sanitary as it is here in the U.S. This is why you are careful what you eat and smother everything in lime juice to kill alot of bacteria. However, when they rinse out a glass under water, without washing it, and then serve a drink to someone else in that same unclean glass, and are blatant about it it makes you wonder what you don't see. When your electricity is out for 6 to 9 hours a day, can't shower, flush toilets, and food is not refrigerated you have to wonder about such things as cholera, and hep A & B. Fairly serious health concerns. Be prepared when you travel. See the CDC in your area, have antibiotics "just in case." This resort was small and cozy. Easy to meet people and make new friends, and even though it lacked shows as promised, and the companion resort, easily acquiring towels for your room, same foods alot on the buffet, I would have enjoyed it if they were more concerned about cleanliness and the well being of their customers. Also, there is no security on this property to speak of....not good! And this is not a family oriented spot. Prostitution is a huge survival tactic for many of it's residents.
I almost feel bad writing this review. This is a very poor area of the Dominican Republic. These people are hungry and do what they have to do just to survive. I would hate to make one of these people lose their livelihood, however, I also can't stand not saying anything and knowing others will book a trip to this place and have all the problems we had on our vacation. We did the best we could with what we had, and we salvaged our time there and enjoyed many things. If you go somewhere else in this vicinity, let me say Casa Marina Ahmsa was very nice, and they tried hard to keep things clean and sanitary. Also, if in this area don't miss out on the 27 waterfall excursion. BEST excusion EVER, and we've done may in other countries. Hope this is helpful. If you choose this resort anyway, and go with low expectations, and lots of antibiotics I hope you enjoy it!

Room Tip: IF you go here the Victorian House is the only place to stay!

I was in the resort with my husband from 02/20-02/24 and it was a good stay. The view is beautiful, The workers are very nice and make you feel very welcomed . Yes the rooms need a little more maintenance but nonetheless were always clean. I didn't find any roaches like ppl say in the food. I ate there everyday and the seasoning of the food was great. There is different activities at night. Housekeeping went into the room every day to make sure you had your basic supplies and your room was cleaned up. Yes, they had old tvs but if your on vacation who cares about the tv, The help hasn't been paid but they made my stay very happy. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and would definitely go again and this time with my children.

I should have taken the bad reviews seriously. We are here for 14 days. It's been 7 days now and I want out of here. The cockroaches in the food area are disgusting. Thank god we are close to town - that's where we eat now. The bad stuff far outweighs the good. This place is 2 star at the very best.

We stayed at this 'resort' Feb 17-20. This place is cheap enough for the locals, so I guess it must be good value for money. But if you can afford more, find a better place. First the few positives here:
- Property is nicely laid out on a hillside, the bay & the view are beautiful
- The Omelet station & Barista are good, prepared with care
- Staff in the Dining area & Bar were nice

That's about it. Expect a big crowd of local people Friday through Sunday, and with it lots of shortages. Everything leaves a bad taste in the mouth, literally! Meals have very poor selection & the two a-la-carte restaurants (Mexican/Italian on alternate nights) are terrible, they don't even match your average US restaurant chain. Coffee cups are in short supply every morning. Worst of all, if you miss a meal, all you have is a grill downstairs that serves hot dogs, burgers & fries. On one of the days, they even ran out of burgers! There is nothing else to eat, not even bar nuts. Drinks at the bar are made with the cheapest alcohol (tip: order the simplest cocktails using just natural juices, all the flavored drinks taste horrible). Just one local brand of beer & it is NOT even the #1 DR beer.

Overall, the property is very old & could do with a lot of repair. On our first day, there were no light bulbs in our room. Rooms are in sorry state, plumbing could use major improvements. Bath towels are in perpetual short supply (they take away your towels every morning & you have to wait until late evening to get replacements). Rooms had no hand towels & toiletries are not replenished. Prepare to be aggressive with Reception for anything you need -- that seems to be the only way to get it. The WiFi works only in a small terrace area near the reception. There were no daily activities & the one Latina night-show was mediocre.

An all-inclusive at less than $35 per person -- I guess you shouldn't ask for more. But you couldn't stay for more than 2-3 days anyway because you'll get tired of it. Your only solace here is the main town is just outside, a 5-minute walk away. So if you have never been to an all-inclusive before & have a low budget, this place could be a choice ...?

Room Tip: There are lots of steps everywhere & no elevators, so ask for a room on the lowest level..

Second time I have stayed in this hotel. The food remains very good. Location is the best since its right on the water and you cant beat that. Very close to everything you don't need a rental car since all areas are within walking distance. I have a few recommendations to the owners and I will do privately. However, this is the best value in Puerto Plata.

Room Tip: Stay in the family area if you travel with your family. If you are a single male stay in building 5...
