When the large steel gates are closed upon you it gives you a slightly ominous feeling...

It is called a Reserve for a good reason. You and your wallet are closely guarded. This means that security is good but if you want to stroll out to other restaurants and massage places it does require an effort.

The grounds are truly beautiful and the service level great (with a butler concept). It is a big place so they offer to take you everywhere with golf carts. The rooms are huge. We stayed in an Ocean Pavilion which had a bathroom larger than my first apartment.

The architecture is a bit strange. To me it felt more Indian than Thai.

We did not go to the spa. The traditional Thai massage there was 10 times more expensive than on the beach north of the hotel where you can listen to the sound of the ocean as you have your treatment (I am sure the spa is fantastic - but 10 times better...).

Breakfast was good but the dinner dining options did not meet the standard of the hotel. After being disappointed once we then escaped every evening to other options.

We booked a package on their website called Stay 3 nights and pay for 2.

Would I go back? Maybe if the dining options improved.

Room Tip: If you stay in an Ocean Pavilion make sure you actually go upstairs to you own personal terrace. Bec...

WOW!Adorable views and landscapes makes this hotel a palace.Very friendly staff.Giant
swimming pool, spa, gym are things that give you sweet moments visiting this hotel. You
don't even need to walk! Small cars can take you anywhere you want! But beach is the main
problem of this hotel.
I'll recomend this hotel to my friends.

We spent 6 day here and had a wonderful time. Joy our butler went above and beyond! Happy hour during the afternoon at the pool was great! Food was wonderful! We wanted some local oysters and they provided for us! Do take the cooking class as they take you to the local market to shop, the teach you how to cook in their kitchen!! What a great resort! The pool overlooking the ocean is spectacular! Take a boat to the island and spend the day at the beach as the beach at the resort is not the best to swim in. The room was very nice....but the bed, wow the bed. HUGE!!!! It was like 2 king beds pushed together but it was one mattress! The details at the resort were spot on! My friend and i both got a bit sick after eating in the town... but the staff came to the rescue and brought us food to make us feel better. Thank you to the staff! Could not have asked for a nicer trip!

First time staying at the Ritz Carlton Phulay Bay was during our wedding venue scouting trip 8 months before our wedding. I remember my wife being speechless and completely astonished by the architecture, scenery and how nice the villas were. The first impression the grand entrance left, was only the start. When we arrived at our villa, my wife fell in love with the spacious bed, the lavish tubs (inside & outdoor) for romantic baths and the two walking closets. And the private pool infront of the villa was exactly what we needed after the flight. We then checked out the rest of the resort, which entailed sipping cocktails at the beach bar during sunset and having a private tasting dinner infront overlooking the beach. Having left a mesmerising impression - needless to say, it was an easy choice selecting the Ritz as our wedding venue.

Over the following months we were in constant contact with the various managers trashing out the minute details a wedding demands. One of the problems we had was choosing from the many options, which were on offer. It seemed everything was possible. (ofcourse at a price) We wanted lanterns to be lit on the beach - done. We wanted a fire dance show - done. We wanted a baby elephant onsite - done. We wanted to have our afterparty at a villa with a serviced bar - done.

During the wedding every Villa was assigned a "butler" and apart from their amazing buggy driving skills, they could not have been more attentive, helpful and accommodating. There was so much going on during our wedding that they started reading our minds in terms of what we needed. They really took off alot of the stress from our shoulders. There were occasions where I would call our butler and ask her to pick up flowers, leave a message with my parents and check if my brother had arrived and the response I would get was "flowers are already with my wife, brother arrived 30min ago and am heading to your parents now".

Being of Chinese origin, food at a wedding is considered one of - if not the most important aspect of a wedding. Our chef understood and we were able to design the evening course with recommendations from our chef. It did not disappoint my mom's very high expectations.

Ofcourse we had minor hickups during the wedding. Which wedding doesn't? The impressive thing was that management was constantly nearby to address the issue. It didn't matter if it was the last min change of the cocktails or spending up the courses sothat we could get out onto the beach to light the lanterns before the winds change.

In summary, it was nothing less than an unforgettable magical wedding. Not only was the property one of a kind in the world, it was complimented with a very attentive management, first class personal butler service and food served of the highest quality.

This is an amazing property! We were in a Royal Beach Villa, and it was amazing! The property is large, but you rarely see other people. We went with our 4 year old son and he had a blast. The food is good, our butler took care of all our needs, and the private beach is breath-taking. Make sure to get some bread from breakfast to take to feed the fish. Our butler, David, seemed to predict our every need, and was always ready and available to help us. It's pricey, that's for sure, but worth it for a special occasion.

We have stayed here twice in the last six months and, while it is not perfect, we are big fans for the reasons below and will go again (note also the downsides relating to food & beverages). I would mostly recommend it for a private retreat or romantic getaway of a few days rather than a long holiday.

- exclusive retreat: the villas are as spacious and comfortable as homes (for urbanites like me at least) and there is so much personal space around the resort that it can feel like your own personal playground. And they understand the amount of intrusion you need: sometimes luxury is privacy. The staff are very eager to help and remembered our drink preferences for the minibar and breakfast faves from the previous visit but also left us alone when we wanted that.

- what's included: I can't put a price on the comfort I feel when every little thing I do is *not* counted and added to the bill. The boat excursions to Hong island, the airport pick up, the internet, the goodies in the room, the cooler of beverages and snacks at the pool, the kayaks, the little courtesies. More and more high end properties have abandoned this approach and moved to a la carte pricing for everything, which I dislike intensely.

- excellent facilities such as one of the best equipped and well maintained gyms I have seen in a resort. Keeping up with my training is critically important to me and here the gym is excellent.

- and, yes, breakfast! I don't understand the criticisms of other reviewers. This is definitely not a mass-market resort like a Hilton or Marriott with extensive stands of waffle-bakers and five kinds of sausages etc. It is selected, quite virtuous and all of extremely high quality. I like, in particular, the selection of fresh juices (carrot, beet, lemongrass), the homemade granolas and baked goods, and healthful stir-fried vegetables.

The negative points were the following:
The splendid isolation comes at a cost, which is that you are at the mercy of the in-house restaurants. As some have noted, they are very pricey and, more importantly, the food can be really disappointing. At the Thai restaurant in particular, we dined there four times and each time asked for proper Thai spicing (being accustomed to real Thai food) and they simply would not deliver. The F&B manager even got very defensive about it. The seafood restaurant served up incredibly fussy European-style dishes obviously trying to impress but some simply grilled local fresh fish would have impressed us more. Local dining options are, unfortunately, very limited unless you are prepared for a relatively long and expensive taxi ride.

Room Tip: Reserve pool villas have a charcoal grey tiled private lap pool in the garden that is not only refre...
